Distinguishing Between Evade and Shadow Absorbed

I am considering leveling up NIN because it seems to be a fun job. I just got to 12 tonight and got Ut:Ichi. However, I am having trouble counting my shadows. I can't tell if I evaded an attack or if my shadow absorbed the damage.

Is the animation any different? Is it some chat filter that I have turned on so I don't see it? I remember when I party with ninjas I actually see messages about THEIR shadows being absorbed.

Turn off the filter for "Attacks you evade."

That filter covers shadows as well as parry and evasion.
