View Full Version : 2 Quest Questions Please.

My first question is 0n the chocobo raising quest.
I've been told by the choco guy at the stables (I'm raising mine in Sandy, my starting city) that my choco is injured, so he asks me to give it some gausebit grass.
That was like, 1 day ago I think. So I traded the grass to help for recovery.
Anyway, I'm just wondering how many clumps of this grass I should give.
I just gave 1, though I'm not really sure if that should be enough or not.
Does it take a few days for the choco to recover? How many exactly?
Would one clump be enough to wait for it, or do you need to give a few?
My second question regards "The Road to Aht Urhgan" (http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/quests.html?realm=Jeuno&fquest=710) quest I've been doing.
I'm doing the beginners list.
I started with the 2 items from Valkurm Dunes a while back - the crab apron and damselfly worm. The damselfly worm came almost straight away for me, but for some reason, it took nearly a painstaking 3-4 hours to get the crab apron.
I can't understand why it took so long for the drop. :worry:
Just today, I got the next 2 items from Bubu Penin. (for short. you know what I mean) - The rarab tail and the dhalmel saliva.
Didn't take long for those to drop for me. So I'm feeling good about that. Yayy!
Now I have 4.
Okay, as for the bloody robe from the bogy drop.
I asked around on killingifrit a while ago, and someone said that if I wanted to solo it, then it would be a good idea if I waited until lvl 40. That felt like the best answer I got from there, so I'm either going to wait until I get lvl 40, or else I might see if anyone could get it for me.
I'm assuming I can still solo the ghoul right now, to get the magicked skull.
So here's my question.
Do ghouls only come out at night like the bogy's do?
I thought that since I'm in Bubu Penin right now, I might aswell try and get it from there, but I'm just wondering if they tend to pop in a certain area.
They don't seem as regular as all the other creatures you see during the day, which kinda makes them difficult to spot. *sigh!*
Does anyone have any ideas which part of Bubu Penin I could start seacrhing for them please? Which part of the area are they most likely to roam?

1 Grasss should do it. You need to wait 1 real day for it to fully take effect. If it's still injuried after a full real 24 hours then hand it another but I only ever handed one over.
Ghouls only appear at night like Bogy's and appear in several different places through out Valkurm Dunes so it's hard to give you a location to look in to definitly find one.
Bogy's in the Bur Penn can be found on the beachs to the north east and the south. A couple spawn on each side. Try taking a thief friend with you to help increase drop rates with thier Treasure Hunter skill or if your thf is above lvl15 then sub it.
If you were on Midgarsormer then I would offer to help but as your not I can't :/

If you can find someone to help you, it's easier to get a skull drop in the Gusgen Mines. It would be difficult for you to go alone, but you could get someone else to help out it's much easier to get that drop in there.

True though there are more Ghouls there I've found the drop rate in Gusgen Mines alot worse then the dunes but then again Ghouls are rarer in the dunes so in a way it evens it out. I just find the Dunes drop rate better and I'm a thief <.<; but that's just me I'm sure other thief's have thier own experiences.

Bogys are night mobs like ghouls. They appear on the shorline in Buburimu. You're best off checking the beaches near the entrance to Bibiki Bay. There's a certain spawn up on the cliff of the very northwest corner of F10. The Mighoya and Khoonta Dunes have them anyhow.
If you want to kill them in Valkurm, they appear just inland of the beaches. There's only a couple there, though.
The ghouls... I've never had any kind of luck with them at all. Valkurm or Gusgen.
As a 34 whm, these should be relatively easy mobs, but bring echo drops!
Happy hunting.

You could head into Gusgen Mines. They're higher level than the ones on the beaches (up to 24 for the ghouls and 27 for the bogies), but they're out day-round, and from what I've seen, have a better drop rate.
If you do go here, do bring a friend.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by - "got maimed by one"
but I have a good feeling that your friend's char got killed by one though.
So if you don't think lvl 40 would be a good lvl to fight bogy's, then what do you reccomend? Lvl 50 or 60 perhaps?
Surely not even 70!
I hope to get some help on them waaaaaayyyy before that though!

In Buburimu, there's "The Maze Of Shakrahmi" which no one has mentioned, and apprently, according to the ffxi atlas site, there are ghouls in there which drop the magicked skull too.
Could I perhaps look in there? I'm just wondering why no one has thought to mention it, and since I last logged out of the game at the enterance to Buburimu, it would be so convenient since the maze is rather close too!
What do people think about this?

WHM at 40 should be plenty to take on those bogy's. While WHM doesn't have much in the way of offensive spells for most mobs, against the undead Banish spells and Cure spells should do quite well. Especially the Cure spells as that is probably your higher skill.
Remember Cure deals damage to undead mobs. You also have Stoneskin, Blink and Aquaveil, don't forget to use them.
And silence, remember to keep them silenced.

Hmm.... according to http://ffxi.somepage.com/itemdb/2927
Echo Drops are a remedy for silence. If you are silenced, does that mean you cannot cast any spells at that time, so use Echo Drops to remedy that?
Also, how long does the inflicted silence treatment last for please?

Yes, if you're Silenced you can't cast any spells, so Echo Drops would remedy that status.
The duration varies.

Silence does prevent you from casting any magic. Echo drops will remove the effect as wiki said.
The duration of silence can vary. It may have something to do with level difference between you and the mob and perhaps checks MND vs MND or INT vs INT. So there isn't a set time that it last.
The bogys can be quite bothersome because the cast magic, don't take much physical damage from blunt damage (clubs, staves) and can hit for quite a bit. o becareful. 40 should be plently high enough to kill them, just remember your enfeebles. Silence, Paralyze, Dia, Slow, Blind will help you kill them. The Ghouls are not as bad since you get a blunt damage bonus on those.
I prefer Gusgen Mines for the drop. They may have a lower drop rate, but they are always up and not just at night. Whenever I help someone I always go there, and it rarly takes me more than 15 minutes to get both drops. Good luck.

Bogys also like to use an ability that curses you, so make sure you've got Cursna (or Holy Water) available because Curse really sucks.

to answer your questions. the last items you need, the bloody robe is dropped by bogys in valkurm dunes as well as buburima. they are plentiful on the beaches. can you solo those? well you should be able to but i couldnt guarantee it. it seems like i probaly have at lower level whm but not 100% positive.
now as far as the magicked skull and ghouls. they are found in valkurm dunes in most areas. the drop rate is fairly high, but to actually find them to kill you need a ranger and widescan. they only are seen from 20:00 to 4:00. they can be found in great numbers in gusgen mines, but drop rate is low. i have seen skulls drop after 1 kill and take up to an hour or longer. due to sheer number gusgen is your best bet. just watch your hp closely if it falls to low you will blood agro other ghouls and the wolf type mobs there as well.

Ya know, I HAD actually wondered for a while, about using cure spells on the undead. I play another levelling game where amongst a whole lot of other monsters, there are also the undead too, (Neverwinter Nights. Single + Multiplayer too. Anyone ever here played or heard of it?) and just like in FFXl, you can use heal/cure spells to lower their hp.
I had wondered if this option for NWN was the same in FFXl too, and it's a question I was going to ask about at some point , but you took the words right out of my mouth, and it looks like you have just answered that question for me, so thanks for that.

Okay, so I'm either going to try Gusgen, or Valkurm at best.
Regarding the times for them to show in Valkurm, I read about that on alla.
Someone said that they show somewhere between 20:00 to 4:00, (or in their words, 0-4) but something else which was posted by this person.......
it was also said that they (the ghouls) can spawn around J-8.
I can try looking around this area, but I'm not really sure if everyone hre can confirm this or not.
Regarding Widescan.
I had assumed it was posibly an ability or trait used only by RNG, cause I looked through my FFXl guide under RNG where it lists all hte Job's abilities and traits to see if Widescan was listed, but I couldn't see it.
So I'm quite unsure what widescan is, and what it does.
Maybe it's a bit confusing for me.

Okay, 1 last thing for now. (sorry for all my ranting :P )
A couple of you have mentioned about using echo drops.
I've just realised that there is a lvl 19 whm spell called Silena - removes silence and mute from target. (aswell as the spell "Silence" at lvl 15) I probably already have both of these spells, so I could use Silena instead of echo drops, couldn't I?
Aksannyi

No, if you are silenced then you will not be able to cast Silena. It sucks, but it's a spell you can never use on yourself.

Yes, Silena is used when you're in a party and something casts silence on other party members. All party members should still be carrying Echo Drops, but especially the WHM, BRD, RDM and often BLM (whoever is casting Silena) need at least one stack of them.

Wide Scan is an ability available to Ranger and Beastmaster. It is always available and is subbable. From what I understand, the Ranger or Beastmaster job level affects scan radius, with Ranger having the larger radius at a given level, but I haven't seen full details on this...
As for Bogy, I soloed one in Buburimu with some difficulty, but I'm not sure now on what character at what level... I nearly got killed and had to CFH one in Valkurm at WHM39, but I was just raising and trying to protect someone and ended up being almost out of MP when the fight started, so it was almost pure melee (though I did 2-hour the first time my HP nearly ran out).
If properly equipped and buffed, WHM can be an effective solo job. You'll definitely want to pick up some melee-oriented gear and the best hammer you can get for your level (I'm still working on Alchemy so I can synth Koren a Holy Maul). Make sure your club skill is well-leveled.
As far as getting rare mobs like Ghouls in Valkurm, I wish more parties would pay attention to the benefits of Wide Scan; I had to argue with some otherwise decent dunes parties to let me pull when I was there as RNG main and as WAR/RNG. Maybe it's something about being tarutaru female, but through Qufim a lot of parties tended to ask others to pull when I was THF or RNG (in one case, the one asked to pull had to point out that they had no ranged weapons and no suitable pulling JA and that they should ask me to pull). I didn't start getting much real pulling experience as THF until post-30...
(In hindsight, maybe it's the combination of 'weak' race, 'weak' job, and the fact that I didn't sub NIN, which is somehow supposed to magically make me 'better' despite offering no useful traits or spells at that level...)

I was able to solo Bogy's on my 31RDM pretty well really. You just have to keep them silenced, apply all your enfeebs(I don't remember if Dia or Bio would do more damage) and just wait it out. It would have been easier had I had Dispel so I could get rid of Ice Spikes. If your not a healing class, just bring a few Hi-Potions or better yet, help lol. Even if it's another level 30 it'll make the fights go much quicker.

I realise that you cannot cast silena on yourself if you're under the influence of silence since you cannot cast any spells, so I guess you could only use it on other players who were silenced instead, as long as you aren't. (hence the use of echo drops)
I understand that now, but what about cursna? If you are cursed, you CAN cast spells, can't you? So you could cast cursna on yourself if you were cursed. I don't really understand why you can't.
Maybe someone could explain this to me.
Also, I managed to get the skull yesterday from Gusgen Mines. (I soloed it not far from the enterance) I'm just a bit confused about something though.
I attemped to use my cure spells on the ghouls, (they are undead, right?) but everytime I cast them, they were only directed on me and not them. Is there anything I've been doing wrong? :worry:
It should work, shouldn't it?
Murphie

You can cast Cursna on yourself if you're cursed. I don't know why you would have gotten the idea that you can't.
You probably targeted your macros wrong when you tried to cast cure spells on the ghouls.

I read a post above and assumed I couldn't use it on myself. I was seemingly misguided

I don't use macros, and never have. I found them too complicated. I may have targeted myself in the process, though i'm not sure. I'll just try again next time I'm logged in.

lol..
well i was really lucky and completely avoided this route, as instead of the six items, he also accepts certain coffer keys. i had randomly come into possession of the quicksands coffer key and had hoarded it away in my mog house with the rest of my crap.
so i just traded that and got on the boat.
if you're having serious trouble with this, that may be something you can look at. i think if you speak to the guy that gives you the quest he gives you different options (ie the key) so you can always check to see which ones he will accept, and grab a few friends and go farm one.
goodluck~
