Greetings,

After a 2 years break, I think of coming back into the game. However, I do not plan to play a lot of jobs, so I would like to focus on a job that's worth it. What do I mean by a job that's worth it ? Well my primary goal is to see the entire story in FFXI (like zilart, promathia and the new expansion) so I would like to know if there's a job that can be popular to every parts of the story, including expansion packs. The job I prefer are, Paladin, Red Mage and Summoner, are these any good ?

In order to conclude, I would like to thank you for reading this post and for replying to it. Please excuse my english, it is my secondary language.

Thanks in advance !!

Red Mage sounds like a good choice for you. You will get invites easier than many other jobs, and you have easy access to sneak/invis/stoneskin/etc, which will make some missions and quests a bit easier or cheaper for you. Of course, read about the red mage and make sure it is something you think you will like.

And your English is very good.

In terms of popular jobs, go with blm or rdm.

of the jobs you listed, I'd say most likely to be viable in the storying line missions, in order of most frequentlly use to least frquetnly... RDM > SMN > PLD

Thank you all for your input, I appreciate it. What I'm afraid of, is leveling a job that isn't needed in some situations. I've heard that paladin as a tank isn't a good option in some of the promathia area.

As mog said, BLM is a nice choice, but unfortunately I doesn't really like this class. It is a good class, it's just not my favorite gameplay.

I do also think RDM is a good option, however, do you guys know if SMN is accepted in promathia and other parts of the story ? I heard they were good for the bosses fights, so they can be invited.

Anyway, I thanks you guys for your answer, let's discuss some more ! :)

Just a warning, post-40 RDM as a job changes from Melee/Healer/DD to strictly support, except in some situations. Make sure you are comfortable leveling a support job first.

That said, RDM is an excellent choice. Pre 40(41?), they are not that popular, and you will have trouble getting invited to the first three promithia missions. Post 40, they become immensely popular, and will zip through Promithia, Ziliart, and Aht Urgan, as well as the orrigional rank missions, but still enjoying it. And if it becomes to fast pased, you can slow down.

Summoner is decent for all of the Promithia, Ziliart, and most of the Aht Urgan missions. Not as popular as RDM, but they work very well. Note that it IS an advanced job, and though you can play it at 30, you cannot unlock it's true potential untill you have either Summoner or another job 60+

Paladin is a really fun job to play. I have not met anyone who dosn't like playing paladin. And they are very good. But for some stupid reason, 80% of the playerbase is "NIN orny!"

Yes, I hear you Onionsoldier. I was a paladin before I quit and this job is awesome, I think it's still my favorite one, but for some missions (especially promathia) people tend to prefer ninja.

Anyway, if I choose RDM, I'm aware of what I'll have to do in the parties. Post refresh, I'll become a *refresh bot* and I'll have to backup heal while watching for any dispellable buffs on the ennemy. As for the first promyvions missions, at worst I can go in as one of my rdm sub (blm or whm).

I'll probably go high enough to get the summons and then play as a SMN... Well, I said that I do not want to play a lot of jobs... I don't take the easiest way if I go all trough this
