Do you have to pay a mnthly fee like WoW or something?

I already play Guildwars and am getting a little bored from beating it so many times, so I want another game that is still free but fun.

FFXI charges a monthly fee of $12.95 for your first character and an additional $1 for any other (completely unnecessary) characters.

I thought it was $12.50 plus one dollar for every extra character...

Anyway, the only reasons you would want extra characters is for storage (VERY useful for packrats like myself) or if you have another character on another server, and I know people like that.

And by the way, I believe every online game has a monthly subscription. I believe there are some where you can buy a certain amount of time of service and purchase more when you want it, too, kinda like magazine subscriptions. If you don't like monthly subscriptions then find an RPG, MMORPGs simply aren't for you.

Oh now that I think of it there is a free online RPG, but you might or might not be able to get on when you want to. Their servers have quite a low capacity, and you can only get infinite access if you pay for it. http://www.battleon.com However it's not online in the "interact with other people" sense. It's online as in you get to play on your computer. I haven't played it much so I can't tell you how much fun it is, but eh, it's better than nothing.

Well, actually, there's quite a few free MMO's. However, for the most part, they suck.

Guild Wars is a free MMORPG but they make a lot of their money with people purchasing the game (and any expansions) which are all full price. This is in contrast to most expansion packs which are usually sold at a discounted or lower rate.

Guild Wars isn't an MMO. Their network and server overhead is a tiny fraction of what a true MMO uses.

Also, you do know that selling your characters and being involved in RMT of any kind is highly frowned upon by the FFXI playerbase, right?

RMT is frowned upon by FFXI (and most MMO) players because of the effect is has on their enjoyment of the game. I don't even know if Runescape has an economy; the game seems ancient and crude compared to FFXI, lol. I played it for a few days and I have to say textbased games > Runescape. But yea, people sell diablo II accounts for a good sum of money as well, but it has no effect on the game itself so no one cares. The only people affected by it are those dumb enough to actually pay for something that's free.

Also, Guild Wars was originally free to play after purchase, but I think the expansion has a monthly subscription fee. I didn't play it long enough to buy the expansion so I don't know.:worry:
