Would be useful to know what level you are first - there's a lot of gear to cover in that range. Your race will also determine some of what will be useful to you, as your first race-specific gear shows up in the late 20s.

Anything with +MP recovered while healing (Pilgrim's Wand at 10, Baron's Slops at 20, Seer's Tunic at 29) are really the major pieces you'll want to acquire if you can. They'll do more for you than virtually any other gear you can get until level 51.

This is 20 and lower gear
Pilgrims Wand http://ffxi.somepage.com/itemdb/6983 rare/ex hunted outside of windy on a low level bird grants Increased MP +2 regen while healing

If you have a lot of gill Baron's Slops http://ffxi.somepage.com/itemdb/6804 +1 mp regen while healing don't worry if you can't afford it it's a luxery not a requirement.

At 29th level the Seer's Tunic http://ffxi.somepage.com/itemdb/5924 gives more mp regen. Keep mp regen items for gearswap when resting it's very worthwhile.

Grab your club and endlessly club down mobs that check easy prey.
You can keep going on a lot longer on those and they will net you experience points faster then clubbing decent challenge which give you more points for the kill but also more time you need to rest your HP and MP back.

When you reach level 10/11 go back to your hometown and sell all the crystals, and other drops on the auction house for a little cash.
Then change to Black mage and do the same, Black mage uses the same gear at lower levels and it will net you more crystals and other drops which will give you some extra gil for the gear and spells you need.
Also, check the vendors in the starter city for gear and spells because you will end up a lot cheaper then when you buy at the auction house.
Next to that you will have it ready as a subjob when you are able to get one at level 18.

2 birds with one stone.

At level 10/11 and higher you will start to gain experience points in parties, which will net you with less drops and less money over all.
My advise is before you start hitting Valkurm dunes buy a sturdy fishing rod and fish in Selbina while waiting for a party.
Sell what you catch to the local shops there.

This would make sense, except for the fact that Selbina has only one fish worth going after (Fat Greedie), and that one fish is only useful for a quest that isn't repeatable. None of the other fish there are worth much of anything on the open market, much less to NPCs.

Still, it's a way to pass the time between parties and gain some fishing skill (which is in itself useful at early levels once you get back to a town that has moat carp).

Since you are a Tarutaru, I would suggest that you focus on getting +MND gear instead of +MP gear, since you should have more than enough MP as a Taru. :) If you have nothing else to wear in a certain slot, then feel free to get some +MP gear, but in my opinion, you really don't need it.

That would make sense, if the OP isn't a WHM.

The Valkrum Dunes theorem dictates that a nearly naked Galka WHM with no support job will get party invite faster than any DRK/WHM with every magic and combat skill capped, using mostly HQ gear, who waits patietly for that party invite with an inventory full of pineapple juice.

The unfortunately corollary is that the silly, overprepared DRK doesn't have the inventory space to bring fishing rod and bait and have room for fish. He needs those slots to hold some Selbina Milk, Meat Jerky, and every armor upgrade, Great Sword, and Scythe he needs for the next 5 levels.

So, trying to stay awake for that illusive invitation, he reads ffxionline and unintentionally tries to derail every other thread he responds to... >_>;

One thing I've noticed, when playing with lower level WHMs that bug me, are those that, after hearing hammers can be useful to solo/farm, equip a hammer with no MP/MND boosts and melee in a battle. If nothing else, please get the NQ MND/INT+ Wand at your level. They're never more than 5-6k on my server at least, and they're one of the best, if not the best, you can use while healing at low levels.

Going from back what i said up there, I think one of the best pieces of advice is to learn early on how to juggle pieces of armor (weapons in particular). It may not seem like it's a big deal ATM, since you'll probably only have a MND wand and perhaps a Pilgrims, if you go out of your way to get one, but the experience is amazingly useful later on, when you have to use the Ele Staffs, and you're not use to changing weapons

The yew wand, or the yew wand +1 (which probably isn't a whole lot more expsensive than the NQ Yew Wand), is a good weapon, and you will probably end up using it for quite a while.

BTW, the yew wand is lvl 18.

I did a quick search of wands on somepage.com (http://ffxi.somepage.com) and here's what I came up with for wands:

Best wand for a lvl 8 whm (in terms of stat boosts):
Maple Wand +1 (http://ffxi.somepage.com/itemdb/571)

The normal quality (NQ) version in case you can't afford the high quality (HQ) version:
Maple Wand (http://ffxi.somepage.com/itemdb/570)

At level 9, you can wear the upgraded wand (HQ and NQ listed):
Willow Wand +1 (http://ffxi.somepage.com/itemdb/573)
Willow Wand (http://ffxi.somepage.com/itemdb/572)

There's a Mana Wand (http://ffxi.somepage.com/itemdb/8026) too, but most likely that wand will be absurdly expensive. o_o;

you need to basically know what are the basics of whm needs :D
of course at lower levels you should focus on curing!
for that, you should focus on gears(regardless of its slot) that gives you the most of the following stats respectively: Healing magic skill(i dont think its available at low levels) > Mind > MP(switch between those two depending on ur mp pool a.k.a race) that should be it..for resting get all the "MP recovered while healing+X" gear as much as available!
at lv51 you should get the light/dark/water elemental staves light for healing, water for divine magic and spells like stoneskin etc. and dark for hmm basically aspir + some black magics if you are using some!
good luck

If you have a good amount of gil saved up and you're Elvaan or Galka, you should absolutely look into getting an Astral Ring (Lv10 Converts 25HP->MP). Having an extra three Cures or Cure 2 is a big boost!

...or you could wait until level 40 and buy an Electrum Ring that converts 20HP>MP for a tiny fraction of the price.

Astral Ring is totally overrated, except for Red Mages who have reason to worry about their balance of MP/HP. And before you ask, yes I own one - I used to own two, until I got my Tamas Ring.

I'll probably continue to own and use mine on my WHM until I get a Tamas Ring.. We Elvaan are just.. not endowed with a big MP pool.

True. But honestly the 5MP difference between Astral and Electrum Ring is negligible. Max MP is useful as an emergency fund for crisis situations like linked enemies, etc, but as you rise in level, your MP flow becomes less dependent on your max MP pool since a proportionately smaller amount of your MP recovery comes from resting and is instead supplied by Refresh, Ballads, or Evoker's Roll.
