What city did you start out in?

There will be several low-level monsters just outside the city that you can kill for certain drops, then sell them in stacks at auction. Some stacks have more value than others, so make sure to pay attention to the sales history. I can tell you that if you're in Windurst, the crawlers drop silk threads which go for about 12,000 gil a stack.. or at least that's been the price on Unicorn. Also, there are a number of trade guilds you can join to learn certain trades like cooking, fishing, etc. Fishing is pretty inexpensive once you get into it. Only problem is that it can be somewhat boring at times.

Just a couple suggestions, anyways. ^^

If you want to make money at your levl, make sure you have signet and stack crystals(1-3k a stack on Lakshami), or beehive chips(2-4k a stack). Don't worry about crafting until you get to lvl 15ish(when you can farm the items needed)

In San D' Oria, head out to Ronfaure and Rabbits(Rabbit Hides), Sheep(Sheepskins) and Bats(Bat Wings). Make sure you have signet on. Sell these and the crystals by the stack(every 12) and then look on your map to find weapon and armor NPC stores. DO NOT BUY YOUR WEAPONS AND ARMOR FROM THE AUCTION HOUSE IF YOU CAN HELP IT! Untill level 16+, NPCs offer almost everything cheaper. What job are you? If you picked Monk, Black Mage or White Mage, you'll have a tough time finding armor and may have to resort to the auction house. If you picked otherwise, you can buy leather armor for cheap as well as a good weapon(Axe or Great Axe if your a Warrior, Sword for Red Mage and Thief)

Also, there are a few npc characters around Sandy that will offer a reward if you bring them certain things. So talk to some of them. I know of one, but can't quite remember exactly as I've mainly been playing in Windurst.

Enter the item, it tells you what AH category it is under.

Sell your crystals in stacks of 12 for right now, to make yourself some cash. Whatever you have extra, you can either hang on to, or turn in to the gate guard who casts signet to raise your rank. If you hang on to the crystals, you can look into different types of crafting and then use what you have to start skilling up, depending on the craft.

Good Luck!

Keep your party flag up and just solo around Ronfaure or the La Theine Plateau. Eventually, if you're lucky, someone will send you a /tell inviting you to join their party. Chances are the party will be in the dunes (Valkurm Dunes). Since you started in San d'Oria you will have a map of the La Theine Plateau so use that to find your way to the dunes. Just watch out for goblins, orcs, rams, and other mobs that will aggro you on your way.
