Let's build a list of 'to-do' that everyone new to Besieged can refer to. I know there are the official ones, but as we keep learning more and more about each besiege, I'm sure the vets have something they want to share.
To start us off:
Very very Important aspects of besieged:
1. Generals are 'seals' to the hall of binding which in turn protects the Astral Candescense.
2. If generals fall, it means there is one less seal to protect the Hall of Binding.
3. If all 5 generals fall, you have limited time to defeat the enemies at the Hall of Binding before they take it with them and thus Al Zahbi will loose.
4. Defeating Notorious Monsters can aid in besiege ending faster.
5. However, concentrating on NMs at the cost of all the generals is a sure fire way to loose, therefore use your judgement and pay attention to /shouts for request to help rescue/protect a General.
6. VERY IMPORTANT, if there are consecutive besieges, any generals lost/captured in the previous fight will remain down, so there will be less seals on the Hall of Binding.
What can I do to be more involved in the fight?
1. It's always a good idea to check on how many seals are left on the Hall of Binding before the start of a besiege (It will show this in the starting cutscene of every besiege)
2. If there are less than 3 Generals standing, hurry to the closest General and attempt to rally others to protect these generals. Be courteous in your shout and be helpful with messages such as <pos> Target the General is fighting, the HP level of the General, what type of help is needed (for example: provoke, cure the general etc.)
3. Generals are located in 'all' the squares that is not the bastion. Here is a list of locations for all Generals during Besieged mode:
General Mihli - Flame Serpent Square - Where Ghajd usually stands
General Rughadjeen - Ulthalam Parade - In between J7 and J8
General Narjelith - Galeserpent Square - Up the stairs between I-9 and J-9
General Zazarg - Chocobo Alley - Up the Stairs right dead center of the square
General Galadar - Springserpent Square - In the center.
4. Generals do 'move around' a lot. They target the first thing that breaches their defense line (the square they're protecting) and will follow their target (or targets because they switch mid fight sometimes) and will move around from one square to another if their target is being kited far.
5. Haste the generals, keep their hp up and try to rally tanks/meelee to kite mobs away from the Generals. Sometimes a General can tank up to 10 things and still be standing! But not for long if they do not receive heals.
6. Useful Tip from Caspian: Do a /sea early in the Besieged. If you are very low for the beastmen's level, you'll want to send someone to Whitegate to shout for help.
Well here are just a few to start!
FAQ:
>>What determines what prisoners are taken? And how do I rescue them?
Everytime a Volunteer falls in battle, there is a random chance an NPC will be taken prisoner. (credit sevenpointflaw)
>>How does hate work in Besieged?
It seems to be general consensus that it's random. A 'yellow' mob can agro anyone and anything that crosses it's path. Tanks have voked over and over and while kiting, the NMs can also agro anyone within it's running path but still go after the tank.

How does hate work in Besieged? It is to my understanding that it is completely random. Not only did I get full hate from using Assault, but Shiva got hate before even doing anything besides being out (no attacks, nothing, no commands sent AT ALL)

Yeah, that seems to be my understanding as well. I don't do a whole lot of damage at 61, but I'll still occasionally pull hate. I don't know that its entirely random, but it definately seems to be a different system than the regular xp or hnm setup.
Kinda a half joke, but relevant point. Do a /sea early in the Besieged. If you are very low for the beastmen's level, you'll want to send someone to Whitegate to shout for help. We're always incredibly short for all Besieges on Fairy. Usually start at around 250 people for a lvl 5 Besieged. If we're lucky we'll get people as it continues. If we hold out long enough we'll end up with 550+ people before its all over and can usually win it.

What determines what prisoners are taken? And how do I rescue them?
Prisoners are rescued by going to the beastman stronghold belonging to the force that captured them (Mamook for Mamool Ja, Arrapago Reef for Undead, Halvung for Trolls) and finding where they're locked up. You need a key to unlock their cell and let them out. The keys you use depend on where you're going to free people - Mamook Blackscale Key for Mamook, Halvung Brass Key for Halvung or Lamian Bone Key for Arrapago Reef), and are dropped from beastmen in the respective regions. Cell doors can also be picked by THF.
Upon freeing prisoners you get 100 Imperial Standing points, and when you go back to Al Zahbi, if you speak with the person you rescued you will get a ??? Item as well.

How does hate work in Besieged? It is to my understanding that it is completely random. Not only did I get full hate from using Assault, but Shiva got hate before even doing anything besides being out (no attacks, nothing, no commands sent AT ALL) Hate isn't completely random. Almost any action builds up hate. "Assault" gets a lot of hate. And even if you had only a sliver of hate from a mob when you summoned Shiva, she would've immediately targeted the mob that was targeting you.
I have to be especially careful in the hate department. The mobs hit a lot harder than the players do. That's why I usually stick with Cure IIs and pass them around liberally. On a couple of occasions, mobs have hunted *me* down specifically (Reraise FTW) because I happened to be the main healer for someone that was beating on them. I've even drawn hate by casting Stoneskin on myself.

This may seem a universal question, but the search function isn't working for me for some reason, and I can't seem to find a good answer by browsing.
What's the suggested level for besieged?
I'm kind of freshfaced to Aht Urghan in general, but I've done one besieged in a Linkshell party. I'm 39 WAR/NIN for my job. Is that horribly gimped for something like Troll Mercenaries? I got eaten alive in the Undead Swarm so I'll hold off on that one for a bit yet.
Thanks.

Melee jobs should at least be around 60+ to really even hit the mobs. I just run around on my drg with thf subbed so I can crank out some nice Sa+Wheeling Thrust numbers.

As for level, anyone 50+ with Cure spells can be useful. You will always be needed for curing, raising, hasting (if you're in a party), refreshing (if you're RDM, of course), and several other things. Erase is also a great tool against Trolls (I think) because of those stupid bombs which spam a VERY nasty Burn effect. I almost always sub WHM for Besieged for Erase.
Melee, in general, are better off to wait until at least 60, as Skoal said. You won't be hitting worth much of a damn otherwise. And Besieged is always a great way to skill up weapons, magic skills, and other fun things. Just not crafting. ;)

I usually go lvl up my Ninjitsu and throwing during Besieged if its not capped from gaining lvls. With my lvl 40 nin i can land maybe 5out of 12 hits with my rogetsurin and my Hojo, Kuyrami and Jubaku stick but not for very long. i can usually walk away from a besieged with 1k XP. lol also make sure you're skillin up on a claimed mob by either a lvl 75 nin or pld. wasn't watching one time and started landing hits and jitsus and got argo OOPS!! Another good tip is maybe corner yourself by a General...they will heal you also but i've only experienced that with the mithra generals.

And now for the guilty question. Bad etiquette though it maybe, if I find myself just throwing out a staggering number of misses and 0 dmg for the fight, will i still get xp if I tuck myself away somewhere and just try not to die? >_>

I'm pretty sure you'll get zero or ~150. There are a lot of theories that exp/isp gained is proportionate to the damage/healing that you do. I think level and activity have something to do with it. I typically cap out on my 75 DRG. At the same time, I ran around once as a 25 BLM on a DoT and tier 1 nuke fest and came out with 180.

Im new to ToAU as well.
So you can actually gain exp from Beseiged? What is the max cap? And As a 56RDM, if I go around healing (lol wont be able to DD), it is easy to get "cap" xp?
I assume all the usual rules apply when you die (xp loss, weakness).
I also read that it is a great way to get skillups spamming AoE's - wont i get too much hate if I do, and thus die a quick horrible death?

Lol I just read that, which answers some.
To clarify:
If all the NPCs arenot captured, do you automatically get these special items or do you have to find and talk to these NPC's?
There is no xp loss for dying in besieged.
The temporary items will be given to you automatically once besieged starts, or upon zoning into Al Zhabi if besieged is in progress. The items do not take up or require space in your regular inventory, they have their own special inventory space.

Cool.
How long does beseiged last *normally*?
Say I die in Beseiged, and do not get raised, choose to HP. Run straight back into Beseiged:
Will I get items all over again?
Does my exp/is points get reset?
Oo I cant wait to try out Beseged now! When is it next on?

I've seen some last 30 minutes and others last 4 hours or more.
While you can get new items if you HP, if the zone is full you won't get back in anyway.
I don't think dying resets it. However, leaving the zone probably would. At your level, your cap will be pretty low regardless. I would advise just to keep reraise up and just go around healing as many people as possible.
Its pretty random. Check the Besieged Region Map. When one of the enemy forces is listed as Preparing, then it means a Besieged will happen. The lag between Preparing and Attacking can take a couple hours though.

One of the temp items resets your JAs, including two-hours. If you die and hp and re-enter then you'll get the item again and can 2-hour again. Rinse. Repeat.
I was under the impression you didn't get them back but apparently you do.

Provided the zone isn't full you can get back in. If the zone is full you'll get kicked out even if your hp is in Al-Zahbi.

As long as Al wasabi isn't full you can zone back in at any time during besieged.
However I always thought doing so (Home point and zone back in) would reset your ISP/Exp points. I wonder if that's really the case.

02-20-2007, 10:12 AM
My hp is still in Al Zahbi. I would die, take revitalizer, call wyvern, use tp wing, sneak attack then find a mob, SS then use wheeling thrusts. Usually that was enough for the mob to turn to me and kill me.
Do the besieged Quturbs take a lot more damage than say mamool ja mobs?

Provided the zone isn't full you can get back in. If the zone is full you'll get kicked out even if your hp is in Al-Zahbi.
If I was already in the zone before I HP, wouldn't the act of me HPing ensure that there was room for me? But then, by that logic, I should be able to split a Fire Cluster even when my inventory is 60/60.
To ensure that there is room for me, should I do a /search of the zone during besieged? If I'm KO'ed, it's too late for that, since I can't carry out a /search at that point. What's a safe number of participants in that zone which would still allow me to HP in the middle of Besieged?
Edit: One more question. If I'm dead at the end of Besieged, will I still receive exp/IS? Last Besieged I was in, a large crowd of players (of which I was one) got slammed by a Mamool Ja Sapper. I personally took 4k dmg. Lots of dead bodies on the ground. I got a Raise just a few seconds before the Mamool Ja retreated. I'd hate to have been dead, and not gotten a reward for all the time I spent waiting just for the Besieged to start.

Do the besieged Quturbs take a lot more damage than say mamool ja mobs?
Yeah... Qutrubs are weak to piercing. We can do some nasty things to them.
And to answer Lyonheart:
The problem lies in that its not a static number. There is usually a steady flow in or out of the zone. If there is close to the max (700~) in there the whole time, then the spot you left may get filled before you get back in. However, if the number is the more typical 400-500 then you should be able to get right back in.
If you are dead when Besieged ends, you do not get an xp bonus. I'm 99% sure you don't get ISP as well.

nukes don't do much in besieged, but you could chainspell Bio II for some decent dark magic skill ups.
keep in mind if you have to run in every time you hp, you'll run the risk of being outside the zone or dead when the event ends, both of which result in 0 xp.

Yes if you HP xp is reset. I know this from personal experience(sp?). At level 6 Besieged the max exp Ive seen is 1080. For the most part I believe you normally get 1000 cap unless you kill a few extra mobs or something. You get exp even if you do nothing. Ive entered a Besieged as it ended and got around 180exp or something. You will not get exp if you're dead at the end and pretty sure you don't get any IS.
It is easy to get max exp if you are a mage. RDMs can get it easily, Haste and Cure some people including NPCs, dispel some mobs (Qutrub are good because they use AoE Protect, Shell, and Haste), spam Dia on any claimed mob you see, Raise dead people, etc etc etc and so forth...

B.R.I.N.G I.T O.N!!

A little late on the reply but: besiege ends when the invading forces retreat. A number of events can trigger the retreat:
- defeat enough of their forces
- defeat one or more of the 3 mid level NMs (I'm still unsure about this statement, as I have not been to a besiege lately where all 3 NMs are still standing)
- defeat the big bad (I dont think happens regularly - Only one I've witnessed personally is Gurfurlur and that was fun ^^)
- when the AC is taken (this can only happen if 1) all generals are dead 2) they breached the hall of binding and the defending forces were not able to stop them from taking the AC. On hades for example, though I wasn't there personally, my LS mates witnessed the coolest besieged ever. Invading forces had breached the Hall of Binding but the entire zone of defenders were there at the doorstep to greet them. not even 1 enemy force was able to reach the AC before the call for retreat was sounded
Fun stuff.
Question: If you die trying to intercept the enemy forces on their way to Al Zhabi do you lose xp? What effect does intercepting actually have?
LyonheartLakshmi
02-26-2007, 08:40 AM
My tip: don't engage Mamool Ja Sapper. Every time I attend a Besieged against the Mamool Ja, I end up dying once or twice to this fiend. I don't even know what kind of TP move or spell it's using. I just know that one second I don't even have hate from Mamool Ja Sapper, and the next second I've suffered 4k+ dmg and everyone around me is hitting the dirt with me. This guy has one hard hitting AoE.

I finally did my first Besieged!!
It was...funny.
Entered the zone, and I was like "where is the mobs?"
A minutes later they started to fade into view :p
Ran around, cured, raised, got high on Wizard and Giants drinks. They in lots of Bio II for skillups, and some -ga's for fun.
At that point Blizz II was (still is lol) my strongest spell. So I found an unclimed mamool Ja, and did ES + Blizz II with staves and all +INT gear - and it hit it for a dazzling 6 dmg!! I died shortly after. Due to the lag sometimes Im dead in a flick of the screen, wierd.
Lasted about 45 mins, not long, got 1080 exp.

I'm pretty sure that is Mijin Gakure(sp?). Since they are NINs and no other Mamool Ja can use it and I'm pretty sure that's the animation. Why it can do an AoE of 4k+? I don't know.

All the NIN mobs in Dynamis (not just NMs) can do AoE Mijin Gakure, as well as some of the NMs in various CoP Missions (Cryptonberries in 7-4 come to mind).

Yeah, that Mijin is typically why NIN mobs get saved for last. Its great to see one get one off and watch an entire alliance drop to red or zero. Its even better when the Shadow Ring procs and I get hit with it for 0. All that usually means though is that I die last.
Karinya
03-08-2007, 02:14 PM
I'm pretty sure Mijin is *always* aoe, it's just that players don't use it much and when they do they're rarely facing multiple enemies.
Anyway... Carbuncle had one of those no-general wins last night against a level 7 Undead Swarm. It's pretty intense having everyone at the Hall of Binding trying to drag ghosts, qutrub or whatever back outside so it doesn't get too close to the AC. Lamia No. 3 was right there in the square outside the Hall charming dozens of people, but we somehow managed to keep her out of the Hall and kill enough other mobs to force a retreat.
Undead Swarm (at least at level 7) now have these big yellow clockwork-like things, sort of like an automaton the size of a full grown Troll. They're called Acroliths, if I recall correctly, but I didn't see much of their TP moves. And yes, a level 7 besieged that retreats goes back home and immediately has 85 enemy forces. It's too early to tell if that's going to lead to more frequent besiegeds overall.

Someone in my alliance for an upcoming besieged just told us how much time is left until it actually starts....
Was he BSing, or is there a tool somewhere that actually tells you when Besieged is going to happen?
Last I checked, there was a fairly solid calculation for figuring out when it started. Or he could've just had people watching outside.
I don't know if there's a program, but if you could be bothered to time things, it wouldn't be hard to guess.

Another thing that helps people in besieged.
For God's sake, if I see another <pos> I'm going to strangle the person that said it. Those of us whom have not memorized which <pos> goes where will have to open up their map and look up the damn thing to know what area someone is talking about, which is enough time to get killed. Badly.
It's alot more helpful to state the actual location. i.e. Southern Choco area, hall of binding square, stuff to that effect. At least don't make us pull out our maps and scroll all over the damn place just to know where the last remaining general is @.@

/echo <pos> does the same thing in 1 line instead of 2.

"Even a blind pig finds an acorn once in a while."
Not saying that your friend is a blind pig. But 1-for-1 isn't a big enough statistical sampling to show that your friend can exactly predict the start time for Besieged.
Note also that 60 seconds is a large enough window so that an estimate (such as 32 minutes) can appear to be exact rather than simply pretty good. If he told you how much longer in minutes and seconds correctly multiple times, then I might be as impressed as you seem to be.
But then, I'm a skeptic.

But in general I am enjoying Beseiged, Iv now done a few solo and a few in parties.

Now, if some people could kindly go and rescue the free Warp Taru and Chocobo NPC on Bahamut I would greatly appreciate it!!"
I would recommend using the older brother.
Did you know that if you use him enough times, he'll eventually give you a 2nd destination?
Yeah, you're home nation! :)

Lol
I would rather use the free taru than having to keep buying Silver coins, for the sake of a short run from just outside Jeuno. Hell it takes me longer to get through the lag at the AH in WG than to just run it!
Handy to know about the second destination though.

If you have outpost warps unlocked, the pay taru can get you pretty much anywhere in the world in a few minutes.
also, @ 100 ISP per coin, the silver pieces aren't too expensive.

I can buy coins with my IS? Maybe I should get my eyes checked, last time I checked with the guard I could only buy warp scrolls and lambert cells (what are they for??!!)
Hmm, I can even sell them for profit.
And how do I get the pay taru to offer me outpost warps, or is this the same as the 2nd option Eohmer was talking about?

The pay taru doesn't directly offer you outpost teleports. What happens is that after you've used his services 3 times, he'll offer to Teleport you a choice of destinations: Jeuno, or your nation of allegiance. If you pick your nation, you'll wind up right next to the Outpost Teleport NPC, who you can then speak to for an Outpost Teleport.

You don't buy the IS coins from the same guard you get Sanction from. The NPC is somewhat near the mog house, but in that main square. Look up Imperial coins on Wiki to get the name (or I can post it in a minute or so).

I didn't say Outpost Warps. He takes you to the your home nation, i.e. where you are from.
The NPC who sells Imperial Coins is Ugrihd, he's located in Aht Urhgan Whitegate in G-9. He charges Imperial Standing credits instead of gil.
Someone in my alliance for an upcoming besieged just told us how much time is left until it actually starts....
Was he BSing, or is there a tool somewhere that actually tells you when Besieged is going to happen?
Once the beastman army reaches 100 their forces increase at a set rate, they also take a set amount of time to reach Al Zhabi once they set-off (which is different for the 3 armies) so assuming the beastman army was above 100 it wouldn't be too hard to work out.

I mentioned the oupost warping since he drops you off in front of your nation's outpost teleporter.

I was referring to the Outpost Warping part in this thread so I can actually utilise Outpost Warps more often

Ever since my Rank 10 tour I've been unable to get Elshimo Uplands and Kolshushu back for outpost, and those were the 2 I used the most.
It seems I'll have to go buy the regions for windy, that or just move back to Basty after I get M.C. bracelets. :worry:
For some reason Basty always has the areas I outpost the most to.

So I was fighting a Phantasmal Puk during the Mamool Savages Beseiged...
I used Instant Reraise and Gian'ts Drink prior to engaging, and I noticed after a while, both were gone. Is this an ability this mob has, or did my machine glitch somehow and I got the worst end of it?
Edit: Hmm... found this. (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Phantasmal_Puk)
* Uses White Wind: Curaga to nearby allies which restores around 990 HP.
* Uses Ill Wind: AoE Wind damage and Dispel.
* Uses all other standard Puk attacks, but has much higher HP, attack and evasion.
Can it be the above bold?

Update with something I'm sure isnt new but Iv only just seen...
2 attacking at once.
I got into WG, checked /bmap, and saw 2 of them was attacking. Shame I couldnt get in to particpate.
The closest Iv had since was attack -> 30mins(ish?) -> attack
Once a month they should have all 3 attack at once.
Or maybe not since the lag would be dire.

Two different armies will not attack the city at the same time. The late-comers will politely wait oustide the gates of Al Zahbi for the first battle to finish. If the AC is lost in the first fight, then I guess the second group just walks back home?

Besieged tip: if you are experiencing too much lag in one area of Al Zahbi, try moving to a different area.
I've had times where I was in Ulthalam Parade early on during Besieged, and I couldn't even get myself to engage a mob. More recently, I've been trying to spend more of my time around the Chocobo stables or the AH, and lag really hasn't been too much of a problem. I still may not be able to see the other PCs around me, but the mobs and friendly NPCs load quickly enough. So I can effectively find a mob to engage or a General to follow around.
Is there any way to target generals when you can't see them? It's really frustrating when you know a general is near and taking a beating but you can't do anything to help them because they never pop into view.

Doesn't work. I try it all the time, even when I'm sure they're right there and I just saw them ten seconds ago. Changing the camera angle sometimes makes them disappear for a while and then they slowly come back. But the target thing doesn't seem to work on the Generals, at least not successfully for me.
Could be a lag thing - and it probably is - but yeah, it sucks. I would do a lot more General curing if I could ever freaking target them.

If im soloing Besieged Ill run around cure bombing random people for a few converts worth and spend the rest of the time skilling up.
Never once healed a General mwuahaha
Have you tried the /assist command...if you can see someone near you is fighting the General, that then targets it for you, doesnt lock on unless you write it into a macro, but targets him.
LyonheartLakshmi
04-27-2007, 09:24 AM
The /target command never works with specifically naming an NPC. Otherwise, you could set up your NM-claim macro as...
/target "Leaping Lizzy"
/ja "Provoke" <t>
It don't work :P
I'm pretty sure /assist will work with an NPC's name. Just don't forget the double quotes. And good luck with the spelling of the General's name.
Actually what I was suggesting was if you see a specific person near you that is whaling on the general, quickly type /assist david. This then targets whoever david is whaling on and gives you the target you were looking for.

So, you mean one of the Beastmen generals, as opposed to one of the five Serpent Generals?
If david was whaling on General Zazarg, I'd have to assume he was charmed, and I don't think I'd want to assist him ;)
Mobs seem to load much faster than PCs and other NPCs. I wouldn't be surprised if the game gives priority to loading up mobs, to make sure you aren't getting beaten on by an invisible foe. I don't think I've ever had problems seeing (and targetting) Beastmen NMs in Besieged.

The game gives priority to mobs, then party members, then everyone else I think. The members of my party always seem to appear before everyone else.
