What kind of gear should I get?

I was playing as a WAR/BLM and somebody told me that I would'nt be of any help as a BLM and that I should be a Monk. So right now im 8 WAR/2 MNK.
What kind of gear should I get for my monk, right now all I have is Cesti's.
Also, what do Monks specialize in?

Monks specialize in the Martial Arts, as is seen in-game as an out and out Damage Dealer.

You don't really sub a mage class to a main melee class, so war/blm wouldn't work.

Basically, with MNK, you'll cause a lot of damage by using your Hand-To-Hand combat skill.

Any gear you could find with physical stats would be good. In the early levels, your armor might be used by SAM and NIN also, so if you're thinking of leveling those eventually, keep your MNK gear.

but best way to go is lvl monk to 15 then war to 30 unlock nin for war/nin seeing if your taking war to 75 that is the main sub people will want.

Barret is more of a Rng then a Cor. All ranged DD and no buffs
Cloud is a Sam just like Sephy
Yuffie is a nin/thf, she throws a shuriken and steals from people, not shoots stuff
You also forgot Caitsith a Pup/Cor and Vincent who's obviously a Rng/Drk

As for what the OP:

With Mnk you'll want Acc, Att, Str, Dex, Vit, Def on your gear in that order. Though there will be very little you can actually equip with those stats first. Higher Dmg on weapons is gerenally better to use when you first start out as some mobs can have high defense. You can also use an item called Meat Jerky, which is a low priced food sold in some NPC shops, to increase your Str and Att temporarily.

Monks are Damage Dealers, so their main purpose is to kill things. Getting equipment with the stats listed will help you do that better. Though Mnks will often need to get the attention of their opponents so the Def and Vit gear will find it's use.

Depending on what you want to actually play full time in this game, I suggest taking Mnk all the way to level 18. With mnk at 18 you can take War to 37 with little trouble and have it be ready to use as a subjob for every other melee and tank job in the game.

Before level 18, I would suggest for getting a White Belt at the waist slot, then upgrade to Purple Belt at level 18. Selection of decent monk's gear begins from level 14+. For weapon type, there are a few good Knuckles at your level range.

Well then, are you planning on being a Dark Knight? if so, you only need to get Mnk to 18, then war to 37 and can then take Dark Knight all the way to 75 ^^

If you liked doing magic, get a job to 30 then unlock pld, drk, and blu. Pld is a tank, Drk and Blu are both dds and all three can use magic as well as weapons. War is a good sub for all of them too.
