Salutations.
Eauijhkuu Here.
I am slightly curious to know how many people have completed this particular mission. I know that CoP is pretty old, but I just recently got it for PS2 during the summer (Thanks to a very good friend of mine). So far, the storyline is pretty intriguing, and even though I haven't finished ZMs yet, I'm trying to get as much of CoP done as I possibly can.
When I do return to FFXI (within two weeks), I was hoping to be able to tackle CoP mission 2-5 with my THF job. But I was wondering how effective I would be to my teammates.
What setup completes this mission, and why?
And what's the strategy as far as fighting the boss is concerned?
Gimme some feedback; Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Like all missions, if you have good people any job can fit in. I did 2-5 with a PLD, WHM, BLM, RDM, NIN and other DD (a DRK or something i cant remember). Obviously your THF would fit in the 'Other DD' slot.

According to everything I've read, you need 2 kiters, a tank, a healer, and 2 DDs. You can really do it with any setup, as long as it's a good one. I did mine with 2 NIN/WARs, a WHM/BLM, a THF/NIN, a RNG/NIN, and a BST/WAR. We started out with the THF aggroing all 3 bosses, the RNG shooting one for us to fight, and the BST grabbing the other one with his pet. The THF would use Flee and run around the area, only running by me when she needed a Cure (I could cure her since she aggroed and never actually claimed the monster). The BST kept the other one occupied with his pet while we took down the first one. Unfortunatly, we got a little disorganized after that and ended up dying when the second boss was about to die. I Reraised and exited the arena so I could come back and Raise the rest of the party when I was unweakend and we could try again.
The second time the NIN decided to kite, as the BST was having a little trouble. We pretty much did the same thing, THF aggroes, RNG grabs one, NIN grabs another and starts soloing/tanking that one and we take on the first one. We took the THFs next, then the NINs. Three of us died, and three would have lived if I hadn't accidently cured myself instead of the NIN.:o
I would reccomend bring lots of Yellow Liquid, Hi-Ether and Yag Drinks for the WHM(s), and Hi-Potions for the others when the mage can't always get a cure out in time. Always make sure the Healers have Reraise and can Reraise themselves and exit if needed. Use Yellow Liquid when the Mammet has a polearm (DRG) or has a staff (BLM) as a last resort. The sword can deal a lot of damage. That's pretty much all I can think of. Need 2 people to distract the other 2 Mammets, a few good DDs, and one or two healers.
Good luck! :)
Have 2 kiters for the fight, preferable beastmaster or rdm/nin. Have a decent tank of course, some DD, and a whitemage.
The mammets will change jobs during the fight, blm being the worst job and drg being the best. All melees are required to bring yellow liquid and basically use it on the mammets so that when/if they switch to drg, it'll "freeze" them in that state and they won't be able to switch jobs. Once you finish off the first mammet, tell the kiter to pull one toward you. Once you finish the second, take the last mob and you're home free.
Personally, I got lucky with the fight, seeing as how the summoner died just as we killed the first mammet, so lady luck helped me win this fight.

I may be good at a certain job, but it doesn't necessary mean that it would be useful or wise in this instance. What this mission really needs is people who are proficient in kiting. Can't really see myself kiting as blm. ::worried::

CoP 2-5 is a classic divide-and-conquer strategy.
You need 2 people to hold or kite two of the Mammets. The rest is optional based on the jobs and strategy you'd like to use.
NIN/WARs can hold the Mammets off nearly indefinitely with a WHM supporting them (Haste, Silence, Cures), so one popular setup is NIN, NIN, WHM, DD, DD + 1 more support healer.
RDM/NIN do an excellent job at kiting them, since they can just run away using Gravity and Bind, while Beastmasters, Puppetmasters and Summoners can use their pets to distract a Mammet to buy time.
The key is that once you start kiting or holding two of them, you have to kill the third Mammet very quickly before your kiters/holders get into trouble. It's a good idea to use 2 hour abilities and medicines like Icarus Wing to finish off that first one ASAP. You're much less likely to need them once the odds become 6 vs. 2, and eventually 6 vs. 1.

This is a bit risky. The whitemage in the party might be too busy curing other party members due to a number of instances, one of them being that the mammets switch to blm and cast spells on party members (assuming stun is not used). The ninja can't solely rely on the whitemage if he's running around in a circle kiting the mob.

You have 6 people split into 2 groups. One group is the kiter (We used a PLD/NIN) and the WHM the kiter runs in gets aggro from all 3 mammets and runs around like an idiot doing nothing to the mammets themselves. The WHM can then spend all the time in the world healing the kiter while they do their Utsusemi/stonskin/blink whatever they do depending on what job is kiting.
The second group is a Tank, 2 DD and the support healer. WHen I did this it was a NIN, BLM (me), other DD (I think it was a DRK) and a RDM healer (the support healer). They pick the mammets off one at a time. When there's one left, all 6 party members can focus on it.
The only danger comes from if the 4 can not kill the first 2 mammets fast enough. The WHM healing the kiter will probably be getting low on MP by the time you've killed the 2 mammets. This ended up not being too much of a problem for us as we used a PLD as a kiter. Once the first 2 were down, they simply used Invincible allowing everyone else to 2h as needed to kill the last one very quickly.
BTW you use Yellow Liquid to stop the mammets from changing jobs.

I cleared it with NIN NIN PLD DD WHM RDM the first time through, and have done it with other configurations since (such as with an 2x RDM/NIN kiter). We had both Ninjas square off with a Mammet head on in different corners, and the WHM and RDM in the center would just Silence them if either of the held Mammets switched to BLM. We didn't even bother with kiting, as it made things riskier as long as the NINs kept enough distance for the rest to be out of AoE range.
I don't know if it works any more, but I do recall that you could also use Yellow Liquid right at the beginning of the fight to lock them into hand-to-hand attacks for a while (which they're horribly inaccurate with), which can buy you some additional time.
In any case, as long as you have a method to neutralize two of the Mammets for a while and manage to kill the first Mammet before either of your holders/kiters runs out of options, you should win easily.

Guess it just depends on the setup. Our whm stayed with the group while the rdm/nin and bst kiters did their own thing.

A lot of 2-5 is luck as well. Even with the perfect setup, the mammets can spam Transmogify and live way too long. All in all though, the fight is about balance. You need two kiters who know how to kite and the rest of the party needs to kill as quickly as possible. It's best if both sides excel, but one can definitely make up for the other. We had the most success with a 3 Nin setup on the last series of runs I did. Like Icemage indicated, ninjas can make excellent kiters and can effectively solo a mammet if they're on their game. In fact, one of the ninjas we had managed to take out his mammet before we even got finished with the 2nd of the three.

Even with the perfect setup, the mammets can spam Transmogify and live way too long. Thats why you prepare and bring Yellow Liquids with you. Lock them into their MNK or DRG types and they don't do all that much damage and die very easily. With all the complaining everyone does about it, I was really disappointed by the battle.
If you have trouble with it now, you'll have trouble with it again later. The Mithran Trackers is almost this exact same BCNM again.

Yes and no... a SMN can nearly solo the Tracker BC if the tank can keep him alive.

We did 2-5 with 2 blu/nin, whm, drg, nin, and a mnk. It was a mess but it worked. Blu phy spells did not seem to get resisted so we where able to just melee and switch back and forth. We did spam healing breeze a lot though. :/
Dont' bother with Kiters. Get 2 NINs to Solo the 2 Extra mammets, Have a RDM Silence those 2 Mamments and toss a couple cures on the NIN. Also the NINs bring HP regen and just a couple Hi-potions they should be ok.
The absolute easiest set up is 3 NINs 3 WHM or sub in RDMs for WHMs.

i would say 3nin 3whm each nin solos one each and has a yellow liquod to keep it in drg for pretty easy if whm enfeebles and w/e we passed it first try with this setup

Since this thread was recently necro bumped (humped?):
One can definitely kite as THF/NIN on CoP 2.5 (http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/quests.html?realm=&fquest=564;mid=11416911743145). I've done it myself, and I've had another THF do the same. We always kite two Mammets with one THF, with a backup kiter (BST or NIN/RDM) playing DD until needed to help out.
