Limit Break 1 is really breaking me

Ok so I was a 50RDM. Finally managed to get most of my Elementak Staves so thought Id hit 51 at least so I could start using them, if ever i jumped onto my RDM main while lvling subs.

LS has no 75's (highest is currently 66 I think). So I shouted in Jeuno foe help.

Luckily for me, a 75THF/NIN answered and we struck a deal of 25k per item, starting with the hardest (Papyrus).

So off we went to The Eldieme Necropolis.

He thought with TH2, max 2 hrs to get it.

4 Hours later, 5 deaths for me later, a dlvl, numerous bone chips and 3 chest keys later...no Papyrus.

I died numrous times. Tried to keep sneak up, but it always wore at the awkwardest of times. 2 deaths were due to sneak wearing in one of those awkward times, 2 were from -aga spells stripping my sneak and the other mobs aggroing and 1 was from a freak Freeze that got casted on me. 1 shotted me.

So what am I to do? Should I keeo going back to jeuno and shouting for help? Or is any kind soul on Bahamut going to get me through this "rite of passage" !!!

I now need to solo 2k ish to get me back to 50...no point in partying in for that xp. I was only 3k to 51 when I started this ><

Last night when you talked to me, I was in the middle of a totally crazy merit party, couldn't focus on anything but it - rdm main healing a thickets merit party - insanity.

Tonight, assuming nothing turns up with the ls (just joined a new one, so that is my primary focus), let me know, I'll give it a go, at least get some of it done. We can go for the others first, then it will feel like you are achieving something!

You're on a different server so I can't help, but just some advice. If you have a level 75 helping, there's no need to tag along with them, you can just hang out at the entrance and let them come back to you once every loop around the lich spawns and heal them (or not even that if they can heal themselves). You don't need to be near them to lot the items when they drop.

Yeah I was going ask but I didnt want to bother you out of a merit party!

I suppose a lot is to do with luck. But yes even if we could do the bomb coal and Exoray Mold would be great. I didnt want to do those first with proper Hired Help as I think it would have given him the chance to just go for the first 2 as an easy 50k then make his excuses. So I set the terms as the hardest one first.

Luckily also said, no item no gill. So whilst I was up till 2:30am dying a lot at least I didnt have to pay anything. Yes I felt guilty that he didnt get the drop hence no gill but hey.

Looks like Ima be at work late again tonight, but I should be on by about 7:30.

What happened to that LS you got made leader of?

Yeah I ended up doing that in the end. But this guy was getting aggro from resting for HP so I tagged along to buff and heal some, thought it would be easy to just keep sneak up and keep out of the way. Obviously not lol. Just wanted to speed up the process.

BTW, did anyone teach you that you can start casting a new sneak on yourself, then cancel the existing one (which is wearing off soon) while the spell is still in progress?

It takes some practice, and the timing is tight for RDM (especially later on, when you get more Fast Cast). It's a pain, but this technique pretty darn handy. If you can get any sort of space at all between you and monsters before sneak completely wears off, you should be able to reapply it without getting yourself killed.

In really tight spots, especially where there are magic aggros, you may want to macro Silent Oil for untimely sneak problems; those little vials seem to activate almost instantaneously.

Believer of Stacking TH2: Get multiple THF's; they just have to be in party/alliance, and in the zone. Supposedly.
Believer of the Moon: Full Moon = more loot. 100% is your best bet.
Believer of the Day: Match crystal drop from monster to the day of the week. Monsters are stronger, but so are the drops. Lich drops... Earth Crystal?!
Believer of the Plan: Ask everyone days in advance, and set up a proper event with exact date and time. Also consult lokyst's FFXI Craft Timer (http://ffxi.lokyst.net/timer/crafttimer.html) to figure out when it'd be full moon and earth day.

Yes, Id imagine that back in the day 75's were not easily readily avilable they would have to band together to kill these things. If I had the patience and confidence that people would come along Id set one up!!

Believer of Moon/Day etc...dont know. Never had the patience or really even thought about it enough to time anything around it. Although next time I get a good drop, Ill make a point to check the phase and day...see if it correlates.

Now, on the note of cancelling Sneak/Invis while casting. No, I havent been taught that.

I'm on a PC, and I think (?) it has to do something with selecting the buff icon up the top? I have only ever done this a few times, yet always by accident so I couldnt recreate it :p

Um... yeah, select the icon on top, and cancel it. Don't how other PC players do it--I use a USB controller do that. Try the + key on the numeric pad or something?!

(I think I had Sneak for half a year before someone finally taught me to cancel it so it can be reapplied. <_< Quite a few months after that, someone else noticed that I was a fool, and told me I don't have to cancel Invisible to reapply it... >_<; )

Ok, 7.30, I should know what I am doing by then. I'm supposed to be doing assaults tonight, but not sure when, and I think I am supposed to be soloing Shadowlord for someone else... but we can fit a couple of hours in if nothing else.

And the papyrus sucks.

For what it's worth, the Papy will drop very early sometimes. I was farming one for my wife and got it on the 6th Lich. Then got another about 2 hrs later for some strangers who were farming it too. No TH on either one.

Four hours with TH2 seems like a long time - was the Thief targeting the right mobs or was he just killing every skele he ran across?

For canceling Sneak (or any cancelable buff) with a keyboard hit the + key on the numpad twice. That will give a highlight box up on your buff/debuff icon line. Move the highlight over to Sneak, hit Enter and voila no more Sneak. Just be careful cause it's easy to highlight something you don't want to remove, like Protect (some things are safe from being removed this way though like Signet and Food).

I forget if this works or not but I think you can set your highlight on Sneak, then type /ma Sneak <me>, hit Enter to cast the spell, then enter again to cancel the existing Sneak.

The THF was indeed hitting Lichs, only doing Fallen Knights if they aggroed for whatever reason.

I did most of G1 just as a group effort between other level 50s who also needed the items. The only exception was Papyrus, where we had a high level WAR or DRK (not sure which) helping about 5 of us.

The key to Papyrus is picking a safe camp. I can understand sneak wearing off at awkward times while you were still making your way to a camp. But it getting stripped off by a -ga spell, and causing other mobs to aggro you? Sounds like either you guys picked a poor camp, or didn't try to camp anywhere at all and simply roamed around.

If you travel through Beaucedine Glacier to get to the remote part of Eldieme Necropolic, you can camp right inside the entrace. A player in the mid 60s can move around without aggro and get to enough Lich spawns. None of the Skeleton mobs in Eldieme link, so it's easy for a higher level player to pull a Lich all the way to camp without bringing back more than you can handle.

A few tips for future reference.

Just don't go where the THF is. A 75 THF/NIN should be able to solo easily without taking that many hits. Only run down to cure him here and there. Putting yourself anywhere in AoE range of a casting mob while surrounded by mobs that aggro to yellow HP is a very bad idea. Next time just stay at the entrance. Personally sounds to me like your mercenary sucked. A 75 THF should be able to fight for quite a while without any shadows and still not get hit by those Liches. If he was resting in range of low HP aggro, then that was his mistake and it would only require you running down a few times to heal.

Also, something that only comes with experience is realizing that the aggro range for sound is very very short. You can almost always find a little corner to recast in. Howevewr, the aggro to blood is huge so the AoE thing still stands.

For any quest that requires the collecting of items there is no reason to worry about being at the level of the quest to start. Considering you likely had it flagged before deleveling it doesn't matter. But even if you didn't have it flagged before deleveling it doesn't matter. There's no point and no need to wait for that level before collecting said items. I have the subligars for JSE for about 5 jobs that I've yet to level to 50, but when I get there, I won't have to shout for a subligar hunt PT.

Also, there would've been no reason to solo back to 50. You can get a PT and XP to within 1 XP of 51. Most PTs wouldn't have lasted that long anyway and you would be able to contribute at least 2-3 hours before running into capped XP.


I swear you don't need TH2 for Paper as much as you need luck. A 75 MNK/WAR got 2 papers in 6 kills for me and my wife back in the day.

I wish you the best of luck. I know things can feel stagnant when you're waiting on a limit break to happen.

The THF at one point went down to 1hp and I I could see in the logs him spamming his Utsu:Ni macro lol. I was running to cure him from my HP in jeuno but the whole door system in there got me stuck.

And the problem with the camp as mentioned earlier is we were roaming, and the lichs normally were in a small square room by the moving doors. So I had to stand inside the doors to make sure we didnt get seperated etc...which brought me in range of everything.

Well, I know better now. Tonight Ill solo seeming as Kirsteena is good enough to help me out, no point lfp and then bailing 10 mins into a party. But I can see your point, i still need 6k ish i think to reach 51 so a 2-3hr party would still be good.

I can see challenges coming now where I am going to need more and more high lvl help, but my LS hasnt got them. Great LS and all, helps with everything else and are a great bunch. But if I find another LS with more high lvl available, Id be taking the cookie by logging into it just to ask for help. lol what to do.

It'll be alright for the new guys in our LS, by the time they get to this stage I'll be able to help.

Thf loses a lot of power against skeleies so it's no surprise he had a lot of trouble. And even with TH2, the papy can take a LONG time to drop. Though honestly, a group of 50s and 60s shouldn't have too much trouble with them and should have a bit more fun then just sitting and waiting at that too.

I wish I was on your server so that I could help you. With as much help as I've gotten in this game I love doing things for other people when I can. And I never charge to come help people either. My 75sam friend use to do runs like this all the time, but no being /nin hurt him bad, so I'd bring out my 75whm and hit on the skellys for a while.

This is just my opinion, but usually mages are a lot more helpful for free services in this game, or at least appears that way to me. Takes us longer to kill things, but we so rarly get to take out our clubs, staves and scythes that we actually enjoy the hours and hours of pwning too weak mobs. For liches a whm/nin with hexa can actually kill pretty fast and effective in the necropolis. I hope you find your help tonight and not get discouraged trying for the paper. ^^

Really a shame how many people will do nothing for anybody without gil, you know at some point someone helped them, would be nice to return the favor.

Maybe it's servers, or maybe I was just lucky. I met a 75whm,rdm,brd my 3rd day in game, and started chatting to her, and we struck up a friendship.

She ended up taking me to the dunes that night, as well as getting me all my subjob items. After that she's helped me with rank5, LB1, 2, and a number of other things, as well as all the information I could want. I've never asked for gil, and she would never except gil from me, just ppl bored that decide to help out other players, and those are the type of people I enjoy. Well from what I've read of kristeena's post on these forums, I'm sure you've found someone like my buddy.

btw, Papyrus is going to be rough to get one way or another. But you can probably get the other two items by befriending random BSTs who are leveling in Garlaige and Crawlers Nest.

Explosure is a very popular leveling mob for BSTs 50-53. So if you do a /search of Garlaige for BSTs in that level range, chances are, you can talk them into getting an easy Bomb Coal from them (it drops at least 50% of the time, so you wouldn't even have to wait long).

Exoray Mold is a slower drop, but many BSTs will level on Exorays around the same level range as Explosures in Garlaige. I solo'ed in the "donut room" from 51 to 53, and got at least 2 Molds to drop during that time.

You won't even need to be in a party with those BSTs when the item drops. If the BST doesn't know about this trick, tell them that by keeping their inventory "full", loot will stay in their party chest until there's room. They can achieve this by unstacking things like crystals, pet food, or other stacked items.

G-1 oh my!!! this is where most people quit the game. cant imagine why. when i did this this there wernt many people in the 70+ range. we had to do this as a full party. papyrus took me 2 mos to catch a party in eldiemme, with a couple of ls members in it, and ask if by chance they got any drops. i was standing outside asking passer bys for help, when i got a tell from a party that paper had dropped and to zone in and join quickly. now that im lvl 75 i probaly do this 3 or 4 times every month for random shouts. never takes more than a couple of hours. i also usualy ask the person im helping to stay at the entrance. if they do stay with me we pull the lichs out of their rooms.
bomb coal is easy, i had a lvl 59 rdm solo it for me. these are quit easy for a drk to solo as well.
mold usually isnt to bad, if your lucky you should have an exp party killing exorays in the mid 40s and get your mold. mold or paper either one should take more than 2 hours except for a very rare occasion. i think its sad that you have to pay someone for help for this. i cant do this for every level 50 but i dont mind helping when i can for free. btw if you think this was a pain....... =)

Couple of notes:

(1) You can get Ancient Papyrus from the Liches in the back part of Toraimarai Canal if you know where to find them (not many people do, but this is a viable option, and somewhat less dangerous than trekking through Eldieme Necropolis). Any level 65+ Beastmaster should be able to solo these with ridiculous ease (as opposed to Eldieme where they have nothing to charm). Any 75 can also beat them, and there's less chance of blood aggro if you know where to go. Yes, I know Somepage, MysteryTour, and FFXIclopedia say only the ones in Eldieme can drop it. They are all wrong (I've gotten papyrus by accident in there before).

(2) Absolute best place to track down Liches in Eldieme Necropolis is from the entrance via the plateau/Beaucedine Glacier side of Batallia Downs. There is a pair of Liches in a set of four small rooms set off the main hallway near the entrance. Further in there is a pair of large rooms there with two Liches each, with a tunnel in between where it is relatively safe to fight and not get blood aggro. The foot travel to get here can be very difficult, however unless you either have the ability to outpost to Beaucedine Glacier or Xarcabard, or have access to Teleport-Vahzl.

I played through this phase of the game. :P There were many nights when we'd see multiple groups in Eldieme trying to get ancient papyrus and fighting for spawns. Ditto for Crawlers' Nest for exoray mold.

Yeah. The first time I did LB1 I did it in a party of level 50s. We were one of four parties in Eldieme that week (yes week), and while it was fun, I wouldn't want to have to do it that way again.

I once wrote a rant about the stupid things people do in papyrus parties (primarily, going in from the Jeuno side in the first place, but there's also the usual blood aggro stupidity etc.) Ah, those were the days.

I kind of miss the time when there were enough people who needed it that my LS would do it as an event, though (with a detour to the Vahzl telepoint for people that didn't have the crystal, too). Now it's just "find 1-2 people, run through ranguemont and beaucedine, kill some liches". The ratio of travel time to killing time makes it seem like a waste to go up there - but it isn't, as you'll quickly discover if you try to do it from the jeuno side and get 2-3 other monsters for every lich (sometimes as midfight pop-aggros, there are hardly any truly safe camps in the lower part of Eldieme).

For anyone reading this thread that hasn't got papyrus yet - I recommend the tunnel at D-6 in the part of Eldieme reached through Beaucedine. It takes a little while to get to, but once you're there you can pull practically nothing but liches with no chance of aggro while you're fighting (as long as you are properly positioned). More liches, less aggro = win.

BTW - OP is a RDM. If he has trouble traveling without aggro - when he has a guide with a map! - he doesn't deserve to be level 51. XD

Yeah I couldnt believe it...4hrs with mr THF and his stupid TH2, with nothing more than a stack of bone chips to show. 1 1/2 hrs (?) with Kirst and Murphie and I get Bomb Coal 1/1, Mold 1/4, and Papyrus 1/2. Didnt even lose enough HP to go yellow.

And they got me the Vhazl crystal.

What can I say? I wish there were more people like this in the game. (or maybe not too mamy coz then I would get too lazy)

NM hunt tonight, then start partying RDM again at the weekend. Should be 51+ in no time!!

Some friends helped me get my items, pld, thf, blm, and me, other members kinda came and went.

We go to the Crawler's Nest and the third Exoray we kill drops the mold. I lot on it and everyone but a blm who shall go nameless passes on it. He thought he had passed it, but I guess he didn't because it didn't go to me and he casted Escape ; ;

.5 seconds before Escape went off he suddenly realised and tried running around (didn't have time to switch gear) but to no avail ; ;

4 hours later I regain my mold :P
