I have been trying to patch this game for about 6hours and have searched high and low for guides.

I can't install final fantasy, well I Install it but on play online file checker it dosn't show the game even though i have installed it.
==== ATTEMPTED SOLUTIONS====
i have enabled uPnP in network connections.
I have disconnected my router and directly connected into my cable modem.
my internet is NOT disconnecting randomly.
I just installed this game along with the expansion packs today following the instructions listed in the supplied manual.
http://www.nuxted.com/bacha/ss.jpg
i cant seem to get play online to recognize the install even though this is a BRAND NEW CD (bought it Monday night) I have installed other DVD ROM Based Games on this computer, Even when i ignore this and try to patch i get a 1153 or 1163 error.
Solutions tried:
Disabling firewall/anti-virus
Installing all the expansions in order of releasement.
Installing ONLY final fantasy 11.
Defragmenting my Hard Drive with Perfect Disk 8 then Windows Defragmenter.
Connecting directly through my Modem bypassing my router.
Tried using a different router.

I have Windows XP Pro SP2 with the latest updates.
AMD X2 4400+
nVidia GeForce 7800 GT
1gig of ram
160 gig SATA Seagate HD

TraceRT To Japan Servers, (First ping was random, then while my FF11 Download "Failure Notice" i pinged the server, making sure my internet was still active)

There's some advice regarding this in this thread:
http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/game-setup-tweeking-optimizing-q/63035-pol-error-1153-a.html

Do you have Windows Firewall enabled for some reason?

Perhaps try running a traceroute to the Playonline servers to see if there's an internet hiccup somewhere down the line that's causing instability for you? That's really the only other major possibility that occurs to me.

Definitely sounds like a corrupted installation. This might have happened due to the constant failed updates, but also might have been a glitch when first installed too.

I would still do the traceroute just to make sure your connection to Japan is clear though:

Start > Run > cmd

In the black window prompt, type:

tracert www.playonline.com*

This will initiate a traceroute attempt, which tries to track data from your system to the target, and tries to report on the status of each computer it passes through on the way. What you're looking for are entries that time out, or have a latency greater than around 250ms - this would indicate and unstable connection, and would explain your occasional connection drops.

If the traceroute comes up clean, then I'd recommend reinstalling and hoping for the best. It shouldn't thke long to do the update if you're using the Vana'diel Collection 2007 since it's very close content-wise to the current version.

* NOTE: www.playonline.com isn't the actual update server, but I can't find the exact IP for it at the moment. It's in the same general IP range as the PlayOnline site though, so a traceroute there should show the same symptoms, if any.

from your (post) history, it sounds like you might have uninstalled FFXI a couple of times and probably got the registry confused.

try this:
(uninstall ffxi if it hasn't already been)
uninstall pol and tetramaster
reboot
go into regedit and remove entries you find for SquareEnix
install pol and tetramaster
update those
install ffxi
see if pol sees it now in check files
continue to install the expansions in the order of release (zilart, cop, toa)
update ffxi

Don't you have the disks?

How I read your above statement is that you are downloading the game then updating it from that. Are you using the original disks first? then updating via the web or are you actually downloading the game, installing it then updating it?

The other thing is did you buy the game from a shop? or buy it online second hand if its the latter you could have dodgy codes.

It's not his registration codes - he isn't even getting far enough in to register.

Definitely sounds like a registry problem, though I have no idea what might cause something like this. He's not virused or registry-blocked or firewalled.

Traceroute looks clean. Ping looks clean.

I'd go with what Jarre asked: Are you using the original disks? What are you downloading - the client? If so (leaving aside issues of legality of such for a moment), you'll still need registration codes, so having the software doesn't do you any good without a set of registration codes (which only come with a purchased copy - and I strongly recommend buying new, as used codes won't work).

I'm assuming he DOES have the original discs by what he's said here. This just sounds bizarre. I also think it may have something to do with the registry.

when i do a full install i do the following (I don't have tetra master installed as I don't play it, i also have the 5 CD Uk edition of FF with ROZ and COP and the DVD of TOAU)

Install CD's in order.. i.e. Playonline+ffxi disks, ROZ and COP and TOAU.

Then register all the expansions etc with your card content ID.

Now do the update (it will update Playonline first then the long file check and update of FFXI your looking at approx 3 hours to do this)

I have had no problems doing it this way. Assuming you have all the correct GENUINE disks to install it and a genuine regristration code.

I'm not sure on the registry as he has said he reformatted, so officially the registry should be clear in FF terms, unless he ghosted his HD before the format and stuck the image back on.

One afterthought....

Once you have installed all the disks have you done a file check to see if any files are corrupt (due to a corrupt file on the disk, it can happen!) (assuming you can get to the file check stage)

I'm guessing he tried that also.

I don't think this is happening, or if it is, it's not the sole cause. He can't even get FFXI to appear on the file check menu (see his posted screenshot), which suggests it isn't being registered correctly.

I really think he needs to talk to PlayOnline Support and open a ticket with them.
