I've been looking at ffxi for quite a while now. Getting verry borred with WoW. But I have a few questions for those of you playing now.

1. How hard of a time would i have starting just now. ie most of the player base has been playing for a year or two. Would the starter areas be dead, and I have no one to learn the game from?

2. I have heard, that rather than the billing starting from the date you sign up, you are billed on the first of every month. Is this true? And if so, if i pick up the game today and register does that mean i would only have from the 26 - 31st of free game time?

3. How is the population in game atm? Not really interested in starting in on a game that is headed down hill already.

1. There are constantly people leveling low level jobs. Starting is easier than ever.

2. You are billed on the first. You get 30 days free. At the end of your 30 days payment is prorated, but only for that one month. After that, first onry.

3. The population is good. 3k or more per server online at any one time.

I actually picked up the game not too long ago, and I have to say that while there is a learning curve involved, it's IS pretty easy to pick up this game. The starter areas are certainly not dead, as Murphie mentioned, high-leveld players often decide to level new jobs anyways, so they have to start from scrath like everyon else.

The population is pretty good, I've never found it to be too crowded, and even in the wee hours of the morning there's folks online.

Also, it's mad fun!

Would i have to pick up all 3 expansions right off the bat? Or would the package game they have for 19.99 be plenty?

Not sure what the new expansion is called.

1. Because you don't have to remake a character to change jobs, a lot of people level up lower level jobs all the time. It actually gets 'harder' to acquire parties as you level up. Of course, that all depends on what job you picked.

2. I, personally, still don't understand how SE does this. :S

3. 'Cause the game is connected world wide, there is no time of the day the population dies off. Even the lowest pop servers have 3k on at a time.

You don't have to pick up all three expansions at one time, If the bundle that you are speaking of is the one the has the game and the first 2 expansions (RoZ and CoP) then sure pick that up, it will keep you busy for a long time.

No, your card will either be charged 31 days from today (middle of August) for the rest of August, or on the 1st of September for the rest of August + September. I believe the latter, but I'm not 100% sure.

Note, about the starter areas: the things you would "learn" from people there might not be terribly accurate.

So if i go buy the game today. I can play till the 31'st.. then my card will get charged?Yes. However, your card will only be charged a fraction of the monthly charge from August 26-31 because you get 30 days free. When Sept 1 comes, you will be charged the full fee for Sept 1-30.

No, your card will either be charged 31 days from today (middle of August) for the rest of August, or on the 1st of September for the rest of August + September. I believe the latter, but I'm not 100% sure.Your trial will last for 30 days, then your card will get charged on the first of the month after your 30 days has ended. So september 1st i believe. Someone correct me if i am wrong.both not correct. see above.

should i worry about getting on a good server? or just go with what ever is assigned?

I guess the only way to avoid this would be to have someone that is on a server they like a lot to get me a word pass?

I don't think you really have to worry about what server you're on. If you want to choose for yourself, you can look at the server forums here. That would give you at least an idea about what's going on on each server.
