View Full Version : Most unfortunate lag moments

Was EXPing in Quicksand Caves last night as BST (that common 42-45 Beetle/spider camp off East Altepa). After about two hours another BST roams in... with a PL (which is pretty shameful considering he was 52).
Well after a few minutes, he realizes I'm there and apologizes for moving in on my camp and says he'll go find another, which I appreciated. But it looked like he decided to get a little EXP in before he left.
I was fighting an Anitcan PLD a few minutes later and I turned to see him getting wailed on by two spiders, he must've had a charm resisted. His WHM buddy had ported elsewhere, apparently.
I figured if I could ditch my current pet, I stood a chance to save him from his mischarmed pet. I'd just charm the spider he was struggling with and send it after the antican I was fighting. Not the first time I've done that to help somone.
Then, the world stops and I'm the only one that can move. Lag. This is bad since I'm still engaged with the antican and when you d/c in such a situation, you're very likely going to die. I've had that happen before... and its always as BST.
Then the world zips into fast-forward. My beetle is now destroying the ant PLD and I see the other BST just barely got out of his mischarm alive.
After I reset my router, it the lagging stopped, still, I HATE IT when that happens.

Under Observation BCNM40... blah that sucked. I ended up dying.

I don't generally lag out at unfortunate moments. If I'm worried that I might, I just lower my settings so as not to have a problem (Dynamis, for instance.)

Isnt lag your connection failing and then recieving everything at once rather than your graphics settings?

There's graphical lag, when the game is loading too much at once, and connection lag, when you're not sending or recieving packets at the appropriate rate. Both can cause slow-downs followed by fast-forwards.

Wow, nice timing for this thread. About an hour ago, I saw Wyvernpoacher Drachlox pop in Gustav. I was waiting for more members to come in my LS or some high levels to come roaming through the area. Eventually, my connection started lagging, and I had to restart. I figure it's fine, as no one is in Gustav, so I check my email and stuff for a few minutes.
When I log back in, I see a group of four farming White Mage testimonies, and no more Wyvernpoacher. They're Japanese, so I couldn't get too much out of them, but it seems they were only there for testimonies, and just killed the NM because he was in the way.
So, yeah, I'm gonna go kill myself.
Heh, I got one for ya. Me and my limbus party finally cleared Apollyon NW. Black mage piece drops. I'm the only one who needs it, and my computer literally freezes up. Luckily, I was able to get on in time to lot on it and get it.
edit: You broke the post count limit murphie. The computer still registers you as the keeper of knowledge. I thought the next level would be "God" or something.

Lagged out completely (as in dc'd) In one or two assaults and once right as we were starting a promy for a friend. Its usually while I'm crafting or something like that. Though I did lag during a trade to quiver some bolts, trade didnt go through, but it took two stacks of bolts. That made me very happy.
And I think we're gonna change Murphie's tag to say "Post Whore"
J/k Murph ;)

I'm not a post whore though. I've always thought that such a silly term. I don't care how many posts I have. :/ I would have liked a new title at 4000 though. Boo to that.
Of course, I still miss being able to change the color and font of our names.

I know, but I fell like the only person who's never taken a shot at your posts, I felt lonely.
And, last I heard, Ping is working on all that.
Oh.....lagging.....everytime I lag it pisses me off. I can usually work through it in xp parties, but my effectiveness gets crappy, pulling is something that just isn't gonna happen, and I'm usually yelling at the monitor.
I kinda miss the gil system. Right before they got rid of it, I was about to change everyone's names to moogle's names with the 1 million gil I had.

I did have some bad lag issues a while back, but since I got more RAM, and got a better internet connection, I seriously never have those kind of problems anymore. It's pretty nice, since nothing ruins my mood more than being stymied in my attempts at a leisurely night of gaming.
edit: That would have been funny, Mog.
And Caspian, I understand. ;) It is a bit embarrassing to be the only regular member on the top posters list.

I miss my name color and the RPG. :(
I lagged out right after accepting someone's gil for a teleport, then I d/c'ed and couldn't get back on right away. For a while there I was worried that the guy thought I'd done it on purpose but he was pretty understanding.

Hmm, best/worst time I ever lagged...
I was running through Kuftal Tunnel, I started to lag, but no worries, sneak was up, I can still move but I can't see anything around me, but I can still head through Kuftal to Cape Terrigan.
Then things start showing up, and I get a really speeded up sequence of events.
The first awe shit moment came when I saw the message that Guivre was intimidated by me >.>
The second awe shit moment came when the party suddenly appeared in front of my dead corpse ; ;
On the flipside I don't know why I enjoy listening to the screams of others..... While I feel bad for them it was kinda funny watching them try to run, I still don't know why their blm didn't escape them. Their pld could've tossed up invincible and bought time for an escape.

I'm setup completely wirelessly, no hard connections because doing so would mean stringing a cable wire across the middle of my living room floor, which would of course cause all my drunken, clumsy ass friends to immediately seek it out in order to trip on it and break their heads open all over the place.
So yeah, been hit with the lag stick more times then I'd like to remember. And always at the most opportune moments; like when I'm trying to voke off of the WHM who decided to tank for a bit, or when that feverishly contested NM finally pops right in front of me, or when it's my turn to close a skillchain.
Methinks it's time to upgrade to 802.11n...

Weird. My connection is wireless, and I never experience any issues with that. Of course, the router is just in the next room.

Can you not run wires through your attic? Or do you live in an apartment?

Yup, I'm in an apartment. Honestly I don't know what the deal is. When I moved into this apartment about a year and a half ago, I ended up buying a wireless router and 2 pci cards so me and my bro (we live together) could share the net, and for the above mentioned reason's re: drunken friends; we have lots, and our apt is the midpoint between everyone else, so most parties are at my place. Well, that and we have the best toys ^^
Anyways, at the time, I knew bullocks about wireless networking, so I specifically asked about interference from other devices, they're like "oh no, don't worry about it, it'll work". Of course, I quickly discovered that 2.4 GHz phones and wireless internet don't mix very well. Actually, it wasn't quick...took me two weeks of profanity laced tirades and hair pulling to make the connection between being on the phone and having no internet.
Everything was ok until about 2 months ago, then my connection went to hell again. Honestly, I'm at a loss now...the only thing I can think of that could be screwing it up is my Wii, which is also wirelessly connected. The other day I lost my network, and noticed the Wii was doing it's happy blue pulsing light update thing. I powered the Wii down completely and my network was back within minutes...so I'm thinking that was the culprit. At least, that's the only thing that I can think of. It's weird, because our 360, which is also wirelessly connected, never caused problems...
I have like nothing running on the taskbar, I make it a point to specifically disable Norton before I'm getting ready to play FFXI, and it still lags out occasionally. My hardware is pretty current, so who knows? Any suggestions or thoughts are welcome, because it IS pretty damn annoying.

Have you checked for other wireless networks around you with the same/close channel?
Have know faulty microwaves to kill wireless networks, when the shielding is damaged.
My best and ONLY DC in 6 months of playing - party in Valkrum, on the beach and a Bogy aggros. I start healing left right and center, get hate, PLD vokes it off me, and I DC.
Log back in after a hell of a time with POL, and the party is dead, all except me. XD

Yeah, there's like 8 other wireless networks in my building...I farted around with the channels, but it didn't seem to help any. And our microwave is a pretty new built-in, so even if it is the problem, ain't a whole lot I can do about it ; ;
hongman
02-20-2007, 06:49 AM
Lol, well instead of "farting around" with your channels, try something like Netstumbler, which will tell you what channels those networks are on. Then you can adjust accordingly :)
The mcirowave thing was just an example of odd things interfering, only happened once to a client who owned a restaurant. Everytime that oven was used, it knocked out the Credit Card machine :p (Turns out that the microwave had been dropped on delivery and shielding was damaged).
Other than that, you know you can buy Network over Power kits? You plug one end into a wall power socket, and it has a cat5 port on it. One end into your BB router, then other end plug near your PC and Cat5 into that. Solves wireless issues then, with no direct wire to trip over when eveyone is drunk XD

I've recently been pining for a Seawolf Cudgel and Sea Robber Cudgel, so I've made a habit of riding the ferry back and forth looking for Silverhook and Blackbeard. One day, one of them spawned, and I was ecstatic.
I took Silverhook down to about 45% HP with still a healthy amount of my HP left when suddenly my game made a Taj-ish (see "Blue Gartr" forums) crash to the desktop.
I logged back in and some RDM was killing him (or getting killed... not quite sure). Either way, he invited me back into the party to help him out. This story ended well, but I was literally screaming "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" at the screen when it happened.

Hahaha, I can well imagine, I've been riding the ferry for hours so that I can kill a skeleton for the sand charm and I never see the pirates.

Oo I rode the boat from Selbina to Mhaura for the 1st time in ages, and pirates came, and dropped the sand charm. I chucked it :p This was only last week :)

Finding out about a high level mob in a low lvl mob zone - all too late.
Riding on boat to Mhuara to catch Al Z boat, and pirates attack. So I thought hey, im bored, Ill have some fun.
Buffed up quickly - Proc, Shell, Phalanx, SS.
Chucked a Firaga onto the skeles. Next thing I know I get hit by a Waterga III. Then a few clubs. Then Im dead and devel.
Looked up Silverhook, turns out to be a Lvl 72 NM >< boy I felt stupid.

My PLD friend lagged out during his Maat fight and DC'd.... After getting Maat down to about 10% HP with still 50% of his own HP and MP remaining.
Most Unfortunate Lag Moment Ever. In my opinion...

Nah. The most unfortunate lag moment would be lagging out right after you claim a NM, or after the rarest item ever drops.

Mmmm... yes I suppose so. I still think it was quite unfortunate, it was like his fourth try :(
But yes, lagging out right after Theif's Knife or E Bow or similar dropped would be bad...

I'm no stranger to lag and disconnects (I miss exping ._.). The only one that really stands out in my mind was when I was doing the golden salvage assault with two friends of mine.
I'd go on SMN, and they'd go on their level 70+ jobs and get free AP. In the middle of the true sight fish section, I disconnect and it takes me a while to get back on. When I got back online, I somehow wasn't dead and wasn't currently being eaten alive by a fish.
My friends found out that they can kill the mimics and had killed a few while I was out. I ran past them and found the real chest in one of the deepest spots of that assault. We had about a minute left... My RDM friend's crimson pants pulled through for us and we beat that assault with less than 30 seconds left.
We got our AP and learned from it, so it wasn't exactly "unfortunate". The only real unfortunate lag/disconnects I've had lately either involve not being able to exp or disconnecting during besieged.
Off-topic: I miss all the customizations that we had with the gil system. I stopped playing FFXI (and stopped going here) for a while, then came back and this whole website had changed and I'd usually get error messages when I'd try to do anything on here. It looks like I'm able to do things on here again. >_>a
