Hello everyone,
Whats the history behind the Summons?
Where did they come from? Just wondering because I'm a lv 54 Summoner and I have always loved Summoner but no idea the history of them....
Also another weird thing... How far can a Avatars A.I go? I was in Brenner today with LS and I had Carbuncle out now I was messing with somone in other party we thought we would have a staff dual now she used WS and did abit of damage carbuncle used Healing Ruby even tho I didn't command it why is this? Glitch or are Avatars programed to help there masters....
Anyway
Any info would be great
And good luck Summoners

The History of Vana'diel (http://www.shadow-ffxi.com/HistoryofVanadiel/) has some interesting background on Summoners, specifically in "Darkness Calls" & "The Crystal War". Talks of Fenrir mostly, but gives some interesting background. You can also check out "Artifact Armor" for more info.
Warning on this site, it contains many spoilers on storyline.
I'm not a Summoner, but I remember seeing a few things on that site.

Carbuncle, Phoenix, Bahamut, Fenrir and Diabolos are the 5 Terrestrial Avatars. They are more or less the guardians of Vana'diel and have a huge influence that's revealed throughout CoP.
Then you have the 6 Celestial Avatars that sleep within the Protocrystals. I'm not totally sure on their backgrounds, but they could be interpreted as the physical manifestations and/or guardians of their respective elements. When you fight them, they mention that they live in a world that's neither an instant nor an eternity.... some kind paradox I think, it's a bit weird...
Like the above poster mentioned, the History of Vana'diel outlines everything you'd want to know, but contains a helluva lot of spoilers. I personally find it more fun to find this stuff out through missions and SMN AF.

WOW, that is an incredible source of Vana'Diel lore. People should read the Ramuh article and spot the Aht Urhgan references whilst taking note that the article was written in 2003. Anyone who doesn't think that the entire FFXI world, all of the expansion storylines etc were not planned in advance need to check this.
Great stuff!

{Punctuation} {you can have this}.
I highly recommend checking out the above lore. I remember reading most of that a few years ago, and after i got ToAU, some of it lit up in the back of my head. I'm still curious about Phoenix as i haven't been able to advance the CoP storyline at all. I'm also concerned about what part the Dark Rider (Odin) and Alexander have to play in the storyline.

Of the known schools of magic in the western lands (Windurst, San d'Oria, Bastok, Jeuno, Tavnazia, etc), summoning magic is considered the fourth and forbidden school of magic. The other three accepted schools are the three which open the Three Mage Gate, white magic, black magic, and red magic. The reason for the creation and subsequent banning of summoning magic by Windurst is explained through the course of various missions, which eventually leads up to the reason why Fenrir was unsummonable until just recently and his restoration as a summonable avatar.
There are two types of avatars, Celestial Avatars and Terrestrial Avatars. The Terrestrial Avatars represent the world of Vanadiel and guard, guide, and protect it. Their fate and power is tied directly to this world and if this world dies, so do the Terrestrial Avatars. They are: Carbuncle, Fenrir, Diabolos, Bahamut, and Phoenix. Each has a title and position that the avatar fills, and presumably duties they perform related to their title. (Bahamut the Wyrmking, etc.) Of the five Terrestrial Avatars, three are summonable, one is assumed dead, and the final has been stated by Square-Enix as permanently unsummonable (Bahamut). Carbuncle is the first avatar any summoner obtains because it is through Carbuncle that all modern summoners gain their ability to weild summoning magic. What Carbuncle's motives are for granting this power is anyone's guess, but it seems he wishes to protect Vanadiel and its people by bestowing a fragment of his and the other avatars' power upon the summoners.
The other type are Celestial Avatars. Celestial Avatars are avatars who represent natural primal forces that exist throughout the universe, not just in Vanadiel, and so their fate is not as closely tied to Vanadiel and if our world were to cease to exist, these avatars would not die as long as their element continued to function within the structure of the universe. There is one avatar for each of the primary elements in Vanadiel: Ifrit (fire), Shiva (ice), Garuda (wind), Titan (earth), Ramuh (thunder), Leviathan (water), Odin (dark), and Alexander (light). Of the eight Celestial Avatars, six are summonable, which are the standard elements (fire, ice, wind, water, earth, thunder). At the current time Light (Alexander) and Dark (Odin) are not obtainable because the ancient western civilizations never apparently created a protocrystal for them, or their protocrystals were destroyed, or they lie elsewhere in the world outside the western continents. Current speculation is that Odin and Alexander are closely tied to the ToAU storyline and that one or both may become summonable some time in the future just as Diabolos became summonable through the course of CoP. Because of the possible scope, size, and nature of Alexander, it seems most likely that Odin will be summonable, whereas Alexander will not.
As for Phoenix and Bahamut, Square has stated that Bahamut will never be summonable by players. You can try to take up this issue with them if you want, but I'm sure efforts to sway them will be met with futility. Phoenix, on the other hand, has great potential as a future summon for any Far East expansion they may release after ToAU is finished. The "why" of this will become clear to you as you play through the CoP storyline, but essentially Phoenix is tied directly to the Far East (Aht Urghan is the Near East), and as the avatar of life and resurrection, well, you can fill in those blanks yourself.

Rumor goes the dark Protocrystal was located in Bearclaw Pinnacle (Uleguarand Range) but was destroyed.
There is a thread around here with the spoiler from CoP which reveals a bit of that in the storyline but I don't know where exactly.
