View Full Version : Did S/E mess up?

I've been wondering this for some time. Since the update when they gave BLU some lower level throwing weapon use. But they forgot to give them a skill in it. They however gave PUP a throwing skill of C+ but no logical throwing items (till the lvl70 all jobs ones and beside ammo that no one ever intentially throws) I don't understand why they would put a job on the list to use of an item, yet don't give them a skill in it.
sorry if this was ever brought up before

RDM can use staves but have no staff skill.

Yes, I know that- but why 'give' the job the ability to use something that they will always be gimped at using? That's all I was asking. Look at PUP in my example .. they can't throw anything (that people would want to throw besides the lvl70 all job Chakrams) Yet even WHM has an E skill rating and can throw pebbles.. lol

Do they need to throw anything though? I mean, is it really going to help them any?

Because sometimes you equip something because of stat increases, not because you want to use it.
Again, see RDM equipping Elemental Staves.
Everything can throw something.
SE probably realized how useless throwing was and decided not to give it to BLU.

Most of those things are for the +stats, but who knows.
There's also the Junior Musketeer's Tuck (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Junior_Musketeer%27s_Tuck) which Black Mage can equip, but BLMs don't have any sword skill. This one has no stat bonuses, but who knows, maybe SE put it in so that a BLM can sub Thief (which has sword skill) and farm lowbie mobs with a sword for kicks. I've considered it myself. I even think there is a crossbow or bow for BLM.
I wouldn't worry about throwing on BLU. Like Feba mentioned, throwing is pretty useless. Only job that can benefit from throwing is Ninja, but the shurikens aren't cheap. Good Ninjas use the elemental wheel to keep hate. Dedicated Ninjas throw shurikens too.
For pulling purposes, bows and crossbows will mostly be used. Jobs that can't use them are usually casters, so they'll use spells like Dia or Paralyze to pull. Monks hardly ever pull, but they tend to use Chi Blast for those rare occasions. Bards play off key to pull.

I threw my Phantom Tathlum at Sewer Syrup - does that count?
I'm petriefied of throwing my HH Bomb...
BLM sword is only good for walking around and making people go "What the hell, a BLM with a sword?"
Kinda like a DRG in a robe.

While I agree, with the stat bonus. But why give a job (PUP) that has nothing to throw a skill in it. (can't count "all jobs" as something)

Um, why not? You say they have nothing to throw except those that they can (All jobs).

S#&ts and giggles? Boredom? Future expansion? Only SE knows for sure.

I (BST) can equip as many, if not more, hand-to-hand weapons as a PUP can, but I don't have any H2H skill. I wanna hit stuff (effectively) with my fists >D.

Um, why not? You say they have nothing to throw except those that they can (All jobs). Not exactly fun to skill at 70 with a 0 skill.
Just don't understand the concept (but then again this is S/E we are talking about).

Not exactly fun to skill at 70 with a 0 skill.
So skill it up like everyone else.
And PUP gets throwing items before 70 anyway, so if you still have 0 skill at 70 you don't really care about your throwing skill.
Edit: This is the BLU forum, how did this get t be about PUP's that don't want to skill up a little used skill?

Because the original post was about BLUs getting throwing weapons when they don't have throwing skill, and the opposite with PUP. The BLU question was easily dismissed.

So skill it up like everyone else.
And PUP gets throwing items before 70 anyway, I don't know about you, but here are the only throwing (ammo) that PUP can use pre70:
Fortune Egg
Happy Egg
Orphic Egg
Morion Tathlum
Attar Sachet
Balm Sachet
Civet Sachet
Millefleurs Sachet
Musk Sachet
Olibanum Sachet
Sweet Sachet
Imperial Dart
Mercenary's Dart
Nazar Bonjuk
Optical Needle
Volunteer's Dart
Tiphia Sting
Bibiki Seashell
Phantom Tathlum
Personally.. not a single one I would want to intentionally throw. So if you happened to start out, or never touched throwing before and mained PUP.. you would have 0 (or close to it) at the time you could obtain the throwing-returnable Chakrams at lvl70.

SMN has knife skills.
I've been thinking if I should skill up knife. You know dual wield + Kraken Club + Knife for Energy Steal... I dunno... do we even get energy steal? *sigh*

SMN can use Energy Steal according to Wiki

Why wouldn't you use the darts? AFAIK they are reusable items.
darts do not return... the beseiged ones might, but I doubt it.

Pup can't equip ranged weapons anyways, they're required to put a controller in the weapon slot for their automatons, and the only thing you can equip with the controller is the oil.
So now it's double-pointless.

I tried killing an Orc melee with an axe on BLM once. It was increadably slow. In the end I got bored, slept it and left.

RDM can use staves but have no staff skill.
We also get H2H lucky us, H2H is really useless but the elemental staffs are useful

All I can say here is probably just for the sake of logic. FFXI applies more logical structures then any other MMO I've seen. Just look at EQ when you get silenced your weapons can't proc a spell, you can't drink any potions, he'll a Warrior can't use his skills and those are not even spells. Just the way the system is built it thinks they are and treats them that way. The EQ developers don't even try to fix this obvious illogical structure, I mean how is you being able to speak suppose to effect an enchanted weapon and stop it from doing it's own spell. How the hell is not speaking translate to not being able to drink? Then also last I remember you don't need your voice to perform a special techniqe with a weapon.
So for the sake of logic with the background they've given PUP it makes sense that they'd be able to use and have some skill in using items that are all job, likely more will be implimented to further expand on that logic. For any mage job though it just makes sense that they'd be able to equip items that have stats on them and can be considered light and are a charm, enchanted, or magical in some way.
Not neccisarily that they are skilled at hitting the broad side of a barn with what they throw, if they happen to throw it.

Then also last I remember you don't need your voice to perform a special techniqe with a weapon. Maybe it "stitches" your mouth shut, therefor unable to drink... and maybe there is some sort of "enchantment" you say to perform your special technique with a weapon (Street Fighter for example, among others)
But ya for the most part you fair to be correct. S/E's attempt at player/game balance.

Well the Kiai/Kihap/Yatz or whatever you like to call it (What Street Figher uses) is not neccisary for you to vocally express. As long as you can exhale to tighten the stomach, the most fluent and powerful strikes are all about form and beathing.
Hell in some training places they express explicitly that the Kiai should only have a sound if you are attempting to physcology mess with your opponent. Otherwise to perform the move sound isn't needed. Just to point when I stated a special technique with a Warrior I ment stuff like multiple attacks, a stunning strike, and even something that more related to evading (like Third Eye).
Stitching the mouth shut though isn't exactly silencing them, but you can go about trying to cover the programming flaw by using that logic.
