You get a new set of gear at level 8 that you can buy and wear. It looks nice, in my opinion.

Other than that, just follow the general rule for equipment on MNK:
ATK + ACC + Haste > STR > anything else. (Enmity reducing gear can be useful, depending on your situation. They'll only really start showing up in significant amounts at level 50 for MNK though.)

By the time you get to levels where you might want exceptions to that, you'll probably be able to figure it out for yourself. (Like federation kyahan vs dune boots.)

Although, strictly wearing equipment that gives you the best damage will make you look terrible sometimes. (Wearing a level 25 subligar to the highest levels of the game... If you're a male character you might claw your eyes out after a while.)

Thanks, I assume I shouldn't be partying for a while?

I was planning on soloing to 10, then getting PT's till level 18?

That is what you should do. Solo till 10-12 then party through dunes. After dunes you will need an escort, to help to Jeuno, unless you know the way and buy "prizm powders" and "silent oils". Then you can travel the long road solo. If you are just going MNK to sub another job, then you can stop at 18. The Sub-job quest is in Selbina if you didn't know, and you will most likely be able to get 2 of the 3 items you need from some of the mobs you fight. the Magiked Skull, you will prolly need help with.
Happy hunting ^^

http://ffxi.somepage.com/ will help you out a lot here with looking up gear you need as you progress.

And a tip. If you want to avoid a bit of frustration, hold off on grouping until maybe 14ish or so. Then you can get in on Valkurm parties just as they are moving away from the really terrible nooby areas of the zone, and into the areas that have the mobs you need for your subjob quest items.

At early lvls, focus on your ACC mostly. lvl14 Battle Gloves will last you a long time even on a slim budget. Eating Rice Dumplings adds ACC and Attack, great food that can last you into 50 i believe.

You'll find that every swing-cycle a monk lands takes a large percentage of the mob's HP, so make sure those hits land!

Have fun.

I soloed the road to jueno without ever being in rolanberry or passhow before that , as long as you have the map its easy enough just stay away from anything that looks like it wants to eat your face. (Also i didn't bother with prism powders or silent oils)

In my Linkshell 3 years, my LS memebers had a race for running from Bastok to Jenuo using level 1 job naked (without and gear, food or tools). Boy that was fun :wasted:
