Hi,
I am about to create a new character, with the aim of becoming a Galka Corsair in the long term.
Here are a few questions I have...
1. Do Galka's make decent Corsairs?
2. What would the best sub be?
3. Should I start as WAR?
Thanks

1. Sure.
2. RNG would be the best, followed by NIN. As a Galka though, I think I would go with the acc. and r.acc. of RNG and forget the shadows. You're a big boy, you can take a stray hit on a pull.
3. Sounds good, I would use that as a sub for leveling RNG. Only problem is you'll need somthing to sub from 18 to 30 before you even open RNG. Maybe start as MNK, at 18 open sub-jobs, take WAR/MNK to 30, go RNG/WAR from there, then COR/RNG.

Even though I'm not a big /NIN fan for COR, its applications for RNG, even if both are just levelled as support jobs for COR, should not be ignored.
I personally love the RNG/WAR combo on my RNG and prefer it over /NIN, but its best to keep your options open and have /NIN levelled, too. Ranged Accuracy bonus + Dual Wielding Archers is a huge bonus for RNG. This really helps Galka and Elvaan who find themselves lacking in accuracy and makes their strength felt.
As for why I don't like /NIN on COR, its just not like how it is with RNG/NIN, COR has no native Accuracy Bonus and you're basically putting your money on the ranged accuracy bonuses from dual wielding archers instead. COR/RNG gets the Accuracy Bonus trait from RNG and gets more Ranged Accuracy from that trait and a single Archer's Knife than /NIN could provide.
Galka make good CORs. Support classes such as COR and BRD don't really even need to concern themselves with the race issue. In fact, the race issue is pretty much a dead one, I had a Galka SMN and Tarutaru PLD in my PT last night, they both peformed their jobs well.
So its really not about the race, just the player, their subjob, their gear and how well they utilize those factors.

This is good advice. I kind of gave you the "get there quick" method, but it's always good to have all helpful avenues accessible. If you were only taking RNG to 37 for subbing anyway, you would only need to take NIN to 18. That's not a ton of work to do to make yourself more flexible.

Well, its not really just that, there's the bigger picture too. Back when CoP wasn't out, people didn't do much besides get a subjob to 37, but now, a lot of people will take a job to 40 just for the 40 caps for CoPs as well, sometimes even taking them to 50. Another benefit to this is having a job prepared for BCNMs.
It may seem like more "work" for some people, but ultimately, you'll have better options available to you if you have other jobs prepped and ready to go. Its alsobeen my experience that the people that stick to one job tend to be a group's weakest link, especially where CoPs and BCNMs are concerned.

Sure. It's good to get several jobs to useful levels for things other than just subbing. That's kind of a more general suggestion for his/her whole FFXI career. I got a feeling of impatience and anxiety to get started from the OP, so I kind of just "taught to the test." Maybe I should have been more in depth.

Very interesting (and somewhat mind-blowing) advice, thank you very much.
I'm just levelling my Galka WAR now, got to level 10 so far. It'll be a while before I reach 30 so I'll look back at your advice at that time. Thanks again.
