Is it hard to become a summoner?
Are there a lot of summoners?
Is white mage a good sub for summoner?
Can summoner use swords?
Is Mithra a good race for Summoner (even if it's not I'm not changing, I just want to know)?
Are Summoners important to have?
How does summoning work?
What summons are there (I know of a couple but I don't know them all)?

Thanks for you time.

Finding the Ruby to start the quest is the equivalent of suicide. It takes so long you'll want to throw yourself out a window, but the rest of the quest is farily easy.

Right now, there are a ton of summoners, ninjas, dragoons, and samurais. It seems everyone is getting all the new jobs since the expansion did get released just a few days ago. Because of this, everyone is trying it out, but I'm sure after a week or so the people who want to be summoners will continue raising it and the rest will drop it and go back to their main job.

Both White Mage and Black Mage are good subjobs for Summoners because all you really need a MP to keep your summons out, and the MP boost is always nice.

The last time I checked the auction house, summoners could only use daggers, one-handed staffs, and two-handed staffs I believe. I might have missed a few other weapons, however.

It really doesn't matter what your race is. You don't get as much MP like a Taru would but you get more HP and other fun stuff. Besides, my friend is a Mithra summoner so it must be good!

After you finish the summoner's quest, you acquire Carbuncle. Then you go into your menu, and choose the Carbuncle summoning ability, and it gets summoned. He pops up from the ground and he follows you, then from the same menu you can choose commands and have Carbuncle do stuff, like attack for example.

Right now, there's Carbuncle, and two other summons which are Wind Spirit and Ice Spirit. The spirits are basically floaty little things that have special elemental powers, and they do pretty well against monsters that are weak against the element. I hear there's also Ifrit, but you don't get him until level 30 or something like that. It might be a rumor so don't quote me on that.

Thanks a lot for the info. It looks like I found myself a new lvl 30 main job. As for getting the ruby to start the quest it doesn't matter how long it takes to get it I'm very patient.
