View Full Version : All about monks!
Well i've been searching around this website and only getting info that tells me monk has high hp. Well duh I know that! Can people who play as/with monks or read things about them please post with info. If using monk as a sub what would a good main be? What would a good sub be for a monk? Are they good at high levels/low levels? Are they neglected for PT? What weapons can they use besides claws? I read that monk is sort of useless because it is sort of like RDM. It's not great with def or great with attack. Its sort of mid and is obsolete when PALs and WARs or DRKs, THFs, or BLMs are around. Is this true? Also feel free to post anything else on monks.

I'll try to answer some ^_^;;
When useing Monk for a sub job.. I think Warrior and thief would make a good choice becuase it would give them some good monk skills and more HP ^_^;;
As for them good at high levels.. I dont know.. but i think they would be good at high levels ^_^;;
I dont think they are Neglected for PT's ^_^;;
I think they can uses 2handed staff.. not sure...
I think monk is needed like any other Melee class.. thats what i think... ^_^;;
Hope this helps some...
Thanks a lot! I guess no one else has any info to share with a knowledge hungry future monk?:sweat:

Well me wouldn't quite decide just yet. U still have to consider the 4 new jobs that are going to be added when the expansion comes out. If you want a monk...I would go with a ninja or a samurai. Only because of the speed that ninjas have. So then you can hit hard and dodge things, and it might also up your attack speed.

Mnk/war has better str and hp status. Mnk/Thief and Mnk/war have almost the same agi at lv 50. Trust me Mnk/War is better. The thing that is good about Mnk/Thief is that they have better dex.

A word to the wise, never sub melee characters with a mage. Unless it is a red mage. Try to say away from mages regarldess if your main job is melee. If you want a mage then make a mage. Don't sub a melee fighter with a mage because it lowers their str, and vit. These are things you don't want. And tarutaru already is gimp in the vit department and by subing mage that just makes it worst.

Ughh sorry about that...but yeah you should stay away from mages. If you want to do Monk/Red Mage its okay. It only lowers your str down a little. Vit stay the same...

I always say sub what ya want you dont have to be a boring cookie cutter class like every one else and if a party doesnt accept you they are lame thats all there is too it. ;)

In my experience the best main job to have a MNK sub is WAR or THF; because THF's shouldn't taunt. The WAR could use the added DEX and the added HP. If MNK is your main job WAR should be subbed for taunt, but THF is ok also. MNK's do tend to get left out of PT's if WAR's and such are available :sweat:

I'm always a little skeptical when there's a MNK/WAR in the party. Everytime it taunts, the monsters start doing major damage to it and it drains away all the WHM's MP since there's a lot of HP to cure while the monk is getting pounded on. It's usually better if a PLD or WAR taunts and takes damage since that way WHMs can conserve MP a little better that way, thus saving time after battle since there's less healing.
Monks are really good for renkeis, however. Their grapple weapon skills do tremendous amounts of damage when compared with the other job's weapon skills. The only problem is that a thief can easily replace a monk later on because a THF/MNK can use grapples just was well as your generic monk off the street, and they get deadly abilities such as backstab and sneak attack which out-does any melee's job ability in the attacking department.
But monks have one redeeming factor - its two hour ability Hundred Fists. Hundred Fist literally turns the monk into a raging nine-year-old with Attention Deficit Disorder by allowing it to attack without any delay whatsoever. If your party ever gets aggroed while the mages are still healing MP (i.e. the WHM can't heal) the only thing that can get you out of that mess is the monk, since Hundred Fist can do a couple thousand points worth of damage in a really short amount of time. After that monster that aggroed you is dead, you'll be glad that you had the monk in your party instead of that thief or warrior.

Well I noticed that a monk/warrior has more VIT and HP to back it up than a warrior/monk. Also a monk/warrior has higher HP and equal VIT than a Paladin/Warrior. What makes them so bad at taunting then?

Though a monk has higher VIT the warriors and paladins get much better armor that monks can't wear, so they end up with higher defense even though monks have higher VIT.
