Hey all I am starting a theif and am brand new to this game but not mmo's. Should I start a thief or another class and the level a thief to make it easier? And are thiefs fun. I always play a rogue/thief class in mmo's and want to know what its like in this game and how I should start off. Thanks...

I've been leveling THF of late, it's fun, though it's a bit different from other MMOs.

You don't get a stealth ability right away, or even remotely at the beginning. Level 45, you get http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Hide. Which is invisibility, but you can still get aggro from sound & smell aggressive monsters.

Thieves are a good damage class, but their real focus after level 30 (or 33, depending who you ask) is hate control. At level 30 they get Trick Attack (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Trick_Attack), which is used to fool the monster you're fighting into thinking the person standing IN FRONT of you did the attack. When you & said person are standing behind the monster, you can use Sneak Attack (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Sneak_Attack), in addition to Trick Attack, to do some pretty nice damage, which pins that much MORE hate onto your tank. The reason I say 33 is because at 33 (100 Dagger skill), Thieves get the powerful Dagger weapon skill "Viper Bite".

As far as starting off...honestly, I would start off as Monk or Warrior (Leveling both to 18+ wouldn't hurt. I prefer Monk to sub to Thief, but you'll need Warrior later for Ninja.). Both are perfectly acceptable subjobs (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Subjob) for Thief until 30ish, after which you can unlock Ninja. THF/NIN is pretty much the default combo, for the ability to Dual Wield, and Utsusemi (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Utsusemi, it's a Ninjutsu spell that absorbs a given number of attacks).

The leveling track would look something like
MONK or WARRIOR -> 18 (Unlock subjob ability)
THIEF/MONK or THIEF/WARRIOR -> 30 (Unlock NINJA)
WARRIOR/MNK -> 18 (if you didn't level Warrior earlier. 18 because it's half of your needed Ninja level of 37.)
NINJA/WARRIOR -> 37 (Maximum level is 75, subjobs are capped at half of your level, therefore 37 is maximum subjob level)
THIEF/NINJA 30 -> 75
Or something like that.

Hope this doesn't confuse you too much! I've really enjoyed THF, the little bit I've leveled it.

Start as White Mage instead; easier to get in exp parties, and sooner or later you'll find spells like Sneak and Invisible mighty useful. (Thrifty, too.)

Actually, get every standard job to Lv.10, and sell the drops for money, so you can decently equip yourself for which ever job you'd like to take beyond level 10. You can get a taste of what each job is like, too, as a bonus.

I plan on THF eventually being my Main Job. Here is the path I am currently working on:

Monk to 18 >> Get Sub Job Quest done
Warrior/Monk to 37 >> Get Ninja Quest done
Ninja/Warrior to 37
Thief/Warrior to 19
Thief/Ninja from 20 to 33
Thief/Warrior OR Thief/Ninja from 34 to 37.

Both Ninja and Warrior are good Sub Jobs for Thief, and each has its situational use. I would recommend having them both.
