I am currently having some issues with FFXI in which at the startup screen, the buttons for character select, delete, and the bottom one are so bright and highlighted that I cannot see them, same goes for in-game buttons like status, friend list, etc.
Only the character create button was the normal dark blue/purple in color. Settings on my monitor are fine... this is just odd. Any ideas?

Have you tried performing a file check? That could be a good start.

Have you recently changed video cards? I read somewhere a while back that certain video cards produced exactly these types of errors. Try updating your vid card drivers and see if that helps...
If that doesn't help, you can try a re-install...but from what I remember reading this was an unresolved issue with that certain type of card and there wasn't a whole lot that could be done. It may have been fixed however...
What are your system specs?

looking at those specs, I think it has to be the vid card(s).
all of that is a bit beyond my scope though.

I'm going to do a file check first and then try tweaking my cards a bit. I'll post if I figure it out.
It's definitely the cards. If you scan the nVidia forums there's a thread on FFXI where it's a known bug (there's another thread on Dreams here that mentions it too).
I have an 8800GTS card that has/had the same issue. There is a workaround for it that involves overwriting the .dat file with one that uses a different color scheme. The buttons look a little different afterwards but are quite readable.
Buddalove on this thread: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=21265&st=80 was able to help me out. He was still looking into it and may have found more / a better answer since I emailed him.
Just FYI, check guru3d. New drivers from there should fix this. This problem was caused by old 8800GTX drivers, and it's about time they fixed it.
