What is the general range for a spell (distance from the target)?
i see alot of vids where the mages are reletaveily close to the monsters about the same distance as a melee class is that is why i am wondering.....
also if they can stay out of the monsters attack range and fight it is there some penealty or something i am not aware about or something?
thanks in advance:)

Well, the spell range is actually quite big. There are many reason why people stay near the monster they are attacking.
1. The mages are trying to lv there weapon skill
2. The area they are fighting might be too dangerous if standing farapart from the PT member(i.e. the possiblility of spawned monster that will link)
3. Hmm, there are more, but my brain can only think of 2 reason just now.

Doesn't magic do more damage when your up close instead of far away? Or is the damage the same?

Well, sometimes the mages need to get up close in order to cast certain spells like Protea and Shellra. The melee members are most likely fighting right next to the monster, and the mages are a good distance away so they don't get attacked, but sometimes they have to run up to the members where the monster is so they can cast stuff on the members.
Edit:
Oh, and to clarify, yes, the mages could stand way back and still cast Protea/Shellra on the party, but it's just safer to cast it at closer range so they you'll be 100% sure that you're within range and therefore everyone gets protected.
