Range is fixed, not depend on instruments.
If both give same bonus then they're the same I guess.

String instruments give better area effect range on songs. The boost in range depends on the song, but it seems to add about 50% to the distance. Handy when you need to hit a lot of people with Ballad (or restrict it if you don't have much room to maneuver).

String skill does not affect the range increase from using string instruments at all (neither does Wind skill for wind instruments, for that matter).

Other then the Lamia Harp being the reward from a quest, I don't see one.

That's my guess as well since people don't seem capable of complete thoughts these days. There's really no difference between them, they add no bonus to songs I'm aware of, they are, however, nice for skilling up stringed with Finale. But really, any harp is good for that.
