View Full Version : Brenner: Why so empty?

As a fun little LS thing, we decided to have a brenner match. We all had fun, and there were good feelings abound. Now, I think the Brenner island is beautiful, and quite a few of my LS members agree. I've taken to coming out here to craft :D. What I don't under stand, though, is why it seems nobody ever plays Brenner. Like I said, my friends and I all had a great deal of fun, and the zone is beautiful. And yet, I've never come into the Brenner Isle during an official match and seen other people in it, and I've only once seen another registered match. WTF is up with the rest of Vana'diel, I guess my question is :P

From my view, it's not as enjoyable or simple as Ballista. Also those annoying voking and stunning mini MG grow tiring to avoid/kill.

What's brenner?

Well, to be honest, we never really played the game itself. We took it as more of a chance to just pound on each other on the beach :D.

What's brenner?

is the responce i normally see, if i mention it.

I like brenner. i managed to get in on a couple of official matches early on (only three aside) but havn't been able to play since.
Official matches are very Euro unfriendly (timing wise 1pm and 3 am), and unofficial matches aren't always doable if you LS isn't interested.

Honestly i think most people still aren't aware of it. It hasn't got NPC's in every city, it doesn't take place in zone people run through like ballista does. It's one dude stood in upper jeuno. Everyone is at least aware of balista even if they don't partake, because it's everywhere. Even in the first couple of days after release, when trying to organise an unoffical match, even though it dominated release notes, most peoples responce was "What's Brenner?"

What's brenner?

Hahahaha, I'm always right.

Why am I not surprised coming out of you?

Brenner is empty because the following three reasons: (a, low-levels only want to become high-level and richer; (b, high-levels only want gear or more merit/hour ratio; or (c, low and high levels don't even know what it is, some of who think they can talk to other people as if they have any knowledge of the game.

a and b can be solved if PvP in general was more interesting, with both rewards and system/job balancing. c is just flat out ignorance, which can be solved with education of the matter.

When Brenner first came out, there were people there for every single match for a few weeks. I'd go there and it'd be full, me and a friend would try and team up people, I'd distract them and he'd shoot them from far back, it was all fun and everything...but then pretty much we went back to leveling and we just kinda forgot about it...now pretty much, I try and enter official matches, but no one is ever there like stated above...and my LS just uses it as a chance to beat on eachother without too much distraction or wasting of Ballista Points

Brenner > Ballista

I enjoy PvP in FFXI, even though they have toned down damages in so many ways, its still fun to run aorund and kill/get killed. Most seem to think that PvP is broken in FFXI.

Ballista is summarized with *Gang the weakest player on the other team, then go score.*

Brenner is more dynamic in that you have to worry less about killing people and work towards the goal of capturing Brenner Flames and holding onto them. If your team just tries to kill everyone youll find your Flames disappearing.

Ive noticed most PvP has been ignored since the new content came out. I think most people would rather Assault, Beseiged, Meripo, etc with Ballista/Brenner falling dead last. Also since those things are more widely advertised and accessible at anytime, Ballista/Brenner are more restrictive on their public schedule so people are not going to wrap their time around going to either of these. This applies to private matches since you cannot reserve the Brenner Island when a public match is going on.

If PvP was more widely advertised, opened up more, and made more accessible then I think more people would take an interest.

Maybe he thinks sarcasm is a big hole in the ground somewhere.

No need to start a fuss over it. Carry on.

If that was just a Tim Gunn quote that came out of your keyboard, I think I may be in love :).

I agree. I didn't even know Brenner had official matches and reserving unofficial matches seemed very confusing to me. This is one area where SE really needs to learn from Blizzard. Even Ballista is a major pain in the ass with the multiple level caps and scheduled matches that nearly always get cancelled anyway.

WoW's Battlegrounds system is very popular because it's so accessible. You just place yourself in one or more BG queues and new instanced games are automatically started in the various BGs as long as there are enough people in the queues. You just have to be in a town to place yourself in a queue and when a game starts you can choose to be teleported into the game instance from anywhere in the game world.

FFXI PvP is empty/unpopular for 2 very important reasons:

1. Class imbalance
2. Lack of worthwhile rewards

Look into WoW PvP rewards to see what I mean.

Brenner, no one i know that loves doing PVP talks about it much if at all. Ballista is like the orginal classic thing. In the end, 30, 60 and uncapped ballista is more where i see ppl showing up. As for the ganging up on weakest memeber thing, oi, i got a story on that >>; lvl8 monk mithra <.<; Pashowmarshlands and Meriphed Mountians can you say easy time for opposing teams? v.v And it's not always the weakest member >>; Monks are first to keeeelll list <.< >.>; espically with an army of rabid tarus that won't stay and fight when they could win doing so >.<

Brenner is extremely enjoyable. Especially when you have a LS that's willing to fight against another LS.

Fun stuff. Very hillarious to see 15+ galka getting slaughtered by postons

As far as the PVP goes, unless you're getting points or some kind of incentive (Which most players always seem to lean towards...) should be thoughtful and challenging. Brenner is all about teamwork....just like the other features on FFXI.

Incentives/rewards should, by no means, determine whether or not PVP is worthwhile. All in all, if you're up for a fun challenge with people who are willing to put their skills to the test, then this is perfect.

The funny thing is you get more xp for doing brenner than ballista 3x more infact.
And the game is more stratigic and intresting >.>
SE just did a terrible job of making it accesable.

Yeah. It's not as accessible as Ballista.

But not a whole lot is required to participate in an official match either.

Ballista requires a license.
Brenner doesn't.

Wait, are you actually saying WoW PvP is balanced?

Don't think so. Think it was more of a point concerning incentives to participate in PVP.

I got sucked into Brenner one night, and it was the most fun I've had in game in a really long time.

Was damn near 3AM when a LS member basically peer pressured me into going. I figured I'd fall asleep 10 minutes in, and just apologize the next day. Next thing I knew it was 6AM and I was asking when we'd be going again.

We did 4 on 4. 2 RNGs, 2 RDMs, PLD, THF, BLM, and SMN. 2 RNGs went head up a few times, PLD and THF seemed to have something against each other (lol) and the RNG on the other team seemed to be head hunting... MINE! Every time I looked up I saw him Barrage me, and he EES me TWICE! (Thank goodness for Blink, he missed both EES!)

All 8 of us had a helluva time and wanted to go again, but none of us have gone from what I can tell. I've tried to get other people interested, just nobody bites.

I can't compare this to Ballista since I've never done Ballista. Just never felt like learning the system. (Read: lazy.) I've watched some Ballistas. I've seen BRD and THF parties destroy people in Jugner. Lullaby, then watch the THFs take turns SATA Viper Biting anything the BRD can put to sleep. Maybe one day I'll actually give it a try.
