Friends advice?

Howdy FFXI community. Im very new to final fantasy and i got some advice froma friend on how to make money after ive done some leveling. He says i should harvest materials and sell at the "auction house" for regular to low prices and i can make quick amounts of money. Nothing big but enough to get me buy. Is this a good way? sorry if this is so obvious, im really new here. Thanks to anyone that answers :)
