I am a lvl 34 BLU with "Undead killer" active. I am trying to learn the spell "Terror Touch" off of the Banshies on Qufim. Even though they are Easy prey I am not able to beat them. I am getting around 70 damage with Bludgeon and not really any other damage with the other spells. My meele damage is usually 5-10 per hit so I feel like that may be the problem but "Dia" doesn't seem to help(I sub RDM). My gear is:Fraiers(sp) tunic(for body), centurians sword, brass armor for legs and feet, and lvl 27 gloves that give +4 attack. I usually use pies to keep my MP cap higher but I find myself running out of MP(even with refresh drinks).

My question is :1) what spells other than Bludgeon will work against Banshiees(Smite or rage gives about 40-50 damage but not consistantly)
2) Should I look to upgrade my gear and if so to what?(the only thing I dont want to upgrade is my sword-which i'm waiting for lvl 40 for the AF sword)
3) should I be using any other food than pies.

The problem with my spells isn't that they arn't activating rather they arn't doing good damage compaired to there cost, and compaired to everything else(except for elementals which I avoid for now)

Bludgeon should be doing decent damage since it's arcane, but you may want to try subbing WHM for Banish. Banish removes their weapon resistance temporarily.

Apart from that, level up a bit more and try again when they're too weak. You don't have to get EXP from a mob to learn a spell.

1) Head Butt? I find that an invaluable spell while soloing personally. As long as stun lasts awhile it can make a signifigant difference throughout the battle.

2) Poison? I know it isn't much damage but a few ticks or poison may help.

3) Ghosts in Valkurm Dunes? You can try learning the spell from there or Buburimmu Peninsula. Hell maybe even Gusgen Mines?

Ghosts are hard as it is for any job, so don't get discouraged.

Keep in mind Ghosts have a resistance to melee damage. So your Sword damage will be pretty dismal, and honestly Bludgeon should do pretty crappy damage as well. I would suggest getting an LS member to come along and tank for you. Anybody in the 50's could do it for you, even a WHM. lol I know what it's like to wanna be self sufficient, but you may find it's much easier to get some help on a lotta these spells.

I agree with tdh, I got Terror Touch around 41-42 off Ghost in Dunes, alot easier to tank them then. I used /WHM, but that 8 lvls makes a huge difference. Yeah it sux having to ask for help, but let's face it, we won't be getting Frenetic Rip @63 by ourselves lol, just an example. But don't be discouraged, keep at it and maybe enlist the help of a higher lvl friend =) Just wait...Refueling is just around the corner, now you wanna talk about a skill that sux to acquire >_> lol Just keep at it, you'll get it eventually, and it's not a skill someone's gonna kick you from PT for if you don't have it XD

Ghosts give a 25% damage penalty to slashing and piercing, and a whopping 50% damage penalty to blunt. Bludgeon is blunt damage, correct? You probably want to spend your MP on a different spell, in spite of that fact that Bludgeon is a 3-hit attack. Consequently, I would suggest stuff like Smite of Rage, Screwdiver, and Claw Cyclone.

Well, my first suggestion would be to try Gusgen Mines. The ghosts there are weaker and spawn all day. That should take some of the sting out of fighting them.

I'd say set piercing/slashing spells first (Screwdriver, Claw Cyclone, and the like) Head Butt,

You might want to try subbing WHM and using Wild Oats and Dia, too.

Of course, ask me, and I'd say Terror Touch isn't that great. Don't feel bad if you don't have it at 40. Hell, if you get to 40, it'd probably be a bit easier to learn.

Keep in mind that Banish temporarily removes all their melee resistances, as well.

I agree with the idea of going to the Dunes, Pennisula, and marshlands. Those are much lower level.

Yeah... just fight easier ghosts. Try the ones in Tahrongi Canyon if you don't mind waiting til night. Those are real weak. XD
