What would be good for a ninja? Ninja/Thief or Ninja/Monk
How about Samurai? War/Sam maybe?
Anyhoot I cant decide which of the two to be Samurai or Ninja :(

I was thinking the same thing. However we barely have any info on either of the two jobs. Anyone got ability list or something?

I think Samurai are mean to be Renkei masters. I will try them out for sure. I saw one in game today, and it had a really good sword for level 1. I want to see the damage of the future weapons the job gets. If you didn't know yet, the requirement for the expansion jobs is level 30.

From what I have read... Samurais have TP charging abilitys as well as Anti Demon abilities. Ninjas have special spells with item requirements. They have Dual wield so they can use 2 1handed weapons and they can also Self Destruct to do Final damage to the enemy if they know they are about to die anyway. ( seems like a good way to avoid exp loss.... when you get close to death, just blow up )
I was thinking DRK/Ninja or Ninja/DRK would be a good choice seeing how Ninjas get dual wield and Dark Knights have high attack, you would be doing mad melee damage with 2 weapons and all those damage skills n stuff.

yeah in the FF games, Ninja have always done a little more damage.
If you plan to be soloing and wanting some weapon damage with some magic effects, and a "self destruct" move for the group which is nice, sacrificing almost all your HP (think you only go to 1 HP not actually die) go with Ninja
Want to do some nice weapon damage that can be chained for a good renkei then go with Samurai.
Is samurai the only job that can wield a katana?

I would think so....I doubt a ninja could use a katana right. O_o
Then again, I have no clue.

usually yeah, only Samurai can. However...
Ninja use "ninja swords" or "knives" which are similar to a Katana, with a straight edge.

i was wondering since this is ninja/samurai discus. do ninjas wield there weapons with there blade stickin foward or backwards cus i saw the live cam and it showed a ninja he had 2 shord swords or something and he was holding them backwards

Ninjas have MP. Ninja/mage combos are thus viable. Speculate away

what about just going Ninja/Samurai as a comb
i think that would be fun
i will go for ninja too ;) well ninja/monk since ninja already got good dodge why not add a little hp to it so it can take some hits :) so thats what i will do if i were u:thumbsup:

In real life there were several styles. In the game, I think it depends on the weapon, I have seen screenshots of ninjas with it both ways.

There is no "bad" class in FFXI, so being a Ninja is still a safe bet, plus the fact from thier skills they already seem bad ass. All the expansion jobs i know will be great already, so you dont need to worry about Ninja not being good enough. Has there been a FF game yet where Ninjas havent kicked ass?
hehe you're right...ninjas were always what could be of a mix between dark knight, thief and black mage...then if you want to emphasis any of those classe's abilities you choose them as your second job ;) I think also that samurai/ninja would make a good combo  imagine a samurai with high dex and some black magic...hehe...pretty interesting....

I don't know. I was thinking SAM/DRK or DRK/SAM. Just like someone said earlier on, Samurais are Renkei masters and have TP charging abilities. That should help a little..... Then again i don't know enough about SAM.
DRK= Kamakaze and well... thats kinda it ><
SAM= ??? and Renkei Masters
hmmm....

The thing is Advanced jobs dont usually make a good subclass. They make great Main jobs, but when subbing you lose pretty much everything that makes them special.
Also we dont know if Ninjas will use black magic, but if you have it subbed, that black magic will be too weak to make a diffrence :p though they usually have something not far from it, like throwing elemental type attacks. but keep in mind to think how if its subbed, the class already is at half the level of your main, so even if it was a pure Black Mage, it would be spells that wont do much damage to a creature that you would be fighting at this level. Well also take into account the LESSER amount of magic and power behind it because of your hybrid nature. This leaves you with magic that will make some nice effects, but little else. This goes true for most Advanced jobs.
Your best choice is to use a basic job as a sub
Ninja/Thief i think is the classic combo there.
Samurai/Warrior works too.
You dont have to follow these, im just saying they make alot more sence in battle.

Mithra, Ranger / Samurai
Samurai's TP charging type skills would benefit the Weapon abilities for my main job Ranger
what are the players views on Samurai being a sub for Ranger?

hi, i'm new to the board and oddly enough picked this to be my first post lol. Anywho I just noticed that someone said "there are no bad jobs" well from what I've been reading and the info I've gathered it seems that the beast master got shafted. No one wants to PT with them so I hear and I was thinking of making one but now i'm gonna go Elvann Ranger/Warrior or something like that.

DRK/Ninja looks like an interesting combo. Dual swords with heavy attack power, plus you can hit twice for Blood Weapon (I'd think). You'd have a little better evasion though it wouldn't do much for your defense.
SAM/WAR sounds like a really good combo to me.
I'd stick to keeping advanced jobs as main jobs though, since that is when they are the most effective.
My Starting Job is going to be Samurai and my sub job Monk to get that extra HP...

Yea I plan on being a samurai cuz they can use pimp katanas and are renkei mastas muhahahah. Haven't thought of a sub job yet tho thinking ninja.....

Beastmasters arent really bad, i dont think.
If i saw one i would pick them for my party ina second, they are very valuable if you ask me.
And subbing samurai for TP is good, but you dont get thier Level 1 ability as a sub, so your only getting thier passive ability of charging TP not thier level 1 ability to do so.
And Dwim, do you mean 2 Drk swords? that wont work Drks use 2 handed swords, a Ninja can only dual wield 1 handed swords, otherwise things would be far unbalanced. but im probably misunderstanding. (now taht i re-read it i dont think thats what you were saying, but might as well not delete it in case anyone was thinking you could. i think you were just pointing out the high attack Darks get with the 2 sword ability would be great, and i agree)
I just hope the Samurai's don't have armor I hope they have light clothing like robes

I myself was thinking that the ninjitsu magic would be status affects such as: poison, slow, hast, bio and stuff like that note i have absolutely no facts, but those types of spells seem like ninja magic.
as for which class i will be ninja/thief
and about the post about samurai and robes i would definitely not count on have u seen pictures of real samurai? they where big err no HUGE bamboo armor(ya kinda wierd huh)
Sorry but in FFXI samurais wear armors...I wonder about the females though....

yeah, just cause kenshin is called a "samurai" technically he wasnt a feudal land owner, lol :p, but yes his style of fighting was the samurai type of style. And no, Samurai in this game are wearing real samurai-type armor, and most warrior armor. So far no pics of any training uniforms like you are talking about have been shown.
I do get kind of tired of people wanting to make a kenshin rip off in the game, so sorry if i ever sound mean about it liek now :p

MMM i am gonna go reverse on this one here I think thief/ ninja might rock mightily teh thief already has a high damage factor and ninjas usually have as well then add in the dual weilding superio to the thiefs but they would probably die if the moster were to sneeze on them:eek:

To me i think it's al good both are good jobs and can work well with other jobs for pluses and minuses. I am so glad they put in the ninja and samurai classes. I might try out both jobs or make two characters.

Not sure but i think it depends on both weapon and attack...if you watch this video closely, the ninja in there looks as though it switches from backwards to forwards, then backwards again...either that or it's just the camera angle  Anyway, they show him about 25% of the way through the video...it's hard to tell cause he does it so fast...but watch his right hand weapon, he swings twice then it looks like he flips it around and swings it forward!?
 Anyway, you be the judge:

well I have ideas that I'm stuck on (ya the game comes out in a while but whatever)
Paladin/warrior (leaning toward this and the dark knight)
Dark Knight/monk
Samurai/ninja
Dragoon/redmage(the Dragoon job sounds too popular so probably not)
These are all the jobs that would be fun IMO
I will probably be the Paladin or Darknight because it's nice to be a tank or a really strong character. :)
But the samurai ninja combo seems cool too because of duel wield and ninjitsu/tp recharge. (wishes this game was out)

Samurai/Ninja for dual wield wouldnt do you any good, seeing as Samurai use Katana's, and tahts a 2 handed weapon.

Oh, then I'll probably be a Dark Knight ( I was planning to do this anyway).
Thanks for the info.
Are all katanas for FFXI considered two hand swords? It kinda depends on the users fighting style whether they use two hands or one, but its a game so I guess limits are to be expected...

To get the full effect of a Katana, you are gonna use 2 hands with it. However, one of the most powerful strikes with a katana uses only one hand, but thats a very hard move to pull off, also it might be a Renkei or such. One thing that dissapoints me, is they use the same animation for the regular 2 handed swords, when a Katana needs much diffrent handeling to be at its full effect.
and yes no MMORPG to date gives you the choice of styles to fight with, with the weapon, they are all just defaulted one way.
...in the new weapons guide or whatever they have listed both one handed katanas and two handed ones so could it be possible now?

Is it just me or do the in game ninjas not look like ninjas??? I pictured long scarfs covering the mouths and noses and alot of dark baggy clothing and katanas!!! where are the katanas!!! Ninjas always use katana I agree that samurai do too but ninjas shopuld definatley be using them too I know fro sure that I want to be a Ninja/Shadowknight and I use to toy with being Ninja/Blackmage but still THEY DONT LOOK LIKE NINJAS!!!!:(
The outfit that your thinking of could be some sort of AF armor...and ninjas don't use katanas by what I remember. They use much shorter swords called wakiyashis(SP?) and or kunais and shurikens....and many other weapons and tools that just go on and on...

You are wrong. Ninja's do not wear baggy clothes. They wear clothes that fit to their body more. This is so they make less noise and so they can be more agile. It is harder to move around with baggy clothes. Harder to run and jump and climb. Also, ninjas do not use katanas. Kensai
05-06-2003, 01:30 PM
yeah, thats just a really stereotypical ninja outfit. They didnt even wear black. They mostly wear dark shades of brown and green so that they would blend in with trees and stuff. They also werent that agile, for example they wouldnt be running through the castle. They were extremely slow so that they would not make noise and get caught and if they did they usually just killed themselves eventually.
Are shinobi and ninjas different...I was reading a book and they had seperate sections but it could just be the different styles...becuase shinobi jutsu and ninjutsu were seperated and very different
Most ninja actually did not skulk around in the dark waiting to assasxxxxte someone like many may people think. Ninja were masters of disgues they would rather kill someone i.e merchant, Taoist monk, or military advisor to get close to their target.
As for samurai most samurai did not wear armor though there swords never left their sides(for a sword was the samurai's soul. Armor was mainly worn during large scaled battles or duels which they washed before either of the two. It was not very conceivable for someone to work on a farm (as many samurai did) in full battle dress.

You can't really make these generalizations, over history, Samuarai played many roles. I am going to rant and rave now!
Most samurai are based on warring states era (~1000-1400 bc... more or less) and in this period samurai government was based out of 'bakufu' or 'tent government' as these guys were usually in the field, and ready for war. So these guys would usually be armed/armored.
At the end of this, samurai were assimilated into the imperial lifestyle, and started wearing fancy silks and kimonos, wrote poetry and rarely fought, but practiced alot.
By the end of the era of Samurai, samurai were so broke that they were basically glorified goons and bums. It was always illegal for samuarai to farm, they recieved a stipend from the government to survive
So there were lots of Samurai, but the real point is THEY NEVER FARMED !!! And they always liked their swords alot, but these aren't necessarily katanas, any style of sword they liked, really, just so long as they always had one, since the fact that the person was wearing the sword was what made the class distinction (at the end of samurai reign, many samurai even wore empty sheathes, as they had sold their swords).
Certainly a long and sordid... history...

Samurai's were actually afraid of ninja's. Because samurai's lived by their code (I think its called "Bushido"), they were always restricted in their methods of fighting. They were a kind of cave man warrior : confront enemy head on and bash them in the face. They beleived that any other way of combat was dishonorable and unnacceptable. Ninja's on the other hand, weren't confined to "codes" so they were much more feared and so much more intelligent. In fact, a lot of samurai's were afraid of ninja's because of their reputation. Everybody thought ninja's possessed supernatural powers and thus a lot of people were scared shitless of them. NINJAS WILL TAKE OVER THE WORLD. MWUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA..
