I know that my info mabobber says I'm a Tarutaru/Black Mage/White Mage, but now I'm having second thoughts. I don't want to be a Red Mage, because then I can't learn some of the most powerful spells of each magic group. I'm afraid that even if I'm surrounded by a whole alliance, I'll be so weak I'll get instantly killed. I also want healing magic, which brings me back to the whole Red Mage issue. I came up with Tarutaru/Black Mage/Paladin. Do you think this is a good decision? Should I make it Paladin/Black Mage? Should I change my race? (Which I don't want to because Tarutaru's ROCK!) Am I completely going in thje wrong direction? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There is no wrong combinations so if you like Tarutaru, then just stick with Taru.
Paladin/BLK can be done, you won't excel too much in physical combat but you can remedy to that with skill, plus you'll wear better armors and have more defense than a white mage/black mage would. Of course white spells would be less potent, but not making you useless at all
As for Red Mage I think you underestimate its potential, its not as bad as you think, just ask Jei about his Red Mage.

I dont think i understand your question...you want magic so your going Knight?
with Knight as a sub your only getting half the minimal healing magic knights give you, if you want the higher level magics like you say, stay with White Mage O.o
Red Mage is actually a great class, you may get picked over at times for a White or Black mage, but Red Mage can solo well at early levels and help the group with thier unique spells all thier own.
Red Mage has the regen skills that are sought after pretty well, I dont know a whole lot about the class, but i know they are not insignifigant. Ask Jei, hopefully he will come and post here, hes a level 60 Red Mage, and seems very happy with it, I dont think he would have taken another route.
Edit: also, as a mage, its the Partys team to protect you, cause you will draw alot of hate from the enemy, meaning it will want to attack you. Its the Melee classes of the party's job to keep you alive. So dont worry about dieing, thats why Warriors have Taunt.

(Hmmm, there's a whole seperate Race/Job board... doh! :o)
I mean that Im afraid that if I have nothing but magic jobs, if a monster comes up and whacks me Im dead meat. I heard that Paladins have high defense, whiuch would counter a BMs wussiness, and some White Magic, which would add to it. I dont really understand Red Mages. Is it possible for them to learn the REALLY good spells like Ultima or its equivelent? I always try to look at the end in a game, so I try and do stuff that, while maybe not benificial at the moment, will be good later in the game when its harder. So if a RM cant learn really high level spells, Id stay away from it. Basically, what Im trying to get at is getting a mage that can hold its own against some monsters and wont be killed by them in one hit. So basically the race/job choices for that are:
Tarutaru/RM/???
Tarutaru/BM/Pldn.
Galka(??)/BM/WM
Or I could stick with my original plan and have a Tarutaru/BM/WM cheat some rich*** newbie who has some kick butt armor into giving it to me for a Wool Hat.
P.S. Jei, whoever the heck you are, get over here, please!
You might take this as bad advice...but it's true.
When you get FFXI, you automatically know while fooling with the chars what you want to be. You just know. My advice is, wait.

Lei, Kei, and Jei ....wow there is a pattern in this thread.
No Red Mages dont learn any of the high level spells, they learn some good ones though, and a few all thier own, They can defenately hold thier own.
The thing is, it doesnt really matter about being a mage and holding your own after about level 12, where youll mainly be in Parties or you will have one HELL of a time leveling, lol. And in the Parties its the job of the tanks and melee fighters to keep the enemy away from the mage. Cause if they mages die, your party is screwed. Black/White Mages get alot of hate from enemies because of thier powerful spells so the enemy will want to go after them the most, yet its the job of the fighters up front to taunt the creature away from you so you can do your thing.
