I used to play a long time ago, and recently came back after getting the game for PS2.
I used to love being able to cast, get up off my chair, do some jumping jacks, run around the house, go to the store, then come back and see if my character randomly got a fish or not. Now I can't even answer the phone, even if the answering machine is all like "Oh no help I'm on fire this is your friend I'm on fire I need you to call 911!", I gotta be all like "Can't dude, sorry, I'm trying to break my fishing rod."...
You guys know what I mean?

Yea, I seriously lost like 3 or 4 sabiki rigs starting off cause I didn't even understand it, the one before was easier, but I think this one gets you more fish.
I'm totally in love with the new fishing system.
The old one was nothing more than a simple buttom pressing. It was easy, yes. But it wasn't something that should require human to do. Fishing today is a lot more fun. There's more interaction and some skill involved.

Yea I guess theres more action, harder to talk to LS while your fishing, But what skill does it involve? you push the button opposite of the direction your character is tugging =P
Try catch a blacksole, emperor fish, ryugu titan or lik.
ironicly, you can also try little goldfish. In Al Zahbi's moat with insect paste.

I suddenly want to take up fishing.
Even if it is simplistic like Harvest Moon: Back to Nature's version of fishing, thats certainly a change from the usual, "Push a button... You succeed!... Gain a level..." type crafting.

Yeah but unless I'm doing it for no reason, you gotta push "up" when you aren't going in any direction so the fish doesn't regen HP (or whatever that meter is for)...
Well you try doing that with a PS2 controller. Or at least mine. Or any PS2 controller, but with my thumb. I don't know, after sitting there for so long and laying upside down (I end up there eventually), it's kind of hard to do.
I guess.
I'd much rather have the no-skill way, and save my skill for killing monsters.
I mean I can't even cast my fish until I finish this, because then I'd have to grab my controller mid-post and then when I get back I'll forget what I was talking about and start talking about something totally not related to FFXI thinking I'm on another message board.
So did you guys hear about what happened--- oh see I did it.
I'm in so much pain, I hate my life.

I love the new fishing system. Back in 2003-2004ish when I was first playing, I tried my hand at fishing a few times and seriously thought about ending it all. Sure, I got a lot of reading and TV watching in, but I didn't really feel like I was playing.
Now I love fishing. I can still read while I do it, and I feel much more involved with my fishing efforts. It's gewd.^^
you don't have to press anything in the neutral position.

Boy am I glad to hear that. Thank for making it a little less annoying.
And Aelathir, the thing is I'm not trying to fish/read. I'm trying to fish/play another game on my laptop.
XD
if you're trying to multi tasking I can see how the current fishing is more... um.. challenging I guess ^^;
I did some fishing on 2 accounts at the same time a while ago. Easy fish like moat carps I had no problem. Anything harder than that it got too much for me.

Oh man I got an idea for a contest:
Person who can fish with the most characters, using the following:
PS2 controller
Xbox 360 controller
Keyboard
Guitar Hero guitar controller
Real fishing rod

Man, I don't even own a Guitar Hero controller. :worry:
Enough off-topicness from me though.
I think both ways had their good and bad points to them.
With the old way, I could do a quick tidy up after my youngest hurricane tore through the room while I caught a fish, grab a drink, take a potty break, whatever. The downside was guessing if you had a fish or an item.
With the new way, I enjoy the fact it is a more interactive type of fishing. With a number of fish, you have to be quick with the controller or keyboard to reel in the fish. On the downside, I lost 3 PS2 controllers to the new fishing system in catching the more active fish. If you're using a PS2 controller for fishing, I highly suggest switching to the keyboard for fishing. I had one L3 button fall right off... er... snap off, one just stopped working all together and the third screwed up how I would run.
a dance pad fishing would be fun. especially for Ryugu Titan...

Well, I don't know what to say.
Either you got bad controllers of you're incredibly strong.
Remind me not to get on your bad side.
Double Post Edited:

Now THAT is what I call thinking.
+rep for great idea

Hmm... what are the keyboard controlls for a ps2, i've tried the arrow keys but they don't do anything. Do I have to unplug my ps2 controller for them to initialize or are they different keys?

I'm pretty sure it's the number pad, but I always just use the controller.
Don't forget about the manual though :D
Also you can re-map the keys under config.
you can set it to compaq mode. with compaq mode it gives you movement control with asdw in addition to the num pad controls. And you can fish with a/d

If you're breaking controllers, you may just be getting a tad too enthusiastic ... although fishing uses the analog part of the controller, it is NOT actually analog ... you will get just as good of results gently pulling a small amount to the side vs hardcore smashing the direction.

But smashing is more fun!

My husband and I both do fishing in the game. After the third one busted from both of us being "a tad too enthusiastic", I've been naggingly reminding him to use the keyboard to fish. He's more enthusiastic with our poor controllers then I am.
Now if only I can convince the NMs in the game to stop flocking to him everytime he logs on.

Perhaps he could wield an old Xbox controller, those weigh about 40lbs and might not break as easily.
As easily as a PS2 controller, or keyboard.
I mean of all my years of playing PS2, I've never broken a controller.
If I could draw I'd make a comic about this.
And this is the closer.
It's true though. Every time he plays, he runs into 2-3 NMs minimum while he's farming. It's like they know when it's him playing and not me using his character for farming since I'm lucky if I get to actually see one every 6 months, and rarely get to fight them.
But back on the topic of fishing... My goal of 10 000 moat carps for my Lu Shang's has inched a little closer now. 606/10k. At the rate I'm fishing up carps, I'll have it by next year sometime... I hope.

I like the new fishing system, but I hate the carpal tunnel syndrome I feel coming on because of it.
Pressing and holding is ok, but for those fighting fish where you have to tap like a madman, it's nuts to fish for hours at a time.
Good thing I don't have a controller though...I could definitely break me some hardware when "Your rod breaks. Whatever you were trying to catch was too big for this pole."

Hehe, yeah, I'm surprised even Lu can stand up to some of those .. and no surprise it breaks on Ryugu, which is usually about 2x as big as Titanictus.
