so i've been fussing with my new computer for this past week and no matter what I try, I can't get FFXI to run. I can get as far as the game start screen (where you select character, delete character, etc), but the moment I try to select character, I get a crash to desktop with the following error:

AppName: pol.exe AppVer: 1.17.4.0 ModName: ffximain.dll
ModVer: 3.0.0.0 Offset: 001234df
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/45/polerror0wu.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

could someone post an MD5 checksum of their ffximain.dll file so i can compare to mine? it'll probably be the same, but i'm at wit's end trying to figure out what is wrong.

I can play BF2142 just fine on this computer, but it's just FFXI and L2 that keep crashing. i've tried prime95 testing (passed), memtest (passed), reinstalling DX9 (dec '06 update), using an older video card (geforce 4 and radeon 9600). all have the same problem

current system is biostar NF2 w/ geforce 6800GS, 768 MB ram (single channel), mobile athlon xp 2400

thanks in advance for the help

rargh! damn this stupid install!

so it's probably not my memory, probably not my CPU, probably not windows updates, probably not my graphics card or drivers, probably not the nforce 2 drivers and probably not DX9. anything left to check? :wasted:

Are you running it under application compatibility?

nope

though there is one bit of info that I gleamed from my experience, how to quickly restore a FFXI install:
1. backup registry for Local Machine->Software->PlayOnlineUS
2. move old Playonline, TetraMaster and FFXI folders to another directory
3. install playonline, tetramaster and ffxi (note: don't need to install expansions) from CD/DVD
4. restore registry setting you saved
5. copy old Playonline, TetraMaster and FFXI folders over and replace new one
5a. for even a quicker step, rename new Playonline, TetraMaster and FFXI folders to something else and move the old folders into the SquareEnix directory (only works if old and new are on same drive).
6. play game and it should start without needing to check the files again (saves 30-45 minutes). don't know if anything in-game is affected by this as I am unable to get in game

winxp sp2... you dont really need to have application compatibility set with xp. only place ive had to set that is on vista on my box at home.

but yea, copying over a previous install works too, its what i had to do to get my vista run ffxi to work. @_@

winxp sp2... you dont really need to have application compatibility set with xp. I know, thats why I asked. Looking at the image of the error report summery, the log file attached is xxxx_appcompat.txt which looked like it was being run under Application Compatibility.

lesson learned:
sometimes when you take shortcuts, you get lost ^^;

the problem ended up being the short cut i took of copying the SquareEnix folder to save time on reinstall. i just let the fresh install download all the updates from scratch and it worked without a hitch.

go figure lol

Im having the same issue. Is it just a reinstall thats required or a complete file check on the patch/update? My install was a fresh one off the discs, with the regular method of patch updating.

Necro thread, but I will respond.
The problem that he was having is that he pulled old data from a previous install into his POL directory. That allows you to cut down a lot on your install time, however the files won't be correct. You'd still have to scan all your files, (over 10,000 of them) and verify that they are correct. It's easier to just have them scan & download normally instead of trying to use a "short cut".

The only thing you really need to save from your old pol directory is the USERS folder. Maybe the Screenshot folder as well if you took screen shots from inside FFXI using their interface (print screen).

Go with File Check. Don't need a fresh install, however you will lose all CUSTOMIZATION that you did, Brandson, avatar .dat edits, etc.

speaking of user stuff, does anyone know where your macros are stored?

i really want to back up some macros so i dont have to recreated the 23049823 rng macros i already have. why do i have 23049823 rng macros?

i got creative and made macros for all the different types of status bolts you can use. i can switch btwn any bolt on the fly. that and having 3 subs for rng needs some spots too.

PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\USER\<blahblahblah directory>

or if you https://secure.playonline.com/polapps/s/s.kb.html.Qa?ZUID=3&polg_loc=en&id=2527&qs=id%3D0%26c1%3D0%26c2%3D0%26k%3Dmacro%26s%3D0%26 o%3D10%26term%3D0%26caseNum%3D10%26polg_loc%3Den
it'll be in your PlayOnline\SquareEnix\PlayOnlineViewer\pub\home01\ open\ContentsData\FinalFantasyXI directory

FINAL FANTASY XI\USER\'s contents (http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/game-setup-tweeking-optimizing-q/64584-final-fantasy-xi-user-s-contents.html)

That's about everything I know. >_>;

your macro location depends on your characters. The easiest way to find out your exact file paths is POL Utils, or if you're ghetto, Vana'hand.
