Um I had the same problem also... it always said disk read error even if the game is new ^^, I then went to my local video game shop and changed the lens on it cost me about 40 bucks then 2 months later the same thing happened again. SO I bought a new Ps2 the only tip I can give you is don't keep your ps2 dusty it can get messed up

Drizzt I know exactly what to do..believe me this has already happened to me. Ok if you are getting DRE (Disc Read Error) if you have the warrenty still you can go back to the place you bought your PS2 and get another for free but if not then you will have to pay another $200 (Like I did). Cleaning your PS2 doesn't work I have also tried that...took it into the shop and they opened up and cleaned..I went home played a few games all was good till a week later started up again..so before FFXI comes out in the US you might want to replace your PS2. Just dont go and replace the lens^^ or dont clean it just buy or a new one or trade in for another.

Man i fell your pain. I bought a ps2 on release date and 4 months later it crapped out on me. SOny wanted to chrarge me 170 canadain to fix the prob. It sat idly on my shelf till a few months later when i took it upon my self to clean the lens. I took it apart and used a lil isopropyl alcohol (99%) on it and it worked flawlessly for months. Howver this problem came up again and i cleaned it again. Several cleanings later and it finally died and i bought anothe one.

My nicname is drem, disc read error man!

I had this exact same problem (as many others have said) and this is what I did to solve it. I took the PS2 apart and compeltely cleaned it out (this includes the lens part of the PS2). The problem was an excess amount of dust. After I had did this I didn't have any disc read errors for at least 4-5 months. Then, when the error comes up again I simply do the same thing I did before -- clean it. I hope this helps. ^^

edit: The main problem I had was a rather large dustbunny on the lens of the PS2.

I bought a air cleaner so my room gets no dust because thats has to be the main reason

Yeah, those early PS2's had a lot of problems. My cousin got one before me on release and it broke. He called about how to fix it and with all the shipping he'd of had to do and the actual fixing it would cause cost almost as much as he paid for it. Luckily it only got DRE on non-dvd discs (the blue colored backs) and plus I have my own that's flawless
