View Full Version : Difficulty of NPC Dragon fight?

I'm mainly asking how hard is this fight exactly? I'm mainly asking if its possible for a 30RDM(I can get to 33 prolly for Phalanx) and a 30BLM to do this fight? Once the NPC's come out I'm guessing the fight will be easy, but beforehand would a kiting method work on the DRG? I was gonna go /NIN for the fight so I figure with Gravity I could eventually whittle it down, with nukes here and there.
Just looking for info basically XD.

It's not a particularly difficult fight. I soloed it as a 40 WHM, to give you an idea of degree of difficulty.

I soloed it as a 40 BLM, and to tell you the truth I woulda killed it without my NPC... aftually her popping in to "save the day" messed me up and made teh fight take longer then it should have >.>
I did it as my BLM, and was practically naked. Seers gear and low level crap I had sitting around. As long as you can do damage you should be fine. Once my NPC came out, it was just a matter of time, although do be sure to keep your NPC healed.

I was winning it very happily, then I got petrified right when it was close to dying. My NPC finished it off, but even after the BC was over I was still petrified, and it didn't wear off for TEN MINUTES. So be sure to turn around if you see the dragon ready Petro Gaze ...

If you can solo the skeleton NM before this, I'd think you should be able to solo the dragon, they are roughly the same, with the dragon maybe being a little bit harder.
I did these as a lvl, 60 something dragoon, so I can't say for sure just how difficult these are though.
Have you considered the sleep/nuke method? Or would straight up fighting work best for this mob? Go rdm/nin, 2x dagger or swords, enspells + blaze spikes and go at him?
Or you could mix it up a little if you feel daring, go rdm/thf, when you have a bunch of TP sleep the dragon, run behind and get off a SA+WS for a ton of damage.

You can solo it, but not at lvl 30 or 33. It's a lvl 40 cap, so I highly suggested doing it at 40, or atleast 39. Your NPC will come in midway as a tank, so you'll be free to do your magic stuff.
Regarding your 30BLM friend, he MUST be on the quest as well, or else he/she will NOT be able to go in with you and help.
lol, for me, the skelleton was MUCH harder...because assholes kept crowding the ???. You know how hard it is to kill something when it's Blood Sabering from that many people!?

This fight was far from hard :/. I just finished the dragon with my brother, 30BLM, and another LS buddy, 30WAR, since we all needed the quest anyway. I honestly think I could have soloed it had I brought some juice and maybe a Ether >_>.
Also I'm having trouble finding the Adventuring Fellow guide we used to have on these forums, can anyone give me a link? I wanna read up on it incase theirs info there not in the wiki page.

Here (http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/general-ffxi-discussion/48849-how-raise-your-npc-buddy.html) you go, Clever Ninja. You can also find a lot of useful info over at the Wiki (I use it primarily, since I don't have to sort through posts that way), but the guide is really handy regardless.

Would a lvl 30 BLU/RDM be able to solo either/both NM's or should I wait until at least lvl 35 to try to solo the 2 fights?-- I am asking because the nm guide(forgot what site it was from) says something about the Dragon being lvl 49?

It might be worth a try, if nothing else. The fights are really rather easy.

I also soloed this Dragon, as a 40 RDM, and while RDM is more easily soloable than other jobs, it was very easy to handle.

Is there a need to do it at 35? Get to lvl 40 first, or very close to it, and then try.
Better to be safe than sorry.
lol, for me, the skelleton was MUCH harder...because assholes kept crowding the ???. You know how hard it is to kill something when it's Blood Sabering from that many people!?I had this problem too, and lost the first fight, but they fixed this issue. Members outside of your party who currently don't hate, won't be effected by the AoE. I had 3 other parties standing, I drop it's HP to about 15% and it drains back damn near all it's HP from EVERYBODY standing around. Killing all of our NPCs. Not an issue now.
As far as the fight goes, I went in as a RDM37 in my RSE, wasted all kinds of time buffing up, (Stoneskin, Pro/Shell, Blink, Phalanx etc; take a long time to cast.) and I was 4 seconds from beating the record. If I hadn't bothered with buffs, which as I recall were wiped once I entered, I probably would have beat the record by 20 seconds or more. Any DD job would destroy it in short order.

Aa a lvl 29 BLU what set up would I need for the dragon? I assume I wont be able to solo it(even though I almost soloed the skeleton--had a lvl 30 help me beat it), but would like to finish this quest. Can a 30 BLU and a 30 BLM be able to take the dragon? I can also go as a 30 RDM(but have better damage spells with BLU)

Why is it so difficult to attaint lvl 40 first?
I think you will have an extremely hard time at lvl 30, even with help, who's also lvl 30.
Just make it easier on yourself, get lvl 40. Or 39, even.

Eohmer, honestly, this guy is hard from hard for a 40cap fight.
Anyway, if you went 30BLU(with Magic Fruit and the Auto Regen trait up)., and both you and the BLM brought drinks and possibly a Hi-Ether, and you subbed WAR to tank the first half of the fight, you'll do fine honestly. He isn't as hard as I thought he would be considering the fight IS 40 capped and all.

I did the fight as a level 40 Hume bard using my AF knife because I was so cheap. He wasn't easy but it wasn't hard, my NPC was the one that really came to save the day. Once she came out it was a piece of cake.
