Ice Ring

I'm looking for some advice. I have a little dilemma, if you want to call it that.

I have done two Trial by Ice fights. The first I chose the ability to summon Shiva, the second I'm not sure what to do. I was debating whether I should get the Ice Ring or just save the whisper for Fenrir. I don't plan leveling SMN much until after I hit BLM75. And we all know how easy it will be to get in Avatar fights as BLM75. :biggrin:

Someone in my LS was getting the summons for an alternate character, and they said "Hag, you need Shiva?"

I went along, figuring that I'd just get a head start on Fenrir. Fight went great, BRD75/NIN37 tank ftw!

But lately, I've been thinking that I may want to get the Ice Ring. It looks like a pretty good swap-in for Ice Day, when I get to 65.

What does everyone else think?

i would not get it... it will sit in your mog house collecting dust.

The amount of MP you lose is vast, and if elemental skill is what you are interest in - I'd advise get a Shamans Cloak. You will need some help to camp the NM tho.

Oh, there's no doubt that I want the Shaman's Cloak. But I don't even have a Moldy yet. It's hard getting help for that stuff. I guess I just have to keep asking my LS everyday. I haven't been doing that.

Its a nice ring but its only use is if your getting resisted bad on ice day, and this would save you move mp then you lose because if your getting half resisted your wasting about 75 mp at level 65 so if it allows you to get 2 less resisted nukes before you rest again then its worth it (15% of my mp at lvl 60 as taru blm is 150).

If your doing another shiva run just to help a friend and have the summon and the wisper already then i would chose the ice ring but otherwise its probably not worth the effort for a ring you can only use 1/8 of the time.

I wasn't paying attention, I thought it said -15 MP. I definitely don't want it if its -15% MP. Yikes!

Well let's think about this for a moment..

I imagine the underlying question is whether an Ice Ring provides the same unmentioned boost to Ice-based spells that an Ice Staff does. That probably would require some investigation and/or testing, but I think it just might be the case.

As far as the usefulness in using them opposed to MP rings, I've learned that once a party starts going it's a good idea to switch from MP gear to INT/Elemental/MA Skill & Bonus gear because it simply provided a bigger boost to the damage your spells can do.

Is it worth it? I'm not sure. Is it worth the investment and the extra inventory space? I'm not sure. Is it worth a try? Definetly.

I'll try it if I get someone begging me to help with a Shiva fight. I'll turn in the whisper and go.

Oh, I never bother with MP rings in exp parties as BLM. INT all the way.

I have the ring. It's not that great. It's been sitting in my mog house forever, collecting dust now.


We BLM already get a lot of help with skill+ and acc+ end game. We are hardly ever resisted under normal circumstances. Only in a handful of HNMs fight will you relaly need that much ACC... (Althought fighting Kirin on an iceday is gonna be so much pain)


I'd say get the pact first, get fenrir orb second, maybe rust-be-gone for mama mia if you plan to level smn, and just take the gils there on.
