According to what I read on BG, it's any of the Pursurers in the Temple Tonberry, as well as THF tonberries in den of rancor.

Edit: Whoops, hit post button too soon.
You can find the tonberries in the temple in a few places. The obvious place is by the THF knife NM (that whole map, if I remember right). There's also some up past the prelate key doors where that large doll runs up and down the stairs in a circle. I think there's some in the area of the temple where you run through the den of rancor leveling spot (the tormentor lizards), but that may be the same map as the THF knife NM. >_>a

Oh, and there may be a couple where the tonberry Kinq pops, but you need two keys to get there (prelate and another key that the tonberry cutters drop), and it's a pretty small room.

Think i may try by the tonberry kinq thing pops cause last night the whole place was filled including area by carby mitts NM, you know the pos of that room where kinq pops? i bet there arent as many people there, also might try den of rancor

P.S. you know anyone who got drop from den of rancor ones?

Yeah the zone from DoR is the same area as where Sozu pops. Down the hall from Sozu are all the spawn points for the Ugg. Offering and then past that is the DoR zone.

That'll pass soon. It's just people that felt they didn't have a chance in hell getting a Thief's Knife all trying it at once.

Murphie

Exactly. Once more people get them, it will die down. And since I doubt SE is going to change the 100% drop rate (because really, it doesn't affect how good of a THF you are), so there will be plenty of time for others to get one.

yeah i agree my friend got his i might just wait till i ding 70thf (68 atm) to try to camp those again its kinda aggrivating when you lose miss claim

thf knife down to 3.8 million on remora. so a lot of them in bazaar today.
i was at ulli last night and having ~70 in that room claiming aura statues was pretty lame. those statues never felt so loved before.

Murphie
03-09-2007, 09:22 AM
I think it's great. The Knife is just +1 to TH. It's not really that great a weapon, and doesn't really change the quality of the THF that holds it. However, a lot of people got into shells specifically because of having this knife, not because they were particularly good at their jobs. This update changes that, which I think is a good thing.

And if the people who are angry that it's not longer as precious want to cry, they should talk to the folks who had a Weskit before the prices dropped, and people who leveled to 75 before they dropped the exp requirements to get there, and SMN who got their summons before the level 20 cap fights were put in, etc, etc.

Nothing stays precious forever. If you define yourself by how rare a piece of your gear is, you're bound to be disappointed sooner or later.

eticket109
03-09-2007, 10:06 AM
Yeah... I've lost millions in gear over the last couple of years and I know I have it easy compared to most.

Randwolf
03-09-2007, 11:06 AM
Sylph was at 1.4 million this morning.

The pop item drop is hella rare, if you can even claim a Pursuer. 6 hours of killing them, when I could get one. No drop yet.

Like a lot of people, I rushed there when I first got on, thinking it was perhaps a mistake. However, looking at the Thief job, and the main reason you are brought along is either hate control or TH; the fact that you can manipulate stats to increase hate control but had no way, outside of countless Dynamis trips or trying to get claim on something with a horrible drop rate or shelling out 7 - 14 million gil, to increase your TH; that the damage on the TK is relatively dismal and the TH bump is almost negiligible, S/E made the correct choice on changing this item to a new system of acquirement (other than adding a new item).

Now to get this, you will spend countless hours proving how crappy TH is trying to get a normal mob to drop a rare item which when used will have a good probability, relatively speaking, to get you something you should have for your job. The focus of getting the Thief's Knife is now effort instead of luck or shelling out millions in gil you should be spending on gear to increase your effectiveness in hate control, accuracy, damage, etcetera.

I spent a lot of time camping Sozu before update, making numerous claims against other players and RMT and never getting the drop. True, from a selfish viewpoint, when I farm I want a better chance for drops but there are also times, like trying to help others with their Ancient Papyrus or coffer keys, where the only satisfaction is helping someone. So, yes, for those who spent way more hours camping or farming to get this, I sympathyze. But I also know people who just happened upon Sozu and got the drop without working at it.

This change is truly something that was long past due for those who leveled a job which sometimes gets no respect nor party invites (i.e. - all the tanks leveling are currently Paladins). So get your TK, have fun with the minimal bump for farming and assisting others and have a good thought in your heart that S/E took a risk at pissing off a small minority to help the majority of Thieves.

I know that TH3 isn't but like 1% or something....

... but on Gods, it really seems to make a huge difference. It feels like your busting through a breaking point in the drop rates. It just makes things appear more often than usual. It could be a subjective feeling. -shrugs-

When I've went to camp for Moldavite Earring w/my LS, the LS leader has a THF Knife and we have never -not- gotten the earring to drop when he was in party. That's for so many ppl already. That also made me a firm believer in THF Knife.

But I may as well list the disclaimer: [*Individual results may vary.]

Okay so it's confirmed to drop off of Tonberry THF type in the temple and then den of rancor?

WishMaster3K
03-09-2007, 11:39 AM
I've only ever camped MysticMaker once, so I'll refrain from commenting on that. *smirk*

But this definitely made raising THF more possible. I was originally gonna take it to at least 60, but now that I'm thinking of unlocking Evisceration and such, this might be perfect incentive to take it to a higher level.

Of course, I don't know why though, I've never been a fan of farming :P

yup i got one last night not sure on moon or stuff like that i dont bother to worry about that stuff. Go in from paint room and as soon as you walk in open area of den of rancor is a spawn point for 3 thf type tonberry's there. Or there are some other spots that are less camped probably but i claimed with Dia ftw

Friends took me last night for a little bit to help them claim lol. They wanted me to use Chainspell, so I did. However, we didn't get any drops and claimed very little. It's like a madhouse in the Temple.

When I logged off last night, price was down to 2mil.

The drop rate is 100%. This is a glitch that SE will fix very soon, so get your thief's knife while you still can.

Zempten
03-10-2007, 06:55 AM
Yeah, well it doesn't matter if SE is going to fix it very soon because it's impossible to claim. Temple of Ulg just became Ulli camp pre-patch.

Also how do you know it's going to be fixed soon? Cause the drop rate of the pop item seems poor. It reminds of Hornetneedle kinda, but more annoying.

Murphie

They haven't officially said anything, and they've already fixed claiming issues and other mistakes from this recent update, so don't you think they would have fixed one that dramatically changed the drop rate for an item?

It's a glitch. So far on Seraph, every person that has claimed it has received one. Just past the first day, almost everyone in Rolanberry fields was auctioning off a thief's knife. At this rate, the price of the luxury item that is thiefs knife is going to keep going down.

The fact that it's so easy to obtain now makes TH 3 a common thing, rather than a luxury to have.

Murphie
03-10-2007, 07:34 AM
Yes, because the drop rate was changed to 100%. Why do you think that's a glitch? Did you not read my post earlier about how placing value in "rare" items will eventually come and bite you in the ass when their status changes and suddenly the item isn't rare anymore?

TH3 doesn't have to be a luxury. It doesn't change things that much, and it doesn't make a bad THF a good THF. It just helps a bad THF get invites to endgame shells they otherwise wouldn't be wanted in, because they can further contribute to drops for everyone else. It was a ridiculous system, and I'm glad that SE has made the item so commonplace.

Besides, it's still a bitch to get a flickering lantern, so it's not as though you can just walk into the temple and pick up a knife on the ground.

I guess so. A lot of thiefs took pride in having TH3 ( and TH4 ) and I'll bet that this will pisss them off a great deal. It would make sense to get the thief who knows more about the game as opposed to the thief that has a better treasure hunter. Unfortunately, a lot of endgame ls's, and dynamis linkshells alike, are really interested in is the drop rate on stuff.

If it isn't a glitch, some of the lesser TH thiefs will have a chance of getting into good linkshells based on merit, as opposed to how much treasure hunter they have.

BRDs who bought themselves a Manteel, and BLMs who bought Weskits have learned to deal. Thieves will too. I know it's not exactly the same as camping a drop, but it's close. A lot of people gave up and bought a Thief's Knife anyway.

Maybe THFs should start with taking pride in using their SA and TA "efficiently" >.>

Anyways, let's not derail the topic here and focus about the pop item for Sozu. Let's find more camps for the trailers in Den of Rancor.

03-10-2007, 07:51 AM
yeah, when something is to the point where it's almost required, and yet nearly impossible for most people (who don't have time to camp and camp and...) then i'd hope SE would change it. 100% seems a little much to change right off the bat, but hey, if THFs are going to be rated on their abilities now instead of one (or two, I guess, although Armlets aren't as big a deal) piece of EQ, it's an improvement, even if it's a bit too cheap.

Done!
80-something Tonberries for a lantern. TK dropped from Sozu.

RMT were absolutely monopolizing zone. I guess they were trying to keep people from getting the lantern so they would have to buy the TK from them. And for some strange reason, when they had a claim, I kept accidentally aggro'ing the Bonze Marberry and loosing hate when he was in their midst. The best was an Everybody's Rancor on an RMT for over 17K. But I felt bad, because it was an accident.

But hey what can I say, if it weren't for their monopolizing the zone, I wouldn't have had to take risks pulling the Pursuer from the Bonze Marberry room.

Good luck getting your lantern and TK. Price has dropped considerably but for those who like to get their own gear, it can be quite a lot of camping and killing.

Plus side: Seals and experience points.
Negative: Asshat RMT who can take a fun thing S/E intended for PC's and ruin it with their cheating and greed.

BTW -
1) Bonze Marberry is not "true sight" and will loose aggro with Hide.
2) Dismayers' Elementals will see through your Hide, so Flee or fight them.
3) Clear your hate periodically. If you have a non-Pursuer, you can CFH and no hate will be added to your total when you kill it. I saw mostly RMT and a few players who got smacked with a Grudge that killed them. Bonze Marberry does Rancor which is way more damage for each Tonberry you have killed (use caution if you decide to kill him. Plus he loves -ga's so "goodbye, shadows")
4) Clear hate once you get lantern before fighting Sozu
5) Have Hi-Pots with you so a Throat Stab won't possibly make you loose your Sozu fight (I had to come kill a Sozu for a player who died. Fortunately, RMT in the room had gone AFK so they didn't claim it when he died)

Good hunting!

...simple solution people stop buying gil its really that easy no rmt's then , i stopped myself from saying the nubs need to stop buying gil cause its the big dynamis sky ls's that buy most of it :wtf::shocked: end rant

I totally agree. No market means the product ceases to be produced. However, RMT are also practicing market economics. TK had gotten down to 380K then the flow of TK's stopped: RMT have placed a strangle-hold on the Pursuers so that they can have more influence on the number of TK's available and the price went back up to a million gil. I don't think it will hold there but RMT are attempting to make as much gil off this as possible before the market dries up.

But, again, using market economics, reducing the flow/amount of the RMT's product which is sold externally for RL money will push up the RL price. Price goes up, market which can afford to buy it gets smaller.

So, to diminish RMT, attempt to reduce the external market by

1) Discouraging players from buying gil,
2) By making the product more expensive and thus reduce demand by excluding players with less disposable income from buying,
3) Reduce RMT's ability to gain items to sell for gil by incapaciting their drones,
4) Slow RMT's ability to gain items/gil and raise their overhead by removing drones from the game and forcing them to spend time leveling new characters,
5) Reduce the value of items by introducing Rare/Ex versions and reducing demand for non-Rare/Ex versions,
6) Excluding (or actively hampering) PC's who are known gil buyers from receiving any assistance from other PC's

I'm sure there are other things we could do. FFXI was designed as a "closed" economy so that accomplishments were based upon effort exerted within game and external wealth was purposely designed to be excluded. It's why I decided to play the game. I wanted to play a game where my external wealth had no bearing on the game. Sure, people with more spare time (time = money) can achieve more in game but people with any logical sense knew that when they agreed to abide by the TOS.
