View Full Version : Trouble breaking chain #3

I seem to usually get on a good killing streak and get chain #3s, but can't seem to go beyond them as either /WHM or /NIN. I'm currently 47 in Gustav and I'll get a good set of kills and try to get chain #4 and combat by the same means as before, but never seem to achieve that high a chain.

I typically start out a fight casting Dia after my pet lands the first hit, then I let the pet wear the mob down to about 75-80 percent HP before engaging myself. I usually rest for a little MP in that window or scan around for the next potential pet.

I wouldn't say I have amazing gear at the moment, but I don't feel too lacking for damage or accuracy, considering most of what I do fight are T mobs.

There are some areas where it is quite normal to break through a certain chain due to the way the monsters behave or the availability of pets or the type of monsters.

I doubt it's your lack of good gear. Chain #3 is infact rather good. I don't think I've ever gotten past Chain #4. Best to be safe rather than try to take on a monster for Chain #4 at yellow HP. Also, the times I did get past chain #4 was when monsters suicide. If you wonder about gear, I went from:

Hume Initial Gear -> Bone Gear (replaced body with Chessboard at 45) -> AF to 75.
Bronze Axe -> Republic Axe -> De Saintre's -> Viking(x2) -> (70+): Rune Axe x2 in ToA areas (no Gaudy Harness) and a Martial Axe.

All standard equip for the other slots, ribbion, whistle, 2 hope rings and a corsette. Nothing ground breaking at all. And a Balance Buckler to 75 for the times I sub RDM.

You're doing nothing wrong in the way you're fighting. It's just the monster doesn't do enough to deal damage fast enough for chain #4. That or the environment wasn't as suitable (aggro and such), so not as much free room to move around.

Chain #3 is actually quite good; that's actually what I shoot for. Sometimes I get lucky and land a chain #4 or unlucky and miss chain #2 :P.

Only have a handful of chain #5's, but that's because of a lucky string of mob suicides (Gobs or Bombs). However, there are those times where I'll have to kill off bombs or gobs ><, so there's a gamble with those :).

Another good type of mob to fight is worms. Did worms at night in West Altepa in the early 40's, and I could consistently Chain #4 on those.

Not there yet, but I hear high chains are possible in ToAU; /cheer low def mobs :D.

I think it's just your camp. I did Gustav from 46 to 47. The only safe camp is a spot with 2 Pugils, 2 Lizards, and some bats. Meanwhile, the best pets are Leeches, which are all located in areas where Gobs roam. So you're either forced to use the lesser pets at your camp, or drag the fight out into aggro spots so you can leave your EM pet leeches without them despawning. On top of that, 25% of your prey will respawn as DCs, which can slow down chaining.

Between spots like Gustav, Onzozo and West Altepa, you'll just have to slog through slow exp until around 49 or 50. I went to Crawler's Nest at 50, and it was the best exp I had seen since Yhoator Jungle (having Gaudy Harness probably helped).

I'd say chain #3 is good too.
The time I got chain #4 or even #5 is when I was lucky with the gob doing suicide bomb and the robot exploding its own.
I would be happy with chain #3.

I think I got chain #4s here and there in the donut room of Crawler's Nest. But that place is so chock full of useable pets and chainable prey that it's awesome. Well, until an NPC leveler comes along, that is.

Edit: the exp chain timer goes up at lvl 50, so maybe it's unfair to compare 50+ exp'ing to lvl 47.

its not easy to break chain 3 on non-suicidal mobs when you are solo. only bombs and goblin pets will allow you to break chain 3 regularly. chain 3 is pretty nice tbh :)

chain# is pretty good, only times i got chain#4 pre BST50 was at Riverne site.
got chain#4 on bats and beetles in Garlaige citadel(sp?) pretty constant when there is no parties or at least one party ^^;

I typically start out a fight casting Dia after my pet lands the first hit, then I let the pet wear the mob down to about 75-80 percent HP before engaging myself. I usually rest for a little MP in that window or scan around for the next potential pet.
well, i cast Dia and engage when the mob reach 90%HP (85% if i'm /NIN).

In my late 30s/early 40s I found that my Pet just tanked fights better if I let it work down the mob a bit first. 90 percent wasn't enough since my damage would eventually catch up to quickly and I'd get hate, so I wait til about 80 percent. I usually catch up and wear the mob down before the pet is at low HP.

I got chain #4 pretty consistently in Bostaunieux Oubliette, doing Slimes vs Bats. But then, Slime pets just kick serious butt.

I <3 Bostaunieux.

For normal exp purposes do you typically use jug pets or whatever is around? Sorry for the newb question but I've never played BST and was looking into playing one maybe.

The only time I used jug pet was under an emergency cases:
1) The pet dies but there's nothing near to charm and don't have time to look for one.
2) The pet dies and there are mobs I can charm but is risky (3 pugils together that would link if I miss charm).
3) Get aggro by something I can't charm (like beastman) and there is nothing near that I can charm. I'd call jug pet, let it attack, and then log out at near safe place.

Jug pet is weak compared to regular monsters.
I'd say it's stronger than easy prey, but weaker than decent match.
It depends on what monster against what jug pet, but that's how I look at it.

When you say Bone Gear you mean Bone set > Beetle set?

When you say Bone Gear you mean Bone set > Beetle set?

Nope, I literally meant what I said. Just the Bone+1 set and then moved onto a Brigadine at level 45 and then to AF. I felt too cheap to upgrade at all, if anything. Where possible I replaced gloves with Battle Gloves and I think at 49 I managed to claim Leaping Lizzy. I had my Hume RSE but I didn't use any of the pieces in the end.:)

Wanna hit chain 4 you have to push the envelope. But in doing so your gonna actually do more harm then good. No rest, meleeing early, Alot of problems can arise... Try setting up your mob order EM >T > T >EM or something like that.

Just remember dont be greedy. Thats the root of alot of my exp deaths. Cause i tried to get that extra chain an was careless. Usually ened up dead, Be happy with #3 an keep aiming for it..
