View Full Version : Will there ever be another Size 5 Shield?

I have never owned an Aegis or seen one in action but if it blocks like a 1 and protects like a 4 then this would be great to have. Unfortunatly I hear that in order to get this shield then you have spend a lot of time trying to upgrade it and that is something I don't really have. For me it seems like this shield will be out of my reach.

So I am asking if you would ever add anymore size 5 shields to FFXI. They wouldn't have to be as godly as the Aegis but could be gained through an easier method such as crafting, BCNM or questing. For Paladins this would greatly benefit us by giving us more damage mitigation. They could start showing up around level 70, have typical defense of the shields around those levels and have a few extra stats for tanking.

If they add size 5 shields they won't block like a 1 and protect like a 4, that will remain Aegis-exclusive. All relics have a low delay(or in this case, high proc) and high damage(or in this case, damage migitation). Relic Weapons/Shield are exclusive in that they have rediciously low delay as well as high damage, and they simply modified Aegis to fit this. I highly doubt they would add another aegis, but they may add really, really big shields that block like a 3 and protect like a 5 mabye.

the stats on Aegis aren't what make it good... just like the weapon skills and acc or attack +20 isn't what makes the relic weapons good. It's the unseen game mechanics that make them brutal. In this case, it is the size 5-ness that makes Aegis so good. The damage mitigation potential competes with shadows. Except you're actually still getting hit so you at least have a chance to generate hate. And you get to sub War.

Incredibly low damage taken + provoke. That's about what it amounts to (or so I'd gather, I've never actually seen one in action. Our server got Excaliburs).

I have seen one, and the main things that stand out to me are the -25% magic damage and the insane Shield Bashes (200+ damage consistently). But I haven't analyzed the blocking in detail because I often have something else to pay attention to. :)

It isn't the incredibly hard NMs that bother me about relic weapon upgrading, but the 200-300 million gil worth of dynamis money. I don't have the first clue where to go about getting that much money; I couldn't afford to continue my current endgame activities without selling most of the dynamis money I got as drops (well, I suppose I could sell my ancient beastcoins instead, but that's not a very attractive prospect), and to even think about upgrading I'd have to not only not sell that but buy at least 10-20 times as much - and even then I'd be looking at a time scale of years to upgrade.
