Ok, it's late night but some unfriendly encounters in the netty caverns of Crawlers Nest has got me rather upset.
Do I come off as an ass to you?
According to a source that shall remain unidentified apparently most players that encounter me do.
I find this strange how this person who's done little with me in game in person can make this judgment of me out of three things.
1. What I say in shouts.
2. What I say in forums. (Hi!)
3. What this person has 'heard form others'.
It gets to me, it seriously gets to me when near-strangers can get this totally insulting opinion of you before they even do an encounter person to person.
And then expect you not to be pissed about it when regarded rudely.
Backstory:
I'm farming Lizards in Crawlers next, in the main room for lizard items. I figure seeming most parties that exp there find them a dangerous nuisance seeming if you miss-target one, you're likely to link four or so on your party, which spells death for a group without a plvl. Not to mention the lizards there drop like crazy, allowing me to make for small amounts of gil quickly. Not very good farming, but not heavy competition either and it allows me to help out a party in need if I spot one.
So I buff up, enthunder, icespikes, phalanx, stoneskin prot3, shell3, refresh, summon my NPC (Raka. She levels rather nicely while I farm.) As I do so I look down to see the groups there. There's no lizards in blue names seen, but a couple are missing from the batch. Ok, so these guys are having a little bit of lizard trouble. I can remove them of that.
A quick dia, a run around the main room, and I drag the unwanted lizards off down the hallway next to the exit area so I can kill them without lagging down the expers in the main room. Goodness knows I hated that when I was exping.
Unfortunatly as I used AoE Diaga and Circle blade to wittle down the lizards a bit more, I caught a couple crawlers who had wandered in behind my screen. As I saw a thf walk past me looking for crawlers, seing the two glued to me, and running away, I was expecting to get a tell about me 'framing crawlers' in an exp zone. But the tell I got was not form the person who was pulling from a party.
It was from one of a pair of bsts on the opposite side of the main room, who were charming lizards and pulling them into the scorpion room for duoing exp.
Now granted, it's a couple of bsts looking around for some exp. Frankly though, I'm down on my luck for gil, and I don't see their names tatooed to the lizard's tail-ends. You'd think seeming this isn't Garliege Citidel nor any of the most common BST haunts, that I might get a bit of deicency when being informed of their presence.
Name >>> "Thanks for stealing all our pets."
Nope. Common decency isn't given cause apparently my reputation doesn't merit it.
Honestly? My first reaction is to tell the bst to go screw themselves. You think as a 63 rdm I'd be killing much stronger mobs for better drops, but I figured I would step out of the asshole competition and help exp groups in the process. I could go on to tell them that just because they're bsts, they don't have a right to every monster they decide to use as charm bait for their exp. That they are liable to the same types of competition I have as a farmer, and like me, they have to friken deal with it.
But honestly? I'm used to stepping aside for other people's needs in game, so it's the fact that they were rude about it more than anything else that got to me.
My response?
>>> Name "Sarcasm is not the way to get me to co-operate."
After a few more tells back and forth we eventualy agree that I'll leave the lizards alone until they hit 44 and then when they are gone I'll don't have anything to restrain about. (Of course I didn't tell them thats the story everyone gives me, and moving aside for everyone who comes my way is partly why I have crap for gil income in this game.)
Only at this point I realize that it is someone that I hold a loose affiliation with via other, older friends from 'back in the day'. So I change gears, try to ease the subject as to why I am here, try to ease the subject to be on more friendly terms. The person would have none of it. The person pretty much went through all means to say without directly saying it that I was an asshole and they wanted nothing to do with me.
Miffed at this, I ask how the hell they can make such a judgment of character when they barely even know me. Their response: "Just from what other people have told me." Of course when I point out how obviously stupid hear-say typically is when making judgment of people (Especially when it is a limited number.) The person goes to list the other two on the list I had previously posted above.
Ok, lets track for a moment my activity in relation to FFXI.
In the time I have played since the NA releace. I've heald a grand total of about seven shout conversations that have lasted more than 4 shouts before going to tell.
I've posted in tones of forums, but participated in about 10 or so flame wars, all of which I try to keep a neutral opinion. Occasionally I'll let out a firebrand of my own, but tend to drop it at the first one and NOT let a conversation drag on. Reticently, on KI, I've had one glaring exception to that where the one I was making an argument with simply would not stop insulting to regard the subject directly.
Everything else? Theorycrafting, .dat mods (rare if ever) chatting about Ballista, gathering information, and supporting Square Enix in their continuing efforts as they 'grow up' in the world of MMOs.
Oh but it's not "What I say, it's how I say it."
Excuse me, but weren't you the one that began the conversation with a sarcastic comment? I have a bad tendency of treating rudeness with rudeness in kind. I have terrible tact when I'm emotionally aggravated. These things are considered granted, because they're human.
But what's your excuse for being 'blunt' and rude? The fact that I farm mobs that are unclaimed and are usually a nusicance to partying expers? Or the fact that you prejudged me and decided that I wasn't 'worth' an honest chance to prove otherwise?
Ugh. It wouldn't get under my skin so much if I didn't loosely know the player. But the fact is I go out of my way to be polite to most people in game, granted that doesn't always reflect in the forums. I seriously enjoy helping people and it's why I was content staying out of endgame as long as I did. However, it costs a bitter price by never making a stand to force people to work around you, as opposed to always bowing out for others. One that, if more people end up treating me like this, I'm gonna stop paying.
Here's a layman's guide to Hyrist.
I'm chatty, I'm silly. I like to make dirty jokes a lot... well, any kind of joke really. However I genuinely care for people and about people more than I should. This leaves me to try to be outgoing on first instinct.
I like to brag about my 'little accomplishments' in the game, simply because those little things is what I enjoy.
I like talking tactics and stragity. I have a strong sence of morality and a distaste for government, military, and politics.
I can get emotional at times and this may leave me to be irrational. Usually a cool calm and polite head is quick to get me to check myself, in which case I'll disappear, calm down, (ie find a place to rant and let it go.) and come back on. When I see others doing the same thing, I try to give them the same courtesy.
I'm defensive to scrutiny and being rude to me will get you under my skin and on my 'bad list' quick. Constructive criticism may be resisted, but is never truly unwelcome. Always remember that I'm good intending, I never mean to ruin anyone's experience in this game or purposely piss people off. But not all my ideas are as sound as I would like them to be. If I offer advice and you don't want it, state it clearly and I'll back off... eventually. (It doesn't count if you're rude.)
I enjoy casual parties at generally any exp speed. Fast one's are fun, but I do like chatting a little, so if it is moving too fast for any conversation at all, I get uncomfortable. I'm usually self conscious about my performance and will typically ask for opinions as to how I did and how to improve. It's my goal to get better as I go along.
However, even as a RDM I don't like main-healing. I focus my RDM on enfeebeling (opting for MND potency over spell accuracy (skill gear+ or staves) I eat Goblin Mushpot and will ask a WHM to cover hastes before trying to take on any myself. (Resting on RDM slows down the chain, and I like keeping a small pocket of exp for emerancys.)
I'm not going to level whm for a sub till I hit level 70 so please don't ask for it. I sub blm because I love the extra enfeebling spells and utilities. (Not having to ask for a D2 is nice, so is escape.)
I suck at making gil in this game, and constantly am looking for a decent, reliable source of income.
I have a Fiance on game named Irisjir, whom I love dearly, but we do sometimes get into fights. Those fights might slip to the ears of others, and I do apologize for them.
If you don't like the tone of the parts of this post, or any of it above. Please, blacklist me as soon as you see me. Don't bother talking to me, don't tell me how 'horrible' or rude of a person I am. I'm not here to win any rewards for tact. I'm here to enjoy my game time, it's small enough as is with college demanding my attentions.
Anyways, sorry for the vent. This is X-posted across the forums I typically post and ghost. Hope to have an enjoyable time with most of you in game.
