i figured since i have fresh blood from Ornery sheep i'd go ahead and get it...but is +1 DMG and +1 AGI worth the NM battle?? but then again i could easily get a lvl 50 to solo it for me...tried with my lvl 37 war and delvled...reason i asked was i really don't see any other NIN with this...i think it would be a great katana to use as main till lvl 24 and either use Hibari+1 x2 or main Hibari+1 sub Gassan...I think it would be a huge cost effective move...since your not constantly upgrading katanas...

It's pretty worthwhile. It's free, relatively easy to obtain, and can be used for several levels. No reason not to get it, quite frankly.^^

i can honestly say no other NIN has had this. I asked my wife to check my bazzar and she told me someone had asked me something. the /tell went like this. >>krudest Is that a new TOAU wep? i know they were catering towards >>Krudest lower lvls but not that low...
had her do a /sea all krudest he/she is a lvl 63 nin on fairy.

I got it and it's really worth it, but if you are afraid of a little triggered NM Leech then don't worry about it...

its amazing how little people know about the 2nd gen COP NMs like that. they added a second nm in nearly every zone with a r/e drop but for the most part, no one camps them. there are tons of great low level r/e items from those NMs. Gassan is one I'll look for if I ever level NIN again. Next up though I need to camp Carnero before I start into SAM.

Oh ya, that Great Katana is awesome til lvl 21 or so, really worth it imo. :biggrin:

I got the Gassan (http://ffxi.somepage.com/itemdb/6988) and thought it was a nice katana. I like rare/ex (read:free) weapons and especially things that are not very hard to obtain. I am not sure how many you would need to get it though, because I was able to solo it on my other job.

A lvl 37 WAR should be able to kill the NM without problems, I've seen lvl 20 players hold their ground well against the NM while I was helping them.
Gassan is really worth it, until you replace it in your mid 20s with something better. For the most part, it's the only Katana I think with a +stat on it. A good reason to get it if you asked me.
I have a Gassan and a Rotetsu (sp?) which is a boomerang. Both give +stat and is easy to obtain. When I'm out of shurikens, I just spam my boomerang. Sure, it's only like 15 dmg per hit. But considering that (a) It's any damage and (b) You get TP faster, it's a win-win in my book.
I used it from L15 to 24 when I replaced it with a Hibari +1. A very good katana and completely free. It's also a 100% drop so I really don't see a reason to not get it.

I knew I didn't have a chance in hell of winning the fight, so I didn't bother to try. :(

Yeah, I have that boomerang. I came across the NM while hunting for Rampaging Ram.
As for the Gassan, it's pretty sweet. I get the pop item whenever I kill sheep on the hill in South Gustaberg on lowbie jobs. Everytime I get it I ask the LS if anyone needs the Gassan. Nobody is ever interested so I just toss it.
Another good Rare/Ex drop is the Pilgrim's Wand, it gives +2 MP recovered while healing. It's a decent heal weapon until you hit 51 for the Dark Staff. Combined with a Seer's Tunic and cookies, you heal up MP like crazy for a lowbie. It drops from a bird NM in West Sarutabaruta.
I also got that Gelong Staff and it sat in my Mog Safe rotting until I just tossed it. +HP recovered while healing isn't all that great when you sub WHM at those low levels.

I got the Katana and Great Katana last night running around Gusta and Dangruf with my wife. Both fights were pretty easy for my 37 THF. Now I can work on levelling SAM for the update.

Gassan is the most worthwhile spawn NM i've ever solo'd, honestly. Well, maybe Mycophile cuffs...

It's easy to get if you know what you're doing. Both NMs travel a circuit that goes around the highlands. They move very quickly and stops at certain intervals. I've already killed 3 (For myself and helping other friends)
Easiest way to do this is port down over near 18:00 during full or new moon. Grab a chocobo and make sure you're subbing RNG. Spam widescan and once you get the NM on the map, track it. It's really that simple.
For the lazy, there's a 50% chance that the NMs will spawn near the crag and the surrounding areas. You can remain near the crag, at 18:03 start moving from the chocobo npc and go counter clockwise. However, if someone on a chocobo sees the NM, more than likely they will jump on it.
I also notice that if it doesn't spawn near the crag, there's a large chance that it will spawn in the two Tremor Ram spawn areas. I know that for myself, I've gotten Vran in this way. Other people whom I've spoken have also said that they had caught one of the NMs in these areas as well. In fact, in one case, someone was glad that Vran popped when he spotted Rampaging Ram. It distracted a THF and he was able to claim Rampaging. LOL

Nah. There's actually quite many Katanas with +stat on them. Gassan, Fukuro, Ohaguro, Anju, Zushio, Buboso and Shinogi to name a few. Check http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Category:Katana for more.

I think he meant the only Katana with +stat at that level range. Gassan is lvl 15, Fukuro is lvl 28.
