This is more economy related, but I didn't quite know where else to put it.
So I'm browsing the Jueno AH today and I noticed somthing interesting.
Distilled Water = 2,000gil with the sales history full from today.
Windy Tea Leaves = 2,000gil again, sales history full from today.
Now, I understand why Windy Tea Leaves are there. But distilled water? You can buy a stack of distilled water a few feet away for ~168gil. This lead me to have a depressing thought.
Lets say the average price of Distilled Water in the AH is 1,000... over Vana'Diel's lifetime.
I've played for 2.5 years... but lets imagine I've only had the time for 2 out of those years.
If I was to log on and sell 7 stacks a daya of distilled water, for an average of 832 profit per stack... 5824gil/day... 2125760gil total. That blew my mind. And thats when the price isn't at 2k. Two million might not be that much now, but jeez, it ain't exactly pocket change for me.
Not that any of this is feasible, and you'd probably flood the market instantly. Darn those Distilled Water undercutters.
Just a fun little thought on a Friday. Have a good day.

one thing you have to understand is that, both ingame and in the real world, the best money comes from lazy/dumb people who are willing to pay without question

It makes the world go round. I've realized that from the begining... its just funny to see how it could have added up. If I was smart I'd start doing it now... but I'm too lazy myself. :)

I tried that for a while myself. I had my Jeuno mule camped in Upper Jeuno near the chocobo stables. I'd grab seven stacks of darts from the chocobo merchant for 891g/stack, walk two feet and set them on auction for 5k/stack. 4109/stack profit. If I did it for any longer than a week, I'd have made a killing.
Alas, my ADD kicked in.

I used to fill up any empty AH slots on all my mules with Leather Armor or Faerie Apples or what-have-you like that whenever I didn't have enough "real" stuff to sell. But every time I get a run of not having empty AH slots, I forget to go back to it once they clear.
It's not just crafting materials. There's good money to be made by finding a way to park a mule at Norg. Not sure if this works effectively anymore since ToAU came out. Then again, never underestimate convenience.

I personally have never had much money, I think the most i've ever had on me at one point is like 600k. But, even for me, spending the extra time to save a few hundred, or even a few thousand gil is not worth the time wasted to do it. Every time I log into this game I have to choose among the 8,000 different things that I COULD do, so I don't want to waste half of my available time running around the city, or waiting for a stupid airship just so I can save a bit of gil. Yes, I know this is a big factor in why I never have a lot of gil, but you know what, I'm actually enjoying what I'm doing when I'm logged in.
Travel is just way too time consuming in this game, so I avoid it all costs. Too make a long story short, I'm lazy.

So true, yes I will try to buy items at NPC but if iI have to mule, buyt the things, send it, logg back, go to MH, and takes it. It will be way faster for me to buy it at AH, 2 raws items, synth them and still make a better profit in less time.
On th other side, I remember when I was starting this game and doing such things to get money and thus I feel like helping the new smart players a bit.

I sometimes do the opposite. I buy things off AH and sell them to npc for profit.
Oh, that's nothing. Recently, I decided i'd try insect paste for some gil.
Ok, so I buy a 3G worm, 11G water, 100G crystal, and 40G corn.
Or, all in all, aprx. 154G. Let's say 160, just to have a nice round number.
Now, i've made over 80 synths now, let's say 100. That's 16k i've spent on ingrediants.
Put them on AH, in jeuno, they're 2k each. In San d'Oria, 1.5k.
Let's say I put them up for 1k, to sell them faster.
That's 100k, assuming I cut prices considerably. 200k if I put them all on Jeuno and wait. 200k for a few hours of muling and synthing, and 16k in start costs.

Some peoples do 200k in a few minutes.
Of course it's a nice start and if you do such things you are more likely to become one of these guys who can do 200k in a few min.
Time = money, for everyone. The only thing that change from people to people is the amount of money they can create in a given time.
