View Full Version : I'm hardly the networking smarty, so... (question about hubs)

I am connected to the 'net via a 2Wire HomePortal 100 router. For the most part, I know how to hook up new devices and blah blah, etc. However, the PS2 Network Adapter, I noticed, only has Ethernet support as far as broadband goes, and yet my Homeportal router's only Ethernet port is currently used by connection from my computer.

So I assume what I need is a hub, correct? If so, any recommendations as far as specific brands, makes, models go? And if a hub isn't what to use in this situation (I can code a storm in C and ASM but I am a big stupid when it comes to hardware  ), what then do I need in order to network multiple ethernet-based devices through one single ethernet port?

Well I have no idea how this "homeportal" of yours wors so it's kind of hard to tell you what you need. Can you connect multiple PCs to the net now? How do you do it?

Yes, you can connect, as the manual states, "up to 250" computers to the router's little intranet. So I'm assuming, with the router's two USB ports, one HomePNA port, and one Ethernet port, that where there is a will there is a way. It just doesn't go into detail about specifics of how to, unfortunately, and I'm only blindly guessing about the hub.

I currently have my computer, via direct Ethernet, and my mother's computer, via HomePNA (doesn't use an Ethernet port of course) hooked up to the router, right now. I'm pretty sure it's like any other router, if that helps.

Well this is an issue with your Homeportal system. I have no documentation on how this sytem works. You should have recievied a manual with it. You will need to figure out how to use this system or figure out an alternate solution. IE instead of using the ethernet to connect to your PC use it to connect to a hub first. Again I have no idea how this system of yours works. It is not any type of standard that I am aware of. It sounds like it uses propriatary hardware to conntent your moms PC? What does it use? You will need to find documentation on it and figure it out.
