howdy doody, my dad recently bought FFXI and everything has gone perfectly until the point of actually running the game. It seems the menus are extremely bright to the point where you really can't read the text at all, normal game chat text is fine, it's only the menus that seem to be having an issue, if anyone could give me some tips I would be grateful.

Well then o_o; no worries for that part im sure, it could be a problem with the data or just some simple configs that need to happen.

The default menu is really bright. Open the ingame menu, press "-" again to go to the second menu page. (Or left or right arrow key.) Go down to "Config" and select "Windows". Then at the bottom of that window there's 8 little buttons. Pick whichever one you like.

I personally prefer #6, it's nice and dark and not transparent, makes the words easy to read.

Edit: Er. Unless I'm misreading your problem somehow. If you're saying the chatlog is fine, but the menu itself is really bright, then I don't really know what to do. Maybe going down to the dat file section of the forums and getting somebody to tell you how to swap the models on the menu/chatlog.

unfortunately I already tried that, and although it did help a little, it was still so bright that you couldn't really see the actual text, thank you though

This happened with me, but I am playing through an HDTV. What I did to fix it was manually adjust the R G and B color levels on the TV and also the brightness on my TV.

I'm sure you could probably do the same thing on your Dad's monitor. Hope this helps.

Yeah ok ^ this is ridiculous rofl but here I'll paste without the COM part of it lol

Since I posted this I've spoken to a GM person in the webchat on playonline, according to him there are problems with the 8800 series geforce cards that can cause similar problems. Whether or not that is 100% accurate I dunno, as for the solutions you gave, the ingame color stuff doesn't really help cause it just ends up turning the screen green or some such. Brightness on the monitor however, I'm sure if he's tried, so I can't say for sure if we tried that yet. Thanks a bunch for your response though :)

Update your drivers, the 8800 problems were fixed like a month ago.

well as far as I know, as of two weeks ago the latest drivers were already installed

As far as I know, and long as you keep all the R G and B values the same as each other you shouldn't get a green hue, but then again, what do I know anywayz? hehe.

oh, and just to make sure, you are changing the RGB value on your dad's actual monitor, and not the in-game fonts, right?

ok, since i cant post urls since I havent "contributed" enough yet, here's the short version of the paragraph i just wrote:

Download the latest guru3d (go to their site) drivers for the 8800 series, I believe it is 100.12 or something similar, for 32bit windows xp. Extract, run the setup file, restart, and it will work. I just went through this. Latest nvidia drivers do not help : )
