You want a chocobo with the "Tripod" logo on it?

odd...

-.- hold on. forgot tripod is retarded like that.

Whats wrong with my Robot Chocobo?

It'd rip right through that armor...

*pfft* kids these days...

Also, you could make your own armored bird by just recoloring the Texture. It's an easy to do Mod, even for beginners. Plenty of help on the forums for starting out.

Gokage
05-03-2006, 03:53 PM
-.- point is, a recolor is different from actually modding it. I'm lookin for someone who wants a challenge.

Ive actually been itching to do this for a long time,but I got discouraged after the fabled 'Mog Knight' incident. It looked good in modelviewer, but ingame the coloring was all screwed up. I wish I still had pics ( I still have the file, though, incase anyone actually wants it, lol) so as of right now, I dunno how to do PC -> NPC convertions, although NPC -> PC ones I can do just fine <_<;

Shep

tried it and then my pc blew up - lol.....

eventually.....after the 13 mod projects i have ahead of me....

Decided to give it a try, I've always been intruiged by the though of having an armored chocobo. Still working on it, but I decided to post what I've got so far. Its coming along quite nicely. Even the animations are all working properly :).

Haven't put eye holes in the visor yet, obviously. I'll do that next. After that I'll add a little leg armor or something. Lastly, I'll skin it. Heres what I've got so far:

Heres how the skinning is coming. Anyone have some thoughts?

Only thing that I'm not sure if I like or not is that the head armor is darker than the body armor. Opinions?

oo looks pretty hot so far :D The contrast isn't matching the rest of the bird yet but it's looking good.

Thats pretty nice, like Jei said though, there's a contrast between the choco and the armor, maybe you could make the texture look a tad less thick, and make it look more like a light platting? Try lowering the gloss, to make it look like a roughed metal, and maybe a tad less dark, more like hmmm... think of the eisen set, but without the glossyness.

>.> Just my personnal thought, take or leave it :p

Very nice work. But the head and the body pieces should match each other more.

dabadking
05-04-2006, 09:06 AM
maybe could look similar to one of these? I like how the chocobo only has the armor on his upper part of the face ..it doesnt cover the beak (sorry for the horrible pics but i just googled the FFXII chocobos). not sure what the more colorfull choco pic s from

do you have a clearer image of the left one? looks cool. wanna see it more clearly :)

Korith
05-04-2006, 11:43 AM
Its a little washed out, but this is one of the images I look at when deciding how I was going to do this. Its not the same scene, but its quite similar. (dabadking - the colorful image you put up is from FFX).
Link since its rather large. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v507/Korith2/DAT%20Pictures/chocoboknights4ti.jpg)

Update on Progress:
The production of this has come to a screeching hault. Was getting near completion and decided to see how it acutally behaved in FFXI. Well, it didn't work. The image on the armor is all screwed up:vent:. I'm seeing if there is anything I can do to remedy this, but its not looking hopeful.

~~~~~
Success!
HAHAHA! After spending close to an hour working on this I finally had success in getting the image to display correctly. Unfortunately, the Alpha layers aren't doing their job when viewed ingame, but its better than the helmet being chocobo colored. Yay! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v507/Korith2/DAT%20Pictures/chocowip4.jpg)
dabadking
05-04-2006, 12:16 PM
how is the image messed up? maybe if you had a pic, someone may know how to fix it. I'm assuming the skeleton didnt match up?..or is it just the textures itself?
Korith
05-04-2006, 12:23 PM
I've seen people run into this issue numerous times, and nobody has ever been able to help them. But since you wanted a picture of it:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v507/Korith2/messedchoco.jpg
(and like I said in my last post, I've fixed this. Now just the alpha mapping is broken)
dabadking
05-04-2006, 01:06 PM
sweet! glad you fixed that issue..... if you cant get the alpha mapping to work, you can always make the armor go just above the eye instead of around it.... just an idea because I want to see this released, and not just get scrapped because the alphas wont work....also I'm not too familiar with VRS (just starting to learn finally) but maybe instead of alpha(if you cant egt them to work) maybe cut out eye holes using VRS or something similar to that method?
PotentPotables
05-04-2006, 01:10 PM
Most likely the reason it's not converting the Alpha properly is because the Armor texture you imported over has a reflective material attached to it. Reflective Materials don't Alpha, like shields and stuff.
If you're familiar with VRS, you can attach a new Non-reflective Material to the Model and delete the old one. this should fix ur problem.
Korith
05-04-2006, 01:13 PM
No need to fear, I intend to finish this. Even better, I figured out why the alpha mapping doesn't work. I made the armor shiney, so it reflects in the light. Unfortunately, shiney things in this game cannot have any alpha mapping. So, either I remove its reflective nauture to allow alpha mapping or I manually go in and edit ever little spot.
Edit: Just as PotentPotables posted as I was typing this =P
I have a feeling I'll just remove the shineyness. Making the eye hole in the head, along with the fancy designs on the edges would require adding alot of vertices. It would also take forever. Also, I doubt anyone would really care that much if it isn't very reflective.
~~~~~

I went in and removed the material to allow the alpha layers to work. I also tried to get the shades on the armor to be the same. Tell me what you think, if nobody has anything else to say about it I'll release it later today.

In game:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v507/Korith2/DAT%20Pictures/chocowip7.jpg
The lighting is kinda weird on the body armor, I have no idea how to remedy that.

(And maybe, if we're really lucky, someone like Amadaun will come fix up my shitty skinning job. I tried, I really did, I just suck at skinning.)

dabadking
05-04-2006, 02:55 PM
heheh, I was planning on doing a bit of skinning on it as well just to see how it would look, so yeah no worries on the skin much ^^ it looks good, I like it!

05-04-2006, 06:41 PM
Great job, really. But why are you finished already? Leg armor.. come on! We wanna see more. ^^ I'm also sure you can edit it so that the handle where the character holds itself on to, can be changed to a sort of chain attached to the headgear. I'd really like to see you, or someone else skilled to progress this further.

Korith
05-04-2006, 06:45 PM
I considered adding the reigns, but I'm not sure how possible it would be to do that, without it looking horrible with some animations. As for leg armor... hmm... mostly forgot about, and kinda ran outa steam. I'll see if I can find some time to get leg armor done tonight.

PotentPotables
05-04-2006, 06:50 PM
....without it looking horrible with some animations....

That's why you edit the Skeletal Weights. Focus on matching the reign weights to the Neck weights, starting at the head and working down to not much further than the middle of the neck.

Neomage
05-04-2006, 06:57 PM
Looks awsome, the only think I don't really like is the contrast of the saddle and the Armor... mabye if someone could reskin the saddle to make it match?

I'd do it myself but I suck at these things >.>

Korith
05-04-2006, 08:20 PM
I know about matching skeletal weights, I just don't think I'll be able to get it to be smooth with all of them. I don't expect it to be very hard to make it look smooth when walking/running, but making it also look normal while digging and dismounting would be a little trickier.

I'm going to leave the one I've distributed there. But I'm going to keep working on it, call it a beta or something. Currently, I'm adding armor onto the legs. After that I might go back and add a little more onto the chest plate, possibly add reigns as opposed to a handle, and lastly I'll consider changing the seat to match the rest a little more.

Nothing special, I Just threw together 2 reskins of the war chocobo. I'll make better ones later. I made one silver, and one gold....ish lol ... wasnt sure about the gold one from the begining because of the yellow and gold similarity but...figured meh, why not? Anyways heres the pics, let me know what you think. dats posted as well since the actual models werent made by me to begin with...I just reskinned them.

I think the nice thing about grey armor is that it matches the seat on top of the bird ^^

Leg armor more of less complete here. What do you think?
...Probly needs to be darkened a bit.

dabadking
05-05-2006, 09:02 AM
looks good to me ^^ ...yeah it does look light...also the texture doesnt really match the other armors style but its all good, nothing a bit of reskinning wont fix anyways lol ...also.... I figured id mention this.. although I'd have to see it in MV myself and look at different angles... side view mainly.. it looks very think to be leg armor, I think maybe a scale armor type may look lighter? not sure, its up to you. I just thought maybe give it a texture that looks.... light, sturdy, yet flexible.

Korith
05-05-2006, 10:01 AM
Did some work on adding reigns. They came out better than I expected. And the skeletal weight balancing was muuuch easier than I had anticipated. The skinning on them isn't final by any means. Feel free to leave some suggestions as to what they should look like.

The ingame pictures are rather dark and hard to see, heres a shot in the model viewer:

Wow, that's a really cool chocobo @.@

Please release the .dat for the one with the reigns and the leg armor :3

Korith

Allright. I've reskinned the saddle and darkened the leg armor. I think for the most part it looks pretty good. I wont be back until later tonight, but leave feedback/suggestions on it. I'll read them over when I get back, possibly make some more changes, and then most likely release this version.

Kenichii
05-05-2006, 12:36 PM
It's looking really good =) I like the reigns and leg armor a lot, it adds a lot to the armor look. =D

Korith
05-05-2006, 06:13 PM
Until I think of something else to add to this, its complete. If anyone else has some suggestions, post them and I'll consider adding them.

Also, feel free to reskin this. I don't particularly like some of the skinning I did and would like to see someone whos really good at it give this a makeover. If you do reskin it, please post it here for the rest of us to enjoy :D

(There have been no major changes since my last post, so the image in that one is still accurate.)

One thing I've noticed recently after switching to this DAT.... Chocobo footprints (EG in Valkurm or Altepa) leave a solid black square rather than the typical claw print. Is this something related to the .DAT or am I just having some odd graphical glitch pop up?

Shep
05-12-2006, 06:55 PM
it has something to do with the .dat file, not just this one, but any choco-mod out there. i noticed it with the black/red choco, and i also saw someone else having problems in another thread.....

PotentPotables
05-12-2006, 07:34 PM
It's because there is actually a Texture file that is for the Footprints.

Most, as do I, Modders completely overlook it cuz its not too important.

It's a small .BMP that export from Model Viewer and is usually either manually deleted in VRS or completely combined with the Model, since it deals more with the Motion files rather than the actual Model files.

Korith
05-14-2006, 01:27 PM
I never deleted it. VRS automatically drops any image that isn't attached to a model. The file for the foot isn't attached to the model anywhere. As a result, on my first export it got dropped.

PotentPotables
05-15-2006, 05:08 AM
blah blah blah... or completely combined with the Model, since it deals more with the Motion files rather than the actual Model files.

I never laid blame on you...

Korith
05-15-2006, 09:52 AM
Didn't mean to imply you did, just explained why it went away in this case.

Although, after rereading it, it did kinda come off that way, sorry ^^;

Hi Korith... I just wanted to say that this is one of the best mods out there... it fits very well with the overall motif of the game, especially since there are actual armored chocobos in those screens posted earlier. And it looks great in-game too! Only one thing I would've liked changed is to make the armor a little darker, like it is in the model viewer. In-game, it seems there's a lot of specular on it that washes out the texture color. But, it's such a minor point that it doesn't at all take away from the bad-ass-ed-ness of the armored chocobo! Kudos!!

Korith
05-16-2006, 10:33 AM
Thanks for the compliment =D.

I definitely see your point about the shading. I'm not too sure what to do about that. Under some lighting conditions it looks correct ingame, while under others its too bright. If it is made darker, then it would be very dark at nighttime or when light isn't reflecting off it. Perhaps the best option would be to darken it a little so that it doesn't get too bright, but doesn't get too dark at night either. I'm not sure. If you'd like to take a shot at darkening it up a bit, that would be awsome. Maybe I'll try later after some school projects have been finished up and turned in if nobody else does.

PotentPotables
05-16-2006, 10:54 AM
Try adjusting the Material Properties if it's that big of a deal. It might be diffusing to much.

Korith
05-16-2006, 02:49 PM
The armor does not have a material on it. I didn't use one because it would have disabled Alpha layers. The lighting effect thats happening is just the natural process the game does to every object when its in sunlight; to brighten it up.

PotentPotables
05-16-2006, 03:12 PM
No, a "Reflective" Material would have disabled Alpha Maps.

A Material without a Reflective property does not overwrite Alpha Mapping.
