i have a geforce 5200...
downloaded NVIDIA ForceWareâ„¢ Ver. 56.64...
bump mapping is disabled
directx 8
If your game crashed right when you run it, it's the POL I guess, you haven't got to the FFXI part yet.
Check the POL config and maybe toggle fullscreen/windows and see if any of that works?

i tried that, and it didn't make any difference at all. T^T
it still showed a black screen for a second and closed out and went back to my desktop.

I would try going into msconfig.exe and removing like every program except things in the windows directory, and .dlls that look legit, then restart the PC. And see if the program runs better when it is "alone"

someone else told me to remove spyware, trojans, etc, but i'm sure that my computer is clean...
i went to the official website to see the system requirements and i saw that i met all of them, so i have no idea how to fix this problem.
i even searched around the forum for a good answer, but i couldn't find anyone else that had the same problem as me. when there was, the methods that were posted didn't help me at all.

Is that DirectX 8.0 or 8.1? FFXI requires at least version 8.1 (and plays nice with version 9 as well).
Also, have you checked the Windows Application Event Log for possible telltale errors?
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > System Tools > Application.
Check the list to see if any errors appear when PlayOnline shuts down.

Maybe try safe mode installation, windows doesnt always allow this to work. but it could.
Other then that. maybe try putting a 'fake' or irrelevent tag on the program startup line. Right click on the POL shortcut and goto properties...
Eg. in halflife you could put -w (windowed) after c:/blah/~/~halflife.exe in the run target box. Just try this to trick the program into executing differently.
Also, the opposite of that could be to go into the run target and remove any "-X" sorta tags

i checked into the application list, and it didn't show any errors when POL closed...
also, i downloaded directx 9 and restarted the computer, but that didn't help either.

At this point I would recommend calling PlayOnline Support (the number is in the back of the manual that came with the game). I've never heard of anyone with this sort of error before. :(

well, the problem with that is they require a playonline id number, which i don't have because i can't get POL to work for me. T^T

There should be an option for technical support for installation, no?
