View Full Version : Tele-port Service Fees

Hello everyone!
I just wanted to pop in and vent about something. How can some people (even higher levels that been around) expect a WHM to do a teleport for 1000gil? Half the time I do it for free anyways, but it is the point. A few nights ago in Aht. Whitgate there was an influx of people that had been shouting for teleport for at least 20 minutes. So I changed from COR to WHM and started /sh my Teleservice to help people get to where they need to go. I offered the same rates I see everyone else offer 3000 DEM/HOLLA/MEA, 5k for others. Then in /sh Liltifa said you better su** and fu** me for those prices, which in retrun started a /sh bashing on Watty. Why would a seasoned player do such a stupid thing? I do not ever get worked up over little thing and immature crap that other people do, but this pushed a button with me:evil:. When asked what they thought was a fair rate they all said 1,000gil!!! When I get a teleport I ALWAYS pay 3to7k even if the teleporter only asked for 2k, because thier time is valuable too. There are other things a WHM can do and make a lot more gil per hour then doing a teleport service. Please if you do not like what someone is offering just shut your mouth, and walk away. Sounds simple to me:wtf:
That is my vent of the month! lol

People in Al Zhabi especially have little room to complain about Tele prices, when they can so easily get to Jeuno and then grab a choco to get anywhere they need to.
Expecting a free port, or one for a pittance is just lazy and cheap.

I understand how you feel. People want me to actually charge 500 Gil for a teleport. I've seen people offer as high as 12 million (Yes. You heard me correctly. 12 million. Icebreaker, the guy who I dislike on Ramuh, offered 12 million for a tele).
People shell out 3-15k just for a tele in Whitegate, yet they try to weed the smallest price out of you.
Again, why do we WHM raise our prices on occasion? To keep up with the crazy prices Gilsellers/ crafters charge for spells/ items.

I don't even leave my moghouse for less than 3k.

He should be happy he was getting charged 3k. My ls leader hopped on his whm the other day when the Astral Candysense (yes I know thats not how you spell it) was gone. He was charging 50k for Tele-Vahzl's and people were paying! In about an hour he made 300k! Soooooo 3k and 5k are chump change!
On the flip side, I was doing teles the other night for 3k and a person I know that is a high lvl character and has scads of gil, berated me for charging 3k. He went on a rant of free for a while and when people started tell him he was full of it then he said 500 gil should be enough. Needless to say I won't be teleporting him....ever. When tele's were 500 gil and I was doing ports, I had a very prolific botter on our server who has all +1 or +2 gear and is loaded to the nines, not want to pay! 500 gil!! 500!!! I am NOT your tele-wh**e!!

I never advertise prices. People shout for teleports when they need them anyway. It's not like shouting that you're teleporting is going to make someone suddenly realize they need a teleport. And if it does make them realize that, they're probably the kind who makes you wait ten minutes while they "just get one thing from the AH real quick."
I pick up whoever I see shout first, and accept the price they offer. If they didn't list a price, I take whatever they give me. Usually it's 2 or 3k. Sometimes it's 1k. Last week I had someone give me an iron ore, a zinc ore, and a copper ore.
Maybe things are different in Al Zahbi, but I find I make more in Lower Jeuno that way than I do waiting around for higher prices. Plus I end up with a few people who "tip" more than they shouted because they remember me from the last few times.

That was pretty much how I did things when I was a WHM. Although most of the time I would just smile and refuse any payment. I had crafts and other ways of bringing in income, so teleportation was really just something I did when bored or if I were on the way somewhere already.
That said, I still think your method is the best way to make money via teleportation, since you don't annoy anyone with Tele-Spam. Besides (as you said), most people who want a tele are already shouting.

I'm getting there with alchemy. Teleporting isn't the best way to make money. I do it because it's completely mindless. No investment, no commitment, no pressure, and it keeps me free and easy-access for LS stuff.

That's why I said "the best way to make money via teleportation." There are definitely better/easier ways to make gil, but hey! Sometimes not having to think about what you're doing beyond firing off a tele followed by warp is pretty nice.

HOLY SHIT. You charged 50k for a tele and people paid you?! I want in on your server because I'd finally be able to make more than 50k/ hour via teles. Heck, 50k/minute is something that'd drive me to that server. Then I'd be spamming free pick up Dynamises just for kicks. =D

Reread please, "My ls leader hopped on his whm..." I personally could NEVER do that.

Whoops.
*delevels* T_T
The way I see it.....take it or leave it. Let's say I offer 1k for a tele in Jeuno. 90% of the time, a low-level whm will send me an invite and I'll be on my merry way. If I do not receive a response, I'll raise the price to 3k, and if still nobody responds, I'll raise it to 5k max.
The way I see it, it's a game of supply and demand. If there are enough whm's(the demand) out there who are free to tele and make a quick buck, then the supply is me, who is searching for a teleport for 1k gil. However, if there aren't that many low-level whms and I'm somewhere like Aht Urghan, I will offer 5k off the bat, because I know high-levels have better stuff to do with their time. As for Jeuno, it's always fair game if I offer 1k.
So yeah....I can see where you're coming from, but if there are many lower-level whms who are willing to accept 1k as a reward for teleporting because they need a quick way to make cash, I really can't see it as a way of cheating them out of money if you give them at least some money.

or just shout so many times, that a jp mage comes up and just gives you free

I have never seen this strategy work. The only thing this gets you is blacklisted by everyone in Lower Jeuno.
1k used to be the standard before ToA. With ToA everyone are offering at least 3k now. And on off hours can be up to 20k.
Just my personal feeling. Offering teleports for 3-5k doesn't sound too bad. 10k is a bit stretching tho.

Personally, I would much rather just walk than pay that much (10-30k). Unless my entire LS is waiting for me to do something, and I need to be there right then, I just can't justify that price.
And besides, in that instance, one of my LS members would come and grab me anyway.

I don't charge for teleports and I never will. If you see me around and you need a teleport, just ask.
Some complain that it's a "viable source of income for lower level whms" but honestly if you have to do a /sea all mist and ask me to teleport you, then those lower level whms apparently aren't all that interested in your business.

I don't think that's so much a complaint as it is a statement of fact.

Yeah, it's pretty much a no-brainer that if you can't find a for-pay teleport, then the WHMs in the area aren't really interested in making gil that way.
I can't remember how many times I'd be in Lower Jeuno for some other reason, and I'd do a pity job swap just to clear out all the shouts for various tele's. (Generally so that more people would be able to see that I needed help with a Genkei or AF Coffer Key :p)

I don't mean to imply that I will over shout whms trying to make gil...the only time I'd do that is if they're charging 10k a teleport and their name follows the pattern of well known gil farmers AND I'm very very bored. hehe.
However, if someone shoots me a /tell and says, "Mist can I get a tele?" or if someone keeps shouting over and over and over again for a teleport and no one is advertising them, then of course I'd take them and no, still won't charge.
I did use teleporting back in the day to make a living, but then prices weren't so messed up and you could actually make a living teleporting! Remember when people used to level up whm just to make money teleporting??

I do make a living teleporting. I do a little crafting on the side, but nothing big (I get about 30k every other day from it). I think the splitting of high-level homepoints between Lower Jeuno and Whitegate has done more to hurt it as an income source than price fluctuations have. (Maybe I should just move to Whitegate.)
I get what you're saying, and yeah, if there's nobody around willing to cash in on all the shouters, that's their loss. WHM busy doing something else picking up the odd 10k+ shout here and there? Okay. But if you're trying to teleport for a living, advertising your prices or waiting around for your minimum price are both just shooting yourself in the foot. It's bad business if nothing else.

When I hit level 74 I did some tele-taxing for a bit, I just picked up the jeuno shouts, thought it was cool.
I stopped doing it when someone wouldnt pay me until after the teleport, so I teleported him, he told me I was a loser and wasnt going to pay me, so I warp IIed him back :P
If I could only see his face.
Anyways, from what I gather, the going rates start at 5K on avarage now, whitegate I have seen them as high as 40K to a mea.

I get about one person a night who doesn't end up paying when I thought they would (as opposed to picking up someone for an intentional free ride). Usually I can't tell if they're just lagging really bad, or are waiting for me to give up, or don't know how to target ("move off the crystal, I can't target you" ), or are actually trying to ditch payment. I just say {See you again!} and warp, because it isn't worth my time hanging around to find out. If they actually insulted me or something, yeah, immediate blacklist.
But now I have an etiquette question for you other teleporters. Is it poor form for me to open the trade window after I start casting? Usually my process is: invite someone, find and target them, wait til they're in range, start casting, and hover my itchy trigger finger over "Trade." If it doesn't happen before we go, step off the crystal a little bit ( ), and wait for trade for a little bit. But I know a lot of people just don't know how to get the trade window open that fast (e.g. don't know how to target party members), so I've always wondered if I should just start the trade myself. I know some people do prefer to pay after the teleport, and I wouldn't want to seem rude to possible return customers.

I don't cast till they pay, simple as that. If I have other members in the pt, I will say in pt chat "We'll get going as soon as <insert deadbeats name here> pays." This motivates the other players to egg him on to pay. I've had people refuse to pay and drop, I've had people complain to the high heavens, but I've never had one single person not pay.

Well I had this last night, I'm new to the tele taxi thing, only got lev 36 a few nights ago. So this Blu16/Blm6 is shouting for a port, no auto-trans just a long shout in english with no punctuation. I invite, and wait, he asks if we can get going so I cast. We arrive and I get this "thank-you sooooooo much", and he proceeds to run away. I almost quit taxi-ing. What I don't get is he's obviusly got 1 job at 30, so he should have a clue, and why be a jerk about it. If you don't want to pay why state that you will in your shout? I give out free tele's, and if a player has no cash and asks for one I'll do it, so why be a jerk? And, I've always paid for my teles.
/em rant off
I'm starting to think that I will initiate a trade if the player doesn't before hitting the old tele-macro.
Liltifa's a ****** nub. Don't worry about it. I personally couldn't give two ****s and a giggle over that idiot. All that player ever does is beg and cyb0r for attention anyway. No skills and no life. Just /blist add Liltifa next time.

I used to make a decent living out of Jeuno for 500gil a tele a few years ago, Im sure that at whitegate there will be better offers, but I still t/p for 500gil now.
If people offer or pay more - fine, but Im not going to get silly needlessly charging anywhere near 3-50k a pop.
Yes, it is a time saver, and WHMs are contributing their time, but I just cant justify requesting more than 1k with a straight face for a few minutes of my time.
Perhaps Im just the last of a dying breed, but like I said, depending on what the offers are, Ill kindly take them ;)

It depends really. You know, the way I pay porters is dependant on how quickly they get their **** together. I pay their base rate (Which is what Watty outlined) and then tack on my appreciation. So, you dig your nose and wait for some friend to come by to get a free port while I'm doing my /peepeedance because my LS claimed LoO and they need a stunner ... you get 0 tips from me (maybe get a /blist add) But you invite me and start up that port the moment I'm in casting range, you get double your going rate, even triple.
That's how life is.

outpost warp to Vahzl then to your destination:
1600 gil + 800 gil (barring ownership..)
That almost makes 2k per tele a waste. 3k Should be the minimum. 5k if you consider the "time invested..."

See my post above....
How can you justify 500g? I know that used to be a standard, but Vermillion Cloak used to cost 500k >.>

As a WHM main, you should be going for Noble's, the cheaper alternative. But that's just me :P
