View Full Version : Equipment/Gear Swaps - Change out DEX/AGL for STR/ATT/ACC?

I've played THF to 60 on a previous character, so I know from experience how DEX/AGL equipment work and the two usual subs of NIN and WAR that are used for THF.

However, when I played THF before, I always kept on DEX/AGL gear for the fulltime of the career, until I hit LV60 and got DE and started using ATT/ACC.

My question is: why did I keep DEX/AGl gear on my person, equipped, at all times, instead of swapping that gear in for SATA and SATA/WS?

Well, the one thing I can think of is that.... way back in 2003-2004, that's just what every THF was doing. And given my very limited experience w/melee, I just did what everyone else did because it seemed to work.

But, I was thinking yesterday, why don't I instead, only swap in DEX/AGL equipment for SATA & SATA/WS and primarily use STR/ATT/ACC gear + /WAR for Berserk at LV30 plus for better DoT during the career?

Is this what most normal THF's do these days? Or is it normal to just be fully geared w/DEX/AGL equipment and go from there?

Surely this has been brought up and discussed before, so I wanted to know other pplz opinions about the subject.

I know there's tons of gear that has STR ACC and ATT that you can use to buff up your dagger damage. I also know you can use Haste gear to increase your dagger speed. That's the other thing I wonder about. Exactly what is a THF Haste build?

Thank you friends for any information you can provide about this. I'd really like to maximize my THFs potential.

Also there wasnt as much gear options back then.

Yes, using a balance of ATT/ACC/STR/Haste is ideal. This paired with using /WAR greatly boosts THF damage. Most good THFs do not use /NIN for EXP except in situations where /WAR is just not practical.

Haste builds include gear like Swift Belt (http://ffxi.somepage.com/itemdb/7069), Rapparee Harness (http://ffxi.somepage.com/itemdb/6214), and a low delay damage dagger. At 75 Haste builds would include a full set of Homam gear.

Simple, yet powerful in its points. Thank you for clairification.

I'll need to sit down and see what Homam gear is and what other items, if any, relate to Haste.

One thing I was thinking was, ppl don't sub DRG for the Haste gear, on their THF do they? lol

Don't forget that Haste is useless for SA, TA and WS, so you'll want to swap it out for more atk, dex or agi (or possibly acc for Dancing Edge). Especially the swift belt which is also -attack.

Homam gear is from Proto-Omega, one of the bosses of Limbus. There's intense competition for it and it will probably take many months, if not years, to accumulate several pieces (let alone a full set, lol).

Personally, I would go for +DEX and +STR/ATTK.

AGI is only going to be useful for dodging and hitting with R.Attacks.
If you really want to rely on R.Attacks for damage or TP build, you'd sub /RNG anyways.

I say DEX, because its your factor in criticial hits and therefore influences your SA directly, then add on extra ATTK and STR to boost to optimum damage.

And ACC is always nice, no matter what melee class you are.

On my old THF I had 4 sets of gear. I will list them below with the stats they focused on.

1. TP Build - +Acc, +Haste
2. Puling/Ranged Attack - +RAcc, +RAtk
3. SA - +DEX, +Atk
4. SATA - +DEX and +AGI balanced, +Atk

Four sets was a lot of switching, and a lot of gear to carry around, but you would be surprised at how much better you can perform with it all.

Acc + Haste for TP........ definitely keeping that in mind.

I didn't think working towards getting a hit Crit Hit Rate% was worth it. Or is it?

@75 you want as much +haste as you can get, which the cap is 25% for gear then you get 15% from Haste spell or double March. But the idea is to get as fast TP as possible since THF @75 is only invited for dmg output, not hate control, since hate goes everywhere in TP Burn lol, and you need to keep up with the other DD as much as possible.

Swift Belt/Speed Belt + Homam is the currently the best setup for +Haste, but you can get by with less, such as Rapparee Harness/Bravo's Subligar/Dusk Gloves(if you can afford them)/Walahra Turban and low delay daggers, Blau Dolch + Sirocco Kukri being preferred.

Then of course have Str(not required but helps standard dmg)/Dex/Acc gear for DE. Str is purely for normal hits (only slightly affects dmg of Dagger WSs for THF, since most like DE are critical-hit based for higher dmg), and will come on gear like Homam/Babarossa's sets.

I prefer Barbarossa's Zerehs for legs due to Str/Acc/Haste, for WS body I'd have to say Skadi's Cuirie is THE best (look up the stats, also remember that 30% of DE dmg is based on CHR =P), other than that, can try to get either Scorpion Harness(Acc is important, especially if you can't afford the higher Dex bodies)/Pahluwan Khazagand/Dragon Harness. Alot of the new gear, like Skadi and Denali still has alot of info missing, but it will get posted as people learn more about it.

My personal goal right now though is getting full Skadi gear =P This is gonna take a very long time ; ;, and most likely more painful to get than items for BLU's Morrigan's Armor set. lol

Sorry if I got slightly off-topic <_< Just pointing out available options, as well as the newer ones =D

Anytime ^.^;; Unfortunately light never sheds on the newer gear until way later in the game, long after it was originally implemented, and then people start talking alot about it. But I like to be the best I can be, so I do alot of research, especially the first couple weeks after a major update to FF lol Try to stay in-the-know, ya know? =P Anywho, enjoy lvling THF again in the super-upgrade-crazy-prices era =D lol
