How good are Elvaan Black mages compared to Tarus?

IIRC, the trade off is that the Taru can do more damage with magic attacks and has more mana to cast magic with... but later on will die in a single hit to most monsters.

The Elvaan will do less damage with their magic, but if the battle turns really bad (warrior dies, taunt doesn't stick, etc etc), the Elvaan Black Mage has a chance to run away and survive, whereas a taru would be dead.

I'm not sure on the exact numbers, percentage wise, that Elvaan get in stats compared to Tarus. I can go look that up and I'll repost it in about 2 shakes. :)

Humes have all 20s in their stats, at level 50, with no job (which is impossible.)

At level 20, with no job, Elvaans have 26 STR, 17 DEX, 23 VIT, 14 AGI, 14 INT, 26 MND, and 20 CHR. Tarutarus have 14 str, 20 dex, 17 vit, 23 agi, 29 int (!!), 17 mnd, and 20 chr.


So Elvaans, with no job, get the following:

-15% Str
+15% Vit
-30% Agi
-30% Int
+30% Mnd

This makes them more suited for tanking and being a white mage.

Tarus, with no job, get the following:

-30% Str
-15% Vit
+15% Agi
+45% Int
-15% Mnd

That makes them VERY well suited for mages, but almost worthless for melee fighting.

It's interesting to note that, apparently, Mnd affects your ability to cast healing magic (white magic), so a Evlaan White Mage might be a bit better healer than a TaruTaru. :confused:

Black Mage, compared to no job (impossible again, so these numbers are probably really skewed), adds:

+70% Str
+115% Dex
+70% Vit
+115% Agi
+145% Int
+85% Mnd
+100% Cha

If you are going to be a black mage, there is no doubt that you should be a Taru. They are the best race for that job and Elvaans' are the second worst(Galkas being the worst). And Taru black mages do not die in one hit, it takes at least 3 or 4. And it really doesn't matter because as a black mage you should be subbing white mage, no question about it so then you can cure yourself and the rest of the party. As an Elvaan your mp and Intellegence(which determines the attack power and dammage of magic) is very low. Where as in a Taru are very high, so they will cause more damage than Elvaans. One more thing, if there is a party forming and they have a choice between a Elvaan or Taru Black mage, the Taru will be the first pick for these very reasons.

I didnt realise Elvaans would make such bad black mages. Im gona have seriously reconsider my main class and/or race. I didnt realise that Elvaans had such poor dex and agi. Hmmm Tarutarus are starting to look rather good right now...

Careful. You're falling into a min/max trap. Yes, Tarus can cast more spells for more damage, but Elvaans have their own unique style that makes them a good choice too.

That's why you still see like, Troll Shadowknights in EQ, for example.

Play the character you like, not the "best" character. You'll have more fun that way. :thumbsup:

Elvaan Blm's arent bad ... Get your RSE or AF, adn we can actually be compared to Tarus ... But if your are more into that whole little "midget who looks stupid when they run" or the "we are so superior and cooler than everyone else, badass" race .. .Well, its your pick ^^;;;;;;;;;

elvanns dont make good mages period...they make the best warriors but if i was playing final fantasy now i wouldnt even look at a elvann mage unless there are no more taru taru, hume or even mithra mages...

The thing is I really like Elvaans and I really prefer mage classes over tanks, but both race and class seem to be completely negating each other, unless Shadowheart is right of course. I really dont like Tarutarus but if thats what must be done to be an effective blm that can be an asset to a pt, i might just end up taking that route. The more i compare the stats the more I see how much better suited a Elvaan is for tank classes, but Im curious if there are any kind of items that can be purchased to even up stas suchs Int that could make me as good or near as good as a tarutaru blm.

Funny thing is, without any MP/HP boosting eqp, Elvaan HP, and Taru MP is almost the same, hence Elvaan MP is Taru HP ^^;

Well, Elvaan aren't that terrible as a mage actually they are not too bad, just that they can't compete with Tarutaru, Mithra, Hume that's all.

However, Elvaan sure has all the best animation of all the race though.

im in the EXACT same situation as you, batsu. I am going elvaan black mage (says summoner subbed, but thats not neccessarily true) too. Quite frankly (not to offend anyone hopefully), i hate taru tarus. I never liked playing the cute little race. and i really like elvaans. the impression that ive been getting from these boards is that the race isnt as important as equipment and job/sub job combos. so play whatever you like. im sure if i played as a taru just because they make the best black magi, i would not have ANY fun. if worst comes to worst, i may switch to hume, but thats just me. Just play however you want to play, and dont listen to the people who say elvaans cannot be black magi. there will be people out there who will accept you into a party regardless of race, but more of skill with your class, because thats what it really boils down to. like other people have said, if someone doesnt accept you into a party because of your race, they probably arent worth playing with anyway.

Right now, I actually have an Elvaan BLM. Its not too bad for soloing because Elvaans have the most STR. This means I can deal some damage with my staff. In the end, Elvaan BLMs don't compare to Tarutarus, but in the beginning they rock. Who makes a better BLM, Hume or Mithra?

Personally, I would go with Mithra. If it wasn't for them being all Female for PCs, I would be one.

I've been hearing alot that Elvaan make the best WHM. Could someone explain that a little bit further? (also would summoner make a good subjob for a WHM?)

Actually, I found out just after I posted, that both races have the exact same HP and MP when using BLM/WHM combo. The Hume has a little bit more INT though. Anyways, why do you care so much if Mithras are only female? Are you that insecure? When the NA version finally hits, I'm being a Mithra because they are one of the coolest races. Plus, they are a good all around character. Elvaans = boring. They show no emotion. If I hadn't played so much with my Elvaan, I would have deleted it for a Mithra.
