View Full Version : So much for good deeds :/

You know, when I'm out an about on BST (or any job) in the game, I try to help people along the way if I can make time to do so. BST EXP isn't exactly fast, so I don't mind terribly to help a PT out of a jam or whatever, its not going to break my progress by much.

So I had my GC coffer key, soloed it myself on Hellmines in GC - scary for any other job my level, but doable since I can create mindless minions for my own purposes. Got the key on first kill after I logged in, in fact.

So I start roaming between the banishing gates, checking behind #3 first. Since just logging in and out and checking there isn't much of an interesting evening to me, I move on to check gate #2.

Get the gate #2 and no one's really there to open the gate, so I poke around and get some light EXP off the bats, explosures, beetles, skeles and what not. BLM and MNK run by and the BLM is getting beaten down hard. They go further past the switches and the BLM dies. MNK now has skeleton aggro.

In short, I take some links, heal the MNK and raise the BLM.

Good deed, right?

Some short time later while the BLM is in the corner resting, a PLD at half HP turns the corner with a mass swarm of bats, MNK jumps into the fray and is getting beaten sensless. I proceed to help control the pet population by charming and using Leave to despawn the bats in question, then follow up with some Cure IIIs. They thank me.

Good deed, right?

Just so happens we now have four people in the vicinity of the switches. We can open a gate and...

They tell me to go away so they can get in the gate with no competition for the coffer. The same exact MNK I saved twice over moments ago. And then a RNG buddy of hers comes in to try to impose this as well. While it is true I did need the coffer chest, I was also there to see the potential for camping back there. The mobs are comprable to the chamber beetle camp in the first basement.

I could have tried to explain that to them, that I didn't need the coffer ASAP and could just wait back there while I EXPed, but it was clear they just now saw me as some evil coffer-popping thief for just wanting to go behind the gate. God forbid I get some EXP and get my AF later as a perk.

I didn't budge from leaving because I didn't have to. I'm just really amazed by the gall those people had to turn around and act like that. At least the BLM and PLD were nice about it and didn't harass me. They finally broke down and opened the door when I called their bluff on "we have have all day to wait." I proceed to go in and start having a look around at pets

BLM gets the coffer, and the RNG proceeds to rub it in my face. Like I really care. Good for the BLM. I don't think I would have raised him in the first place if I was blackhearted enough to refuse helping known competition.

I swear there are days people in this game make the RMT look like saints. Oh well, makes future my merit PTs easier to build.

/comfort

I've had similar experiences as well. While power leveling a friend who's only just recently joined in the dunes, this IDIOT MNK goes and smacks what had to be at least a VT goblin. Suffice to say he was dead within seconds. My friend then jumped on the mob to finish it off and after that I raised the dead MNK.

Almost immediately after he's up, he tells me to f*ck off. Yah, that's nice. He was probably pissed that I didn't cure him. I could have, but I decided not to because I was already busy helping my friend, and to teach this guy a valuable lesson about what you can and can't handle alone.

It makes me really sad the kind of assholes that exist :( It's really disturbing when I've been camping an NM for a couple hours and some guy just shows up out of nowhere and sends me a tell claiming that the NM "belongs" to him (as if to act like he'd been there all along when I *KNOW* he just got there, to say nothing that you simply cannot lay claim to an NM before it pops anyway).

Yeah, I don't know what's with people nowadays. I thought you had to get into an HNM for petty, stupid drama. Some people just seem determined to drag that cut-throat, backstabbing tension through every aspect of the game.

Isn't UR a villiage in FFIII? I get confused when people type like that, since UR reminds me of a village in FFIII.

As for the topic on hand..

People like that are why I hate the current community of FFXI (for the most part), I mean, if you let them die, they would cuss you out so on and so forth, you save them, they pull this..

Besides, I've NEVER had trouble with RMT (none have ever been rude to me) but I've had more trouble with the "legit" playerbase for things like this..

I was on RDM, and I was in Garliage helping a friend, now, at level 75 I don't use my AF legs, I use my Duelist Tights, Crimson or Vendor's, so a group of people /checked me and sent me a tell saying:

"Wth? You better not be trying to get my (lol) coffer, go away or I'll GM you."

I'm just like:

"Whatever helps you sleep at night, oh and I don't want the coffer, for the record, I have full AF so "your" coffer is safe, but I should inform you, that my friend already opened the coffer behind gate 3 10 minutes ago, so you're outta luck on trying to get "his" coffer :)"

He didn't respond to me after that. lol.

Garliage coffer compition is always silly. I hate that place for getting AF, especially when it's non-glove AF, so I have to go there as a level 50-60 job and worry about getting killed.

I used to get in trouble with a friend I duoed with because I'd keep helping people that I didn't know, and it'd either bite us in the rear or take up our time. I never really did learn my lesson on that.

Yeah, this is my last GC coffer ever, CZB coffer is next and I'm done with the original AFs on my taru. NIN is next for my mithra and after that, ToA AFs only, no more coffer headaches.

I finally just camped behind the third gate in GC. Happened to check about 45 mins later and there was the coffer. A RDM stepped in front of it moments before me and started buffing to avoid aggro upon popping the chest.

Too bad they were buffing.

Yoink. Beast Helm MINE!

I was given a stern talking-to in japanese, possibly claiming that was her coffer and not mine. Can't say for sure as I don't know any japanese.

More than conflict of cultures (since I assume you're not Japanese) so it could be a courtesy thing she was talking about (if you had a SS I could translate it) otherwise dunno xD.

Well if it boiled down to "I was closer to it," I would just say "I was here longer than you, you just happened to log in next to it."

BSTs are treated like second class citizen in this game. Just becase we can solo somehow means other people are more important because they usually PT. Though we do wear the red ribbon, a corset, shoot pink hearts and we also have crabs... that might have something to do with it.

But the pain subsides after I start rolling around in all the Beastmen and Kindred Seals I pick up solo. I walk away from my PTs with all the loot, all the seals and tank doesn't gripe at me about my subjob.

It might not be nice, but it's funny and, well they should expect it.

Isn't UR a villiage in FFIII?
Ur was a Sumerian city in Mesopotamia, though you might know it better as Southern Iraq.

Anyway, I don't see why people still expect others to be courteous and decent in FFXI. They haven't been that way outside of FFXI for a while, nothing is going to change when they hit that 'Play' button.

But like they say "What goes around comes around" So just because they are d*ck doesn't mean you have to be one to them. Karma will get them back. =)

It's not that I expect people to be decent, I just don't see how they can say things like "I'll call a GM on you" with a straight face. I can accept someone "stealing" my coffer or NM, no matter how much it might piss me off. But I don't understand how one can be so bitchy to another member that just saved them twice. The only explanation is that they haven't reached an acceptable level of maturity.

Beastmasters have yet to get over the days in which buttheads who abused "Leave" would use it to MPK other players. Back then BST = Bastard and their reputation was either diserved, or an unfortunate cautionary measure.

Though the situation has changed, the hurt feelings and mistrust remain, sort of like the regard towards Germany after WWI and II. Because of this lingering resentment towards the class, and the fact that BSTs compete over the same areas of EXP at certain points with players. BST get's a rap thats worse than they actually diserve.

However, BSTs tend to stretch this issue far more than it needs to be. I cannot count the number of "Victimized BST support" threads that have gone by Allah and KI of late, but they are far more than what they should have.

Every player gets the short stick sometimes. Some do more than others. That's either a diserved reputaiton you've earned, or part of the flack that comes with the job. Unless it's an exceedingly rare case, or something REALLY horrible. I don't see the pourpose of people complaining over and over again about the same basic tings.

Being a soloist myself, I don't seem to get nearly as much problems as a RDM soloing as BST' seem to. This may be partly because I am not throwing one monster a party exps on, against another monster the party exps on, which basically means you're claiming two mobs at once for yourself, and not sharing the exp, from the viewpoint of the party.

Personally, I don't outwardly mind BSTs. But I've have had bad expriences with BST's who tried to MPK my friends and I back in the day, and do still get defensive around them at times. However I still do my best to try to get along with them as much as possible.

Anyways, I don't think BST had anything to do with your incident BBQ. I beleive it had more to do with that party being greedy and over-worried about their coffer; as it was said before, more of an issue of maturity than an issue of you being a BST at the time.

Sorry the people you helped were rude to you, but as the saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished.

Most seasoned soloist players will make an effort to avoid taking on EXP mobs PTs EXP on. There are levels where EXPing in a zone common for EXP PTs is totally unavoidable.

My current choices for camp are GC or Bost. Oub. under the Chateau in Sandoria. Both teeming with the undead, one where my best pet mob choice are highly resistant to charm. No EXP PT I know of does Hellmines and no other job save for SMN would dare to try to solo them at a comprable level, so GC it is. Even with Blink, Stoneskin and Barfira up, those things hit like a Mac Truck.

PTs that don't like it could EXP in BO, but they're not going to.

I actually had the opposite happen to me this weekend. I was in Toramai Canal helping an LS Mate get a key. After about 20 minutes of destroying bats, skellies and fish on BST, I saw a PUP in there soloing bats. After about 15 mins I asked if he was only killing bats, he said yes.

So I left the rest of the bats alone, and started killing Skellies and fish.

He was happy because he could now get to some bats that he couldn't before.

Next day, I was in Garlaige Coffer hunting for my MNK AF. I got behind the first gate because a party was there. I ran around to check the end of the hall behind gate 2 and it was there. Unfortunately, I didn't have anyone else to opne the door with me.

I went and sat by the first banishing gate, and about 30 mins later, here comes the pup with 3 other people. I waved to him and asked if he was looking for the coffer. he said yes, so I told him where it was. He told me to come through the gate with them so that I could pick it up.

At the gate, I Sneaked and Invised and ran through as they opened it. I went, uninvised and got the coffer, and then proceeded to get killed. One of the other guys who came through was a smn, stood there and watched me die, then walked away.

I didn't mind, I got my AF and HP'd home.

Sometimes, doing a good deed does get back to you.

I don't play bsts, but I soloing has helped me get aqquainted with them and how they play.

GC is a pain in the neck, cause even if you are attacking hellmines, the best monster you have at that range to throw at it are Bats, a monster most 45-47 players will exp on.

While normally it's rather easy for a BST to get along with a party in similar situations, Hellmines, like you said, hit like a Mack Truck (I've hand unfortunate encounters with them.) and tend to rip through bats rather easily. Between that and Self-Destruct, BSTs tend to charm a lot of bats at times to take down stubborn Hellmines.

This is completely fine, and not the BST's fault. But more than one BST down in that area will kill too many bats typically and really hurt a party's exp flow.

All and all though, I think GC is the only place where parties and BST's really butt heads where neither can move on to another camp if the other is already camping, which makes that place just hell all around.

there's also beetles :) personally beetles last longer vs hellmines and usually only need 1 of them to get a hell mine to explode.

cn, qc, and kuftal are other places where pts and bst tend to bump heads. i know i have in those areas.

its tough to say who is right but i think general rule of thumb is, whoever is there first at that camp. should have dibs on that camp.

whenever i went down to the basement in gc and there was a pt in the tunnel near the 4 hellmine spawns, i'd leave it alone. i'd go else where. however, it was =never= the same way around. if i was the only person in that tunnel first, and a pt came along, they would go about their business and buff and pt on top of me.

i think the 'bst victim support' line you talked about in a previous post stems from incidents like these. the exact same circumstances that xp pts hate bst do not get taken into consideration when a xp pt screws with a bsts xp. its a 1 way street many times.

the mpk fear/resentment from before i think is outdated and not even an issue. everyone knows that they cant mpk like they used to anymore. you brought up ww2, and i really dont feel that ppl are resentful towards japanese or germans anymore. yea you'll have your uneducated/idiot people out there, but i really dont think that the fear of mpk(or ze germans crossing over into belgium) is really point to be made.

anyhow, to the op. i cured and raised 2 nub in valkrum the other day while pl'ing myself on my other account. after raising people, i got crap for not curing them or keeping them alive. i was pretty amazed so i had to put the nub in his place. people are dumb. its just hard to accept sometimes that people can actually be that thick in the face.

I usually send a Beetle after them and if the Hellmine is still alive after, I send a jug pet after it. If I just use bats each time, i'll have nothing to fall back on and PTs will get even slower EXP.

Life will get easier in EXP zones soon. PTs will start going to ToA zones, refuse to leave ToA zones (wimps :P ) and have left most of the RoZ and CoP zones abandoned. After that its just those wierdos that enjoy levelling their NPCs that I'll be butting heads with.

yea exactly, I can't wait till they all go to ToA. Life will be good. I have been doing basically the same w/beetles in GC vs. Hellmines, but I would charm the occasional bat if the beetle died, maybe I should buy some cheap jugs n use them instead, its a good idea to save things for the xp parties there.

To not let you have the coffer after raising and helping them was just ... ill mannered. Not even helping through the gate? That's way out of line.

I know now your stance on person-specific issues should stay in private conversation, but I think you should name names in this instance--what good does it do for the community if people like that can always get away with such behavior without penalty? :vent:

Fact is, the community with still PT with an asshole, accept them into their LS or even an HNMLS (because, of course, they're a warm body, they don't have to like the warm body, just have it camp HNMs for manpower).

I thought about posting their names, but I had my fill of naming names in a particular thread last year. I have a mithran alter ego, a COR and a BRD to take advantage when these guys come looking for merits or EXP from me. If I join a PT and they're in it I can ask they be kicked or I'll leave the PT.

Lose a BRD or COR or lose some replaceable melee? Not a hard call for most PTs. Its rare I abuse my position as COR or BRD in that fashion, but a fringe benefit that makes me smile when it does. Revenge is a dish best served cold.

There was a rather satisfying altercation in a friend's PT the other day. I'll name this name just because I derive joy from their suffering. Jei will most likely know of this person.

We have this chick named Limica on Titan, more or less a bought account through various in-game friends who was, in turn, given to the girlfriend of the most recent account owner.

She has done all manner of things in real life and in-game that would rank her as one of the most revolting people I have ever encountered. Not only did she cheat on this RL boyfriend, she did it with a RL and in-game friend. The BF then deleted her account and she used identity theft (his SSN#, DoB and Credit card info) to lie that she was him to SE via email and have that account restored. She then got into her BF's account and sold his Osode, Manteele and Ebow. There's a load of other things, I won't detail them.

So my friend - a THF - was in a merit PT with Limica. Limica was a WHM at the time and making all kinds of complaints about how she had been treated in-game.

And, in this PT, my THF friend and the other PT members had be talking in /tell about her incessant whining. The THF tells the leader, "I do happen to have a 75 WHM, you can kick her, get a new melee and I'll come back WHM."

And so they kicked Limica

Most recently, people in her Dynamis shell outbid her on her DRG AFv2 and unbeknowst to her, no one that had made the bids had DRG at the appropriate level, but gladly took it anyway when it dropped.

Here's another one.

Just spent three days last week - along with countless deaths, EXP loss and hemorraging gil - to help a friend get Diabolos. The losses I don't mind and I really needed nothing from the run. But, still, I'd wouldn't mind getting some PTs out of it at least.

My BST is the same level as her SMN, or was anyway. Asked her about levelling together, if only a few levels, so I could get my AFs done and out of the way.

"But you can solo."

Well, yeah, I can. It's kinda slow and the level range I'm in really sucks. She typically would help her friends, we've levelled together before so, why not? What's it going to hurt?

Just lame.
