I've leveled my taru ranger up to 11 and its been sitting there for a few months, was wondering once I party, do I engage the mob after I pull? Or should I just stand there and shoot arrows/bolts/bullets at it? Looked on the ranger forums here and didn't really see an answer so thought I'd post.

You should engage, but stay out of melee range. You cannot use ranged weapon skills unless you've engaged (unfortunately).
How far you stay out of melee range depends on the weapon you use. Check the recent topic about guns vs xbows vs bows, Caspian lists the approximate places to stand with each weapon.
you have to enter battle mode if that's what you mean. Without being in battle mode you can't use WS. You don't have, and shouldn't, stand up close to the mob tho. Just stay at distance and shoot. At least with the new system anyway.

If you are trying to max out the damage potential then you'll want to get a decent distance away, engage the mob (You're melee weapon won't attack, out of range) and then proceed to attack with the ranged weapon. RNGs strength is basically in their WS and the weapons that are RNG exclusive. Otherwise most of our other strengths any job can get with it Subbed. Only ability we got that is exclusive to us is basically Unlimited Arrow (Woopie, we get 1 freebie arrow shot without the arrow being used up).
On top of that the melee weapon choices we got are not that great to be using to attack with. Best melee weapons for a RNG are ones with the bonus effects, more rng. acc. or something.
EDIT:
Woo, work and immediate task delay me long enough that two other's posted before I could. :worry:
you're slippin macht. not as quick on the draw as you used to be!

Lol, yeah right in the middle of that one work wanted me to put up like 20 images to our site (well 2 images but link them in 20 different areas). So it delayed me long enough. ^^;

Thanks for the replys. ^^ I'll have a go at it and see how RNG plays out.

unfortunately, they are available to you once you ding lv 55
damage wise, practically, flaming arrow/hot shot has better WS damage than piercing arrow/split shot :(
