FFXIClopedia has some data on max ranges, but they don't say what mob it's against, and the data is incomplete.

I went out and tested this (vs. worms) in Altepa/Korroloka/Gustaberg. I'd find a worm on level ground (or as close as possible) then attempt the given action until 0.1 more distance away would make the action fail. The listed distances are the maximum ranges at which the actions worked.

melee- 3.6
melee WS- 4.6
normal ranged WS- 15.7
Shadowbind/Quick Draw/Provoke- 17.4
Detonator- 17.6
ranged attack- 24.9

I love using distance now to gauge things. I think that despite how some mobs might be physically larger than others, everything distance related is relative:

Like how the Wyrms are huge, but that doesn't mean a RNG should stand in the 13-15 range for Bow as opposed to the 9-10.

Speaking of which... What the hell is that ranged attack optimal distance?

Guns are right outside melee range, so I'm guessing 4-6
Crossbow I'm guessing 6-9
Bow I'm guessing 8ish-10

I haven't exped on RNG that much ever since using the distance plugin... So I'm not able to tell for sure.

Yeah, I've kinda found that out sweets spots vary per mob. Just as an aside, in my BST levelling, i've found the hate radius (basically a point you cross where you can't generate enmity for an action like Divine Seal/Cure) also varies with mob size.

It might be useful for small mobs or beastmen mobs, but its going to superflous data for things like Dhamels, Treants, Antlions, HNMs, Wyrms and other large mobs. This all assuming that you're using a crutch like windower. Even if you're not, its still going to be superfluous data since you'll have to get a feel for it anyway.

Wishmaster, actually, they changed it, so sweet spot for all of them is just outside melee range.
If thats not true, then I've never been able to notice a difference once I'm outside melee range. In fact, if I'm eating atk food, I sometimes can't notice a difference even if I'm inside melee range.

Shadowbind/Quick Draw/Provoke- 17.4

Myth busted for "Shadowbind is better than provoke because it's ranged attack"

I exped on RNG for 2 hours and I got the weirdest ass results. I can't explain them, but pretty much....

Yeah, what Caspian said. I plan on playing again while I'm at work, so I'll get back to you all then.

I thought Provoke was 16.8 and Quick Draw was 25....

And for the record, my data has Chi Blast being at 20.

well... pre-unseminerf (or post nerf, whoever you want to view that era) i usually saw best results at these distances:
gun: 5.5-6.5
xbow 7.5-8.5
bow: 11.5-12.5
now that they adjusted it, its a bit more tolerant so varying +/- 1 on the max and min didnt make me notice any uncharacteristic changes.
however, on larger mobs (ie: dhamels) for bow, i was standing at 14-15ish to get the same numbers i would on say a goblin in bibiki bay.

these distances still hold true? is this for rng only or for the weapon in general?

The adjustments to ranged weapons affected all ranged weapons, not just the ones RNG used. It just affects RNGs the most because its thier primary source of DD.
