if anyone wants a screenshot program thats compleely free and doesnt mark up the screens(with logos and stuff), and also creates very good quality pics. go to....

www.fraps.com

Other great features it has is a frame rate display, which tells you the framerate the game is currently running at.
Also has record feature, which can record your game to make high quality(and very large file sizes, every minute of video roughly equates to a 200 MB video file) videos.

stolen right from the site:

" Fraps is a free utility for DirectX and OpenGL games. It can best be described as:
benchmarking software - see framerates on screen and log them to file. Calculate the average framerate between any two points.
screen capture software - take screenshots at the press of a button with files automatically named and timestamped.
movie maker software - realtime recording of your gameplay to high quality AVI video files"

there is several other small features... most i dont use, bu nice none the less.

if anyone knows of other great screenshot programs please post them here for others to check out.

ADDED NOTE!!!

screens are taken and saved as .bmp (bitmap)... and are usually quite large depending on resolution and amount of stuff onscreen. some of my FFXI screens were as large as 5 MB.

if you wish to convert them to a smaller file format, such as JPG. get this free program. Batch Thumbs
http://harmware.com/bThumbs.htm

is says on the site its a thumbnail maker... yes it does that... but it also converts lots of picture files to other formats.

I'm pretty sure you can also use Photoshop/Fireworks/and others to load up the .bmp images then save them as .jpg
It wouldnt have that annoying little marker thing on it then ^^;

Is all that really necessary?

You can just take a screenshot with PrtScr can you not? Then use Jasc Paint Shop Pro or GIMP to get the photo.

And if the game has it disabled, there is another program called Snagit that could do it for you. You can even make it take screenshots at intervals.

clixxer... there is a very in depth FAQ on fraps.com... its answers every question.

but i will answer it.

all screenshots and video captures are saved into the fraps folder.... wherever you may have installed it... i think the default install is C/fraps....

anyways... the hotkey to start recording is also the smae key that turns it off.... and the hotkeys can be changed to whatever you want it to be.

what version of windows media player do you have? if its not 9... then i suggest you go to Microsofts site and download Windows media player 9. it should come will all the codecs you need.

you can also go to DivX.com (if thats the adress) and get the divx bundle 5.0.2.... which has a few codecs that WMP may not have.

is the file that wont play the origenal? or did you modify/compress it?

on the fraps site FAQ is a recommended video editor.. i downloaded it and its amazing... it turned a 295 MB (yes MB) final fantasy XI .avi movie into a 3 MB file..... which retained almost all the quality of the origenal..... it shocked me to tell you the truth.

so download that and Divx.... compress the file into DivX format... and your set.

I believe there is a newer bundle out, but despite that, you might want to go look for a better software package as divx likes to encode a little logo in the corner...
